NEW WORK SCHEDULE IRKS BROWNTOWN COPS

By Juan Montoya
Brownsville Police Dept. Chief Orlando Rodriguez dropped a wet towel on the members of the local Brownsville Police Officers Association just in time for the holiday and vacations schedule.
Now, instead of having the 4 10-hour days, the new schedule calls for police officers to work a five-day, eight-hour 40.
For those police officers who had counted on the previous schedule and arranged their holidays and time off with their fellows to write their ports and cover their beats, this means that all those plans are out the window.
"These changes, coming as they are, just before the holidays, throw a wrench in the works," said a cop who requested anonymity. "The chief could have waited until the New Year because everyone had already worked out their work schedule under the four-day, 10-hour work week."
Rodriguez is not the rank-and-file's favorite administrator. Many officers resent the fact that he has handed out choice job slots to sentimental favorites and sycophants. But with this sudden turn of events, it will force officers to spend extra time filling out their reports, possibly straining the department's overtime budget.
That, in turn, might mean that there will be less of a police presence on the street as they will be forced to dedicate a couple of hours to report writing.
"There's no telling why this was done," said out source. "But ti came at precisely the wrong time."
With the winter weather approaching, will there be a sudden increase in "blue flu" as a result of the new work schedule?

It happened because of the rookies. They were complaining and Continue to do so. They have no idea what seniority or doing your time is.

Rodriguez doesnt care about his employees thats why. Like they said officers had planned trips, paid boat cruises all for the holidays and now they will have to cancel, thanks chief. Cmdr dale was the one stating how the city was spending too much overtime on 10 hr shifts. Of course, there focus is looking good ont their image to try and save citys budget. In reality, 8 hr shift isnt going to save money either. You have officers that call in sick or are out on fmla regardless. So this doesnt make sense. I dont understand why the union doesnt file grievance. Everyone is scared to talk, we must remember our officers put their lives in risk everyday and they deserve better treatment. Some of these officers had scheduled holiday time off in advanced months back. Hopefully Rodriquez retires in december like he said, get a new chief in town and do some better action for our officers.

Cops are Sheeple, too.

The chief had said that ten hour days would save the city money on overtime costs. What happened ? He changed his mind?

The four day work week was working wonders in keeping officers on the force. Since the 4 ten hour work days were implemented we were losing less officers to border patrol and federal age cues that pay more. Now with 5 day work weeks alot of young guys might be drawn to the better paying jobs. Not good for our city our department and our citizens.

I don't know why the complaining. They don't help the citizens much either. I've called to request more police patrols in my street and to this day I have NOT seen a single patrol car. Cops are allowed to take their police cars home. There is a police car parked on a daily basis in an apartment complex where a friend of mine lives and she tells me the cop lives in those apartments. I've seen police cars parked at regular homes during odd hrs. and they are NOT writing out a domestic report. I was in an auto accident not that long ago and it took about an hr. for a police officer to get to the area where the accident happened and it was at 7 A. M.!!
Cops, like teachers, want holidays and Summer months off. What about being in the profession for the LOVE OF THE PROFESSION? Custodians at schools DO NOT get all two weeks off or the whole Summer. They don't pick their time off. Nurses, people that work at ER, firemen, EMT's work LONG hrs. Double or Triple shifts, but hey, we all want what's good for "me" and not necessary to think about others.

Why not give the officers notice of this change to enable them to get their schedules aligned. Seems Rodriguez is out of touch with his officers and with life as an officer. As for seniority vs rookie; its bullshit. We have some rookies far more capable than those who are senior to them...experience is good, but some of the rookies have more education and are more willing to work than their seniors. Chief of Police is a political position and it would seem that Rodriguez is dealing with his force as a politician, not as a leader.

So what Brownsville cops are always using the same old excuse to get there way.let them leave plenty of vets out there who will take their place and they are better trained to handle high stress situations unlike the very green college graduate..

Suck it up... it's your duty. Nerds with badges now think you are entitled to what ever works for you, it's what's best for the people, we pay you, you work for us. Do your job and respect whst chain of command orders you to do.

The old chief said he would give it a try to see if it worked, pendejo. It's not working and now you're crying. Grow up and do the job you actively chose to do.

They won't leave because of the days, they will leave because of the pay because federal (Customs and border patrol) jobs are still working 5 days not 4.

AS LONG AS THE "DONUT" SHOP HOURS DO NOT CHANGE , THEY SHOULDN'T COMPLAIN !!

We pay you? Please you minimum wage earners and unemployed citizens of Beantown don't pay anything. My $7000 a year property taxes put your kids thru school. You don't pay me!

His wife who works for him (payroll) gets all she wants(private locked restroom, which was for all females to use in the department) and gets her FRIENDS positions she wants for them and whoever had that position gets transferred somewhere else even if they were more qualified.

Donut Shop hours? How freaking creative! You must be some sort of genious.

If you a nerd with badge or a city of brownsville cop, and you refer to the people you should protect and serve in that manner, you are a piece of shit. People who pay taxes and respect the law do pay cops. Your 7000 tax also goes where go wants it to go. Thing is cops become cops because they want revenge with life, they hate the fact they are wimps without the gun or badge. Look at Los Fresnos cop killed wife, I saw so many fat ass cops in parade last night, leave donuts alone lard asses can't afford one more bite. If you dont want to pay the 7000 move out.
