DETAILS EMERGE IN UNREPORTED CRASH BY CHIEF DEPUTY

By Juan Montoya
A television news report of a collision involving Cameron County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Gus Reyna indicates that the crash that occurred about two weeks ago happened in Brownsville and other news media are reporting that there was another passenger in Reyna's county-issued 2011 Ford Expedition who was not a county employee.
Other reports indicate that the two crashed into the car of a woman who lives in Brownsville and that Reyna talked her out of calling the police by promising to fix her car and paying for the accident.
District Attorney investigators with the Public integrity Unit were said to have interviewed the woman who was involved in the collision today.
Sheriff Lucio told Action 4 News Sergio Chapa that Reyna told was involved in an accident in a Ford Expedition owned by Cameron County. Lucio would not release all the details of the accident – then time of day it occurred, where it took place, what the name of the woman was, whether she sustained any injuries, and why no police report was ever filed about the accident with the Brownsville police.
Sources say that initial interviews with the woman indicate that there was alcohol involved in the accident but did not specify whether it was the woman or the two occupants of Reyna's car, or both.
Meanwhile, the identity of the other occupant of Reyna's car has not been released other than it was a former deputy with the sheriff's department who had gone on to become an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in another part of the state.
Even though Cameron County policy states that any county employee that gets into an accident in a county vehicle must immediately be tested for drugs and alcohol, Reyna was never tested.
Lucio said he was out of town at the time of the accident and that Reyna notified him about the accident after the sheriff returned to the Rio Grande Valley and that Reyna was disciplined by being ordered to pay for the damages to both vehicles.
The repairs were made at Ramiro Partida's Auto Body Shop in San Benito where the damaged part of both vehicles were found and seized by investigators. Although an exact figure was not immediately available, sources say that the damages to the vehicles are estimated to be worth around $5,700.
“Accidents happen,” Lucio told Action 4 News. “For an employee of 30 years’ time who has had no other disciplinary problems, making him pay for the damages was enough punishment.”
Reyna was out of town on a training conference and could not be reached for comment.

You mean Gus Reyna was with a woman other than his wife? So, Gus Reyna strikes another vehicle and then fails to report it? Or he talks the other operator out of making a report? Now it sounds like the damage is over $1500.00 and Gus Reyna fails to do his duty as a sworn police officer? Omar Lucio, the worn down Sheriff and the one who probably wants his boy, Gus Reyna to be Sheriff covers it up, or uses a BS excuse of being out of town? Lucio did the same thing at the Harlingen Police Department, so he'll cover the incident up because he understands that being unfaithful is part of the law enforcement code. You member Lucio! You broke out a window because the back door closed on you when you were Interrogating a female in the back seat in the prone position. Or, do you remember the number of walkie-talkie's that left at female's houses when serving and protecting. Remember the old saying, "I am God's gift to women! "Look at me like God and you are my disciples! "do as I say and not as I do!
A real test for the office of Luis Saenz whether they will find sufficient evidence to Indict since he failed to report an accident, cause possible injury, abuse his position or oppression with talking the other driver out of it? Gus Reyna should be Indicted or he should have enough sense to retire and just forget that dream of being Sheriff!

I don't think county employees should be driving around people that are not covered by the county insurance. Imagine if the alleged passenger in the county vehicle would have sustained an injury....the tax payers would have picked up the big bill.

We all know, in the law enforcement circle, that Chief Deputy Gus Reyna is an alcoholic. It is very well known along with his other family problems.

Based on the information that is coming out. He has circumvented county policy by not reporting the accident in a county vehicle, not taking an alcohol/drug test and having an unauthorized individual in the county unit.

The D.A.'s office should speak to the other person with Reyna. If this individual is a federal agent then that person has no choice but to tell the truth. Because if they lie then there career is over. That would support the fact Reyna had been consuming alcoholic beverages.

Regardless of his spotless record of thirty years...he knowingly and willfully made a conscious decision to circumvent county policy for his own benefit. Lesser deputies would be fired. Such as the last group for cheating on an exam. Of course they were also indicted for the criminal act.

Sheriff Lucio do the right thing and terminate Gus Reyna. Otherwise how can you take action against lesser deputies, for disciplinary matters, when you have set precedent with Reyna. You are failing the county by doing nothing.

Reyna knows very well that anytime an employee is involved in a county car accident that said employee has 2 hours to submit to an alcohol and drug test, he knows this very well because whenever this happens to his deputies that's the first thing they do is to sent the deputy for testing. Plus Reyna knows very well that no one that is not a county employee is allowed to ride in a county vehicle, he knows that very well because of liability purposes. If this would of happened to one of the deputies this would be reason for termination but since it happened to him all he received was a discipline to pay repairs from his own pocket. Pura Politica, the sheriff is just covering and making up excuses for Reyna.

Sheriff, are you really that dense? Gus violated policy and possibly some state laws. Are you going to let HIS issue with alcohol bring you down? You are setting precedent for your deputies along with a bad example for them. It is time for Gus to face his demons and get the help he needs regarding his addiction. You should be smart enough to know that your actions (or inactions) bring shame to your department and the many fine deputies that work for you.

Well in this case the federal agent "passenger" was also a participant in the cover up. All parties should be brought to justice.

Does anyone know the identity of the ICE officer? Wondering if they reported the accident as they are required to as well.

I remember when Lucio and Gus would make fun of Conrado Cantu. No experience, no education, now the Sheriff with so much education but no common sense is protecting his Chief, Karma Karma Karma, this accident is the least of their worries, the Feds are coming!!!! Cucooo

I will not vote for that old senile old man. He is 84 years old, time to look for a nursing home.

i am confused. According to Sheriff, he punished the chief by making him pay for the damages that to the vehicles. But in reality, it was the chiefs idea to pay for the damages when he convinced the person in the other car not to call the police.

Smells like bull shit to me

If this happened to any other citizen the cops (some corrupt, others not) would have thrown the book at him/her. This is very indicative that we do have a corrupt system here.

Anonymous said...

Having him pay for damages is not part of the policy it's a good and valet reason to fire him, that's what they do with their employees, and Reyna knows it very well.

Had that been one of the deputies, they would have been crucified. The Sheriff's Office administration is quick to terminate anyone who violates their BS policies or the ones they make tailor make so they can clean house. According to Lucio his motto is "Integrity, Accountability and Service". When the hell have he or the Reyna brothers ever lived by that code? These jackasses think they broke the mold after they became cops, their examples of leadership are piss poor! The days of compadrismo are coming to an end. They better roll up their sleeves and learn how to work for a living! (I doubt they will though)

This behavior is acceptable in Crabbucketville. These officials stay in Crabbucketville (Brownsville) because in another city they would not get away with this behavior. Cover your ass today so you can cover my ass later.

I know of a deputy who was terminated for an automobile accident while in a county vehicle. There was no cover up for him, no option of paying for the damages, no disciplining, it was just TERMINATION. Why would you treat employees differently? What's good for one, should be good for all. Now this former Sheriff's Deputy is unemployed and every time he gets a lead on a potential job, the Sheriff's office shoots down his prospects by giving him a bad job referral. Again, it's not what you know but who you know and how well you contribute to their political campaigns.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about Lucio's response to this, you all are the one's who keep re-electing him!!

Anonymous said...

So why are you confused?

HOW BOUT WE LET ALL THE THIEVES JUST PAY FOR WHAT THEY TOOK AND THAT SHOULD BE PUNISHMENT ENOUGH.

Anonymous said...

AS A CITIZEN, TAX PAYER AND VOTER...I DEMAND THAT YOU OMAR LUCIO FIRE GUS REYNA IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT DELAY. I AM YOUR EMPLOYER ALONG WITH THE OTHER CITIZENS OF CAMERON COUNTY. WE WANT ACTIONS TAKEN NOW...............

Anonymous said...

NOW THAT YOUR BEING NICE, HOW BOUT WE JUST GIVE EVERYONE A SECOND CHANCE AND EMPTY THE PRISON.

Anonymous said...

Yes ...yes....nothing less of that is correct...He should be terminated! #!!

What a bunch a bull. Deputies are fired and arrested for cheating on a stupid entry level tests with on their phones, but doesn't do shit when one crashes a county vehicle while drunk and on his day off. According to media outlets, this occurred on August 24. That falls on a weekend and everyone knows that the chief doesn't work on the weekend cause he is too busy drinking it up at the bars.

Who the hell cares about Krausse? That was many moons ago when policies and laws were less stringent regarding the situation. Reyna is HERE and NOW.

Uh, you are stupid! What this "you all"; I didn't vote for him.

That's what happened when cris was caught stealing by p.u.b.

Accidents happen? Covering up was no accident. He had the intent, means and commited the action.
