AHUMADA, BASTIAN: WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD?

By Juan Montoya
Remember the memorable arrest of former Mayor Pat Ahumada for DWI on Alton Gloor Road by the brother of commissioner Ricardo Longoria?

It was memorable because on the same day that it happened, were were treated to video form the police car camera that was widely disseminated on local news broadcasts and on the local newspaper's online edition.
Fast forward to a week ago Friday when assistant city attorney Allison Ann Bastian was arrested after she allegedly drank alcohol, drove and got involved in an auto accident.
In Pat's case, there was no accident and he starred morosely at the camera as he is handcuffed and hauled off to the drunk tank.
In Bastian's case, it took a full week before her mugshot was made available to local media. There is no word on whether the video of the arrest will be made available.
Now, we are privy to the fact that in Ahumada's case, then-police chief Carlos Garcia ordered Jimmy Manrique – over his objections – to release the video to the media. In Bastian's case, who ordered police to stonewall the media for a week before her mugshot was released?
In other words, what makes Bastian different from Ahumada? Gosh, don't tell us its politics. Hard to believe that could happen in a town like Brownsville, ain't it?

Nick Nolte was arrested in Brownsville!?! I love his movies. Why didn't anyone tell me he was here? Age is catching up with him, he looks 80!

What about the town clown Bean Ayala? He got a DWI in February, and it was kept quiet a shit!

Surely its POLITICS.....Brownsville politics at its best. Ahumada had political enemies who took full advantage of the event. Bastian has political friends and so the Herald goes with the flow. Its like Rene Oliviera's drunken accident on the Frontage Rd near Cheddars.....then commissioner Melissa Zamora (also Rene's campaign assistant) step in to intervene with the police investigation and give Rene a chance to "exit stage left", leave his date to take the rap, and left a victim in a mess because Rene had no insurance on his car. Where was the Herald then.....and it was during an election. Then there is Bean Ayala who was arrested for DWI in Feb.....no ugly mug shot, they used his Visitor's Bureau photo which the tax payers likely funded. This is a brutal city if you are out of grace with the "powers that be". As we saw recently, Judge Elia Conejo Lopes surely proved to be unethical in her hubby's campaign....but no one called her to task. No one called her and that campaign to task when they reached into the dung pile to try to use deception and lies to influence the public. Thank goodness her campaign efforts failed. The media goes with the money and political power....not the news.

I wonder if Bastian used the old chestnut of "do you know who I am?"

Yes, why the preferential treatment? What will happen to her position with the city? What is the city's HR official position on things like when her employess are
arrested and found guilty of DWI?
Personally, as adults, I find anyone who
drinks and drives, especially when you are
really drunk, a menace to society. How
many lives are at stake when drunk drivers
are out and about on the streets driving
around?
I am not innocent, but when I matured I
realized the lunacy of driving while under
the influence. It is not only a selfish and
irresponsible decision, drinking and driving has potentially fatal and negative long
reaching consequences for both the driver and society. Is it worth the risk ? Not in my
book. Just call a friend or a damn taxi,
can't afford a taxi, then stay home and
drink.

If Pat's arrest is "memorable," why do we need to "remember" it? Take an ESL class, juan.

REALLY! I hope you're being sarcastic. Three words are the answer LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LESBO!!!!!!!!!
It is common knowledge that most liberals are below par, less intelligent, low information, bottom line DUMBER that the average common sense person so libbers give each passes. Prime example: b HUSSEIN obamie, he will go down in history as the WORST EVIL PRESIDENT IN THE UNITED STATES. I'm sure Jimmy Carter is relief he's no longer consider the worst.

At least she looks better than Tetreau in her mug shot. Tetreau looked like Al Bundy in hers! Hahahaha! She has really aged and put on the pounds these last few years. If she decides to run she'll have to pull a "Pete Avila" and use an old photo on her campaign signs. #gross #gordinflona #pendeja #proclamationsforeveryone!

el double standard it is with city officials burn them at the stake when they want to or not. cca

Ahumada should have sued the hell out of the city and its officials for the outrageous treatment he received at the hands of anti-Ahumada officials during his purpurted DUI. If you bothered to look at the video, he looked sober; he certainly stood still like a rock. No swaying at all. he claims he had been followed continuously and set up.

He also should have brought a civil rights action against the county for its bogus indictment on the mistaken deposit of the $ 26,000 check. The first jury was hand-selected by the outgoing district court clerk who hated Ahumada. You could tell because the juror sheet had jurors from different cities in Cameron County whose numbers all ended in a zero; in other words, the totals were something like the following: Brownsville jurors (80), Harlingen (50), San Benito (30), Los Fresnos (20), Port Isabel (10). Statistically impossible.

I guess Ahumada didn't want to economically gain from the public's taxes to enrich himself, even though he deserved to be compensated for such illegal treatment. What a strong and honest man!

I decided to let the issue rest because I did not want to devide the city. I sleep well at night knowing I did my best and acted in the best interests of our city. I have been harassed by the corrupt and have always been vindicated.

Strong possibility he may be getting on her bottoms, like he continues doing with Yoli from the Civic Pavilion who ended up pregnant or you're going to deny the facts Charlie...

Pat looked sober? LOL! That loser would sit by himself wearing a cowboy hat at the bar at Irish Pub and then fall off the stool from being so drunk. Pinche pendejo. He thought he was above the law. And now he's playing Monday morning quarterback like he was the shit. Bro, if you were such a big shit, why didn't you fix the city when you were there? Fucking loser.
