HARASSMENT OF ANTI-MARTINEZ CANDIDATES DOCUMENTED: BROWNSVILLE POLICE, CONTRACT ATTORNEY INVOLVED?

By Juan Montoya
Even before the early voting period for the May 11 election for three seats on the Brownsville City Commission started, police officers, City Manager Charlie Cabler and city health inspectors visited the campaign fundraiser of a candidate challenging the mayor's chosen slate.
At the time, it was Letty Perez Garzoria, who is challenging incumbent John Villarreal in District 4. Villarreal called Cabler and he arrived with five squad cars to investigate the brazen campaigning against one of the mayor's candidates.
(That's Villarreal's post on the Cheezmeh FB page complaining about some Port Isabel EMS medics stopping to get  a free plate of food from their brother Brownsville firefighters supporting Perez-Garzoria).
Things have escalated to the point that on the first day of early voting, police officers intervened to warn campaign workers for her, District 3 candidate Martin Sarkis and At-Large B candidate Roberto Uresti against stepping off the curb at the Central Library site.
The visits from the police escalated to the point where the workers were removed from the entrance to the Central Public Library – an unheard of event – and told to campaign from across the street. The officers said at first said they had been sent by the mayor, then contract city attorney Mark Sossi, and left a card with Sossi's name and an ordinance number they said he had cited to remove them.
Sossi immediately  denied any involvement.
However, some firefighters supporting Perez-Garzoria said that said that the officers confirmed that they had been sent by the attorney.
The frustrated opponents of the mayor's acknowledged ticket – Deborah Portillo, Villarreal, and Rose Gowen – finally had enough and engaged the services of local civil rights champion attorney John Shergold, of Hodge and Shergold, LLP, who immediately sought a public information request to City Secretary Estella Von Hatton on behalf of the Brownsville Firefighters Association.
In that request, Shergold demands the logs of the Brownsville PD regarding police calls made concerning "an incident between the BFA and/or nay other citizen located at/or near the Brownsville Public Library central location at approximately 2 p.m.
Shergold's request includes "a copy of any recordings made by BPD dispatch regarding any calls or
complaints against any firefighter or citizen located...near the library...at any time during May 7..."
He also calls for a "detailed listing of all phone calls made or received by Marki Sossi, City Attorney using city-issued cell phone or private cell phone used for public purpose from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m...May 7..."
Shergold's information request also calls for "any or all city ordinances or state/federal law that the BPD was sent to enforce as against the BFA or any citizen located at or near the...library..."
He also calls for all investigative notes, written reports, and documents of any kind from police officers involved in making contact with members of the BFA or any other citizen at the..library..."
He also calls for a copy of the card that was shown to firefighter Marco Longoria by the Brownsville PD officer with the following numbers 2007-1432-B that also contained the name of (Sossi).
Some city workers have also reported that their supervisors are urging them to vote for the mayor's slate.
"It used to be that they would just tell you to vote," said one. "Now they are telling you to vote for either Portillo. Villarreal or Gowen. Martinez must have a lot riding in this election."
A copy was made to Martinez, the mayor, several local broadcasters and the Brownsville Herald.

Scabler, the top law dog, hasn't any business checking the BFFA campaigning. Garcia can't touch this (campaign activity). Scabler wears many hats. One is silly manager. Between scabler and hissy fit peerez the demand of respect has eroded all respect for silly government. One hits a woman with a city stipended vehicle and the other picks up whores in harlingen in a official city vehicle. The latter served 1 day suspension and the former paid $10,000 hush bribe. With a silly manager and fire chef like that its no wonder there is no respect. Silly fools respect is earned.

If the citizens allow this abuse to continue, we might as well resort to being a third world country. This should never be tolerated at all cost!

Let me get this straight ... The cops endorsed John Villarreal, Rose Gowan, and Deb Portillo just after early voting ended and now they are being used to harass the opponents supporters? Does anybody see that there is something terribly wrong with this picture?

Why is Mark Sossi getting paid 10,000.00 a month for doing nothing?

Arrears Marco longoria under the influence?? Y luego Quien! Ha! Isn't he the one who got fired for refusing to take the drug test on duty! NOT A CREDITABLE person!!!!!!!

Excellent! Follow through with your so called investigation saggy ass Sherrgold and you'll find that all these claims are false and a lame attempt to smear PD, Sossi and several candidates. Proof wins arguments, not loud barks.

The citizens of Brownsville are numb from the neck up and will not take any action to fight off the autocratic policies and actions of the current city administration. Tony Martinez and his cronies have obviously been influenced by the autocratic management style of Juliet Garcia and the Kardenas Klan. They know the citizens will not react or take to the streets against Tony and his crew. Brownsville continues to shine....

The only thing wrong in THAT pict is that drunk crooked fireman BUC member talking to that cop! They should check inside his STRIPE cup.. give him a piss test, then again them firemen have a reputation of refusing to take those tests! Only to cost us city taxt payers money to get their jobs back! Worry bout those firemen,NOT the cops ..getting dispatched to annoying calls at the voting polls is a joke, not harassment .

Or to put their lives on the line for you or family sir. SHOW SOME RESPECT

These are all lies and bullshit fed to him by that fireman in that pict. These citizens know better. Cops don't get involved with this dirty politics crap.. Not like these drunk firemen that are only focused on ONLY one thing...ELIMINATING FIRE CHIEF LENNY PEREZ . They use their candidates and when they don't get what they want, they turn on you. Just look at their history...there's pictures to prove it! who's being USED?????

We already heard this one Commissioner Longoria. You are such a spineless leach you cannot even defend your own blood.

Sossi is worthless and has brought nothing to the table. We need to run Brownsville like a business. That what a city is. We have small minded idiots that accomplish nothing and are rewarded with second terms. If I performed by job like these cabrones I would be fired.

Ay porfavor lives on the line?!! you meant our tax money on their ot and beer tab. valen caca buc

Sossi ordered no one. The officer put his name on the card in case the recipient had a question on the ordinance.

Anonymous said...

Right on! I was referring to the cops putting their lives on their line, not the BUC. I misunderstood your comment my bad . You stand correct VALEN CACA BUC !

The BUC just shot themselves in the foot. They played it dirty against Gowen and Villareal y ahora si quedaron bien empinados los pendejos.

All these photos were taken by wanna-be photographer Gilbert Vasquez- el camarada de Begum, Garzorra y los bomberos pedos. El viejito del bigote chueco ahora resulto mas chueco porque consigio un contrato con United Brownsville. El carrio negro de el no sale de la casa de Begum. Hasta se me hace que son amantes los dos abuelitos.
