STAFF UPRISING AT PORTER OVER PRINCIPAL REASSIGNMENT

By Juan Montoya
Brownsville Independent School District staff and other personnel have come to expect reassignments of principals as a matter of course in the district.
One day you're a principal here, a few years later you're a principal there. Once in a while, if you play your cards right and reach out and touch the right lever, you'll find yourself propelled into a corner office at the main building in the Glass Palace at Price Road.
Well, when the staff at Gladys Porter High School heard that their current principal Liz Valdez was getting reassigned, so they – as the so-called Porter Nation is wont to do – and the cheerleading brigade jumped into action and is now threatening to march into the streets and man the barricades to keep them ol' bureaucrats from destroying their school.
The word is that Hector Hernandez, the former Rivera High School principal, was assigned to Porter for the 2014-2015 school year.
None other than history teacher, webpage editor and Porter High School Cheer Coach Catherine Valdez (no relation to principal Valdez?) is said to have been at the forefront of the protest and had been a busy been sending out emails – and now we hear that the principal's assistant is sending emails to students – asking them to participate in a protest march against the transfer.
History teacher Valdez is said to have been brought on board at Porter from the precious school where she and the principal Valdez used to work together. In the call to arms, the writer texts:
Msg:
Sent: Wed, Jul 23 14 10:43 a.m.
"As some of you may know, our principal, Mrs.Valdez, has been reassigned from Porter to Main Office and a march  is underway to move to have her reinstated... Porter High School has been moving on up and we are fighting for our principal and our school... We will be making posters and banners tomorrow in L Building at 10 am and the march will take place on Friday at 7:30. Please forward the information, and all students, parents, faculty and staff are encouraged to help. The more we have participating, the better. Let's come together as the Porter Nation we are and keep our school in tact!"
After our post we received an email at 3:46 p.m. Wednesday from someone saying they were "Catvaldez" denying the veracity  of the narrative and demanding we remove the post. She said: "read your post about Porter High School and your post is completely incorrect. Please remove immediately." We stand by the story.
That is not all. We have also learned that principal Valdez's secretary ( Yvette Rubalcaba, Principal's Administrative Assistant ) is also texting former student to man (and women) the barricades and march on the main building on Friday. Her message is dated Wednesday at 9:36 a.m. when she is supposedly on the clock.
Now, we had heard rumblings about uneven student scores over at Porter and that there was some grumbling among the BISD administrators on why they hadn't improved the way they wanted them to.
Be that as it may, it is interesting that there are more than a few board members with some link to Porter High School. Minerva Peña was a former pom-pom girl like teacher Valdez. Hector Chirinos was principal there. Cesar Lopez has strong ties to the Southmost barrio and Catalina Presas-Garcia is a Porter graduate.
Will the stirring of the so-called Porter Nation check the hands of the administration which ordered the reasignment? Or will the tail wag the dog again and the administration have to back down in the face of the Porter Nation (well, the staff at least) marching in the streets?

Is La Liz Valdez like Dora Sauceda an opportunistic wench that use her connections to get advanced?
Didn't Dora fue a Dallas and got busted?
Liz is not too far behind, her job as a Porter principal is questionable, you should connect the dots and find out about her frindshp with Otis, Chirninos, Minerva and Cesar?

One teacher does not represent the Porter Nation especially one that came from another school. This is not the only School Principal to be moved in recent years and will not be the last. Therefore, why make a big thing about the situation when it has been a polity of the school system to move administrators each year? I am sure that Bobby will say that it is all a lie and that the Porter Nation is putting you (Juan) on their payroll.

The only staff members that want her to stay are the corrupt lackeys that owe their livelihood to Liz Valdez. History teacher Valdez is the perfect example of one such person. Let them all leave!

Liz Valdez is an excellent principal, she was an excellent science teacher,an excellent Dean of Instruction and an excellent head administrator. Hector Hernandez left Rivera High School under a dark cloud (remember the accusation of tampering with grades and signature?), his salary exceeds what some administrators make in the whole Brownsville ISD and yet he is rewarded by giving him another high school to be head principal? He will destroy the progress that Valdez has probably made at Porter, he will end up taking HIS own staff, pick and choose, believe HIS pals over staff that has probably been at Porter for years. No wonder a lot of GOOD teachers and GOOD administrators are LEAVING BISD to other districts and charter schools. No wonder charter schools are experiencing a double numbers enrollment in their schools; the good students are going to these schools. I feel sorry for the faculty at Porter HS and if they thought it was bad under Valdez, they dont know what is comming to them with their new principal.
* I dont work for Brownsville ISD thank God.

These two are biased... Catherine Valdez is her sister in law.. at least that's how she acted... she did not teach any students yet bossed everyone around... her main duty was dressing up the front foyer making harder for students to get to class. Custodians would shake on their shoes to see her because she treated them as a slave driver... now liz valdez, needs a change, porter needs someone.. no matter who just not liz valdez...... evette and Catherine can go to sped services and continue their chushie jobs over there if they want... let porter come out of the hole where liz valdez drove us.

JAJAJAJ....OH C'MON, FUNNIEST POST IN A WHILE....REALLY, THEY WANT TO HAVE A PROTEST FOR THIS LADY?

Anonymous... well, I guess I spoke too soon. It is just me that wants her gone. I should not have opened my mouth and included most. Sorry!

I anonymous, who posted at 1:39 p.m. would like to apologize for including "many want her gone." I do not know this to be fact, I just want her gone. Please forgive the rudeness.

I could not care any less. The whole district should be transferred..

2 board members wanted her gone. Shame on them for having double standards for south most families. Hector Hernandez. Seriously?

Whoever is instigating a revolt on BISD time should be reprimanded. Plain and simple.

Those that want her gone are the ones that are going to love Hector Hernandez. He sits on his behind and lets others pretend to do the work for him. Valdez is a hands on principal that does not tolerate laziness and there is a LOT of that going on in BISD high schools. Ms. Ruvalcaba moved from Rivera HS because she didnt want to work with Hernandez and now she ends up with him again. How ironic. She is also a very efficient principal's secretary and would probably not cover up all HIS mistakes. My suggestion to Ms. Rubalcava is to move to another school or department in BISD or go to the charter schools to work. They have A LOT of vacancies right now for the new school year. About doing all their behind the scenes work during clocked time, they are NOT THE ONLY ONES. BISD maintenance people take months to complete jobs that with all the people they have working should not take more than maybe weeks to finish; they take looooooooong "15 minute breaks" during clocked time, administrators are at coffee shops or shopping during work time. On one ocassion I got to see a then high school counselor buying groceries at 10 am at an HEB and and two hours later she was in her office at school drinking coffee with her counselor colleagues. Administrators at the BISD Price Road Building (AKA Glass Palace)have lunchons, reunions all day long with their friends administrators with the excuse of "planning" strategies and use OUR TAX dollars to buy that food and you are getting after a classified staff person because it is during her clocked time? Salaries comparison: 5 to 1 administrators vs. classified.

To find the truth, one must ask. Do the drapes match the carpet?

Every principal, every boss, will be liked by some and not others.

Mrs Rubalcaba is efficient, 1. Using her cell phone.. on phone all day talking to half Brownsville. She had to whisper due to the fact that parents, teachers, students surrounded her desk... still that did not detour her from keeping her friends happy hearing her on the phone, she was constantly on the phone. When off phone, 2. she was off campus getting food for Liz and her friends.
Ask that Catherine Valdez to show her class rosters for the time she was at Porter.. no classes.. that's nice, getting paid to boss custodians around... ask any custodian and they will tell you that she bossed them around more than Liz Valdez and Moreno.. well Moreno was to busy in a certain math teachers class and when wife got wind he changed his visits to a certain clerk... Needless to say he kept s busy with his female favorites. How did Liz oversee this and do nothing you tell me. Her newest addition to her suck up club K. Garza, walked around school like she was mad at the world. It was obvious Garza only smiled or treated people nice only when she noticed Valdez was watching. Hector Hernsndez is a step up. I wish I would of known the change was coming, I would have stayed at working at Porter. To bad so sad, I just couldn't see and take all the wrongs happening and continue to stay. Good luck to everyone, change is GOOD. I'm proof......

Porter Nation! Pfff! Whoever coined the term is an idiot! Where was this nation before the Billy Garza glory days? And where have they gone since? Losers! Porter is the worst sol in the Nation! More like that, huh!?

Southmost is MATAMOROS! Idiot!

You apparently need to take a geography course buddy because Southmost is part of Brownsville, which is in the United States, while Matamoros is in Mexico. Your're the idiot. Moron

It is funny how people hide behind an anonymous post, but perhaps that is the only way posts are allowed on this site. Grudges only come from lazy people and jealousy usually follows and is very evident in the post. Principal Valdez is spoken of negatively because those that did not like her leadership were those "ducks" who have been teaching without substance for years. Get over it! You people gripe about everything under the sun, but from where I stand as a parent, Porter High School had never been showcased like it was last year and your negative comments about teachers on that campus showcase the jealousy you maintain. Never before have I heard my student express the newness and the excitement about the school. You degrade only yourself and if you are still on this campus next year teaching, the only people that will be hurt are the STUDENTS... something all of this turmoil never considered. It is a shame to lose people, who positively impact our kids. If I knew who you were, I would petition to have you removed. As far as Charter Schools, well, they are the future and more and more pop up each year. Unfortunately, BISD will not recognize this until it is too late. Shame on those of you for making your jealousy public.

For 7:25pm.... you are so funny... you yourself posted anonymous lol.....just reading the tread 1 plus 1 equals (C. Valdez).... "showcase"... showcase what? Teachers are in the front lines polishing our students... you would know nothing about this... what's worse Liz Valdez allowing this to happen on her watch is pathetic. We know it's you........good luck with Mr hernandez. ...

As a parent from Brownsville, Texas, I must write a response to the negative comments made about Catherine Valdez. Ms. Valdez was my son's teacher at Besteiro Middle School and she forever changed the atmosphere of that campus and the way my son thinks about getting out of this town to make something of himself. None of the comments that are posted about this lady are true. If I remember correctly, this lady had spent more time on the campus and helping students, including cooking and feeding them, than any other teacher I had ever met. I know that at Porter, she did the same, spending lots of hours at that school. I would appreciate it very much if whoever you are that is posting this negative stuff would just stop. You must not be very happy with your life and you are probably one of those teachers that is there only to collect a check. If porter high school is losing good teachers and administrators that is a shame and the only people that will suffer will be my son, one of the students at porter. The comments made about people that work at porter sound like they come from someone who works there. Do you think that we parents care about your opinion? We don't.

Porter HS was showcased this year? How? The boys soccer program did not make the playoffs for the first time in school history. Because of her meddling. The boys basketball program, after making it to the Sweet 16 the year before, suffered because of the meddling by removing the assistant coach from the basketball class, she had the counselirs place 60 kids in the JV/Varsity class and did not give the head coach help, then she got rid od the freshman basketball athletic period. Then, she didn't want to complete the paperwork to designate Porter High School as an Early College High School. So Porter is they only high school that will not be an early college next year. she sends girls home for dress code violations when she wears skin right clothing and stiletto heels. As a parent, I AM CELEBRATING THAT SHE WAS MOVED! As for those teachers that are celebrating, they are not worthless nor lazy. They are dedicated individuals who have suffered at her hands.

That's funny shit!

Liz never really wanted to be Principal at Porter, she knew she was not ready. Now don't get me wrong, Liz is really smart, and a type A personality, but was not ready for the top job at Porter. I feel sure that Liz will not balk at getting out of Porter.

Mrs. K. Valdez could have been good to some students at Besterio... the comments here have only pointed out the fact that she had it easy at Porter. If she did stay after school is because she was paid to do cheerleading. The problem is her starting these revolt against BISD administration in behave of Mrs Valdez. People talk and inquire into the why she felt the need in fighting for her beloved principal. If she is this magical teacher you as a parent describe, it does not matter who the principal is, she will still out shine her co-workers. The obvious is that she hurts by losing her protector Mrs liz valdez, because now she will have the same amount of students, classes, and duties as the rest. The argument is why she did not have to teach like other teachers. Why was she given the power to boss around the custodians like she was the principal. If that privilege is due to her work ethic like she displayed at Besterio than she can earn them privileges from Mr Hernandez, or even Mrs. Dora Sauceda, Mrs. Aguilar from lopez, or even Mrs Rachel Ayala herself. I'm sure all these great principals would have an eye for someone with her tremendous ability to inspire students, and or observe the over time she spends in the search of improving their school.
Why the fight, just continue to work hard regardless who the boss is. So "parent" her actions just go totally against to who you say she was. Sorry, this is my outside point of view after talking to history teachers, custodians, hall monitors, and some students. ... retired teacher, substitute teacher that wants to continue to sub.. therefore sorry I'm anonymous too.

I saw liz valdez in a board meeting vs a coach from porter. I heard the grievance and it seemed liz had no answers to give to the coach. How many more grievances did she have... that's good question.

Please send Dawn Hall back to Lopez High School. We are miserable under a principal who acts like a warden. We were a great campus under Miss Hall. State Recognized and happy to lead the pack!
