WORK HERE, SHOP HERE? NOT FOR OUR FIRE CHIEF

By Juan Montoya
Each year, Cardenas Motors donates a new car to a deserving student enrolled in the Brownsville Independent School District.
Whether it's done for the publicity or because they want to really help out the community, the gesture is a nice touch at giving something back to the community.

We are all acquainted with the Cardenas family and its construction company that seemed to want to cut corners and get away with meeting the very basic requirements in their subdivisions. For many years, Cameron County has been good to the family, even when they tried to skirt the model subdivision rules and not install sidewalks or curbs and gutter. That's just the nature of the beast.

Each year the BISD administration and board of trustees members present the donated car to the student with much fanfare and use the presentation to thank Cardenas Motors for their generosity.
So what does BISD trustee and new Brownsville Fire Dept. Chief Carlos Elizondo do when he got appointed to his new gig and drew his hefty paycheck?
Did he go to Harlingen and buy his Mercedes Benz from the Cardenas Metroplex and patronize the people who pay taxes and live in Cameron County?

Not exactly. We were surprised when we were told that Carlos and his folks were on television posing for Mercedes-Benz of San Juan, in Hidalgo County.
Sure enough. a perusal of the San Juan car dealer shows our new chief with his family posing in front of the new Mercedes-Benz ride.

We have always been told to shop local and help out the economy. But going out to San Juan instead of doing business with the folks who support the school district is probably not sitting well with Renato and Mary Rose, never mind Ricky, Rene and Reba.

And do the public officials make the trek to Cameron County to buy their cars here? We doubt it.
Elizondo probably got a good deal from San Juan that would justify going out of the county and that's understandable. It is, after all, a free country. But then to appear in a  commercial for the Hidalgo County Mercedes-Benz franchise might have been rubbing it in just a tad too much.

If that bothers you that the Chief went to San Juan, do a story on how many cars Cameron County buys from out of the Valley. ALL OF THEM, just seems to be cheaper that way. Sorry, but the chief needs to watch his budget for his family and get the bet deal. Juan do the story on Cameron County, you will be surprised at what you find!!!! To bad Emma Trevino is gone!!

Ok Juan I can't believe I am doing this but I am going to stand in defense of the fire chief.

Cameron county dealers don't seem to give a rats ass about the people around here. Go to Charlie Clark Nissan and you'll see a lot of eager salesperson who push Sentras like crazy and then management does their best to low ball your ride and make an exorbitant profit in the process. Go to Tipton or Tipotex who will gladly sell you a ride but after the sale they won't give two shits about you. I could go on and on like Bert Ogden In Harlingen where you not be low balled into a sale but they'll shoehorn you stupid packages jacking up the price of your dream ride.

Yes I am talking about car dealerships only but let's be honest here, if you really want a good deal on a ride Cameron County dealerships are not the way to go. In fact I've heard of people who go outside the valley to get a real deal since a good chunk of dealerships in the Rio Gende Valley are in cahoots with each other in one way or another.

I support my local econimy and counties but I find it real hard to stand behind our local car dealerships.

Hasta lo que no comes te hace mal Juanito. It's not your money so who are you to tell someone else how to spend theirs? If they got a better deal elsewhere good for them. Cardenas will learn the hard way that they have competition now and have to stop ripping off people.

This is a dumb article

What a shame, after all the Cardenas family has done for the Brownsville community and for BISD....that is a slap in the face Elizondo.

Elizondo should resign the fire chief position and the BISD board positon immediately . This is outrageous behavior and non supportive of Brownsville. He should go to San Juan the ugly guy.

Elizondo does for no one except if it helps him.

Cardenas are thiefs. What part of their huge mercedes Benz settlement did they share with the community? Well done mr elizondo! I applaud you. You spend your wife's and your hard earned money where you see fit. Congrats on the new vehicle. Happy holidays. Keep up the good work

Cardenas Motors has lost a lot of franchises in the past 10 years. First, Jeep went to Don Johnson, later the rest of the Chrysler lines moved. Then GM took away all its lines from Cardenas during the 2008 crash- Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. Not to be outdone, Toyota recently threw in the towel and shifted the franchise from Cardenas to Bert Ogden in Harlingen. Maybe there is a reason why the fire chief went to San Juan to purchase a Mercedes. I'd give him a pass on this one.
