VAGRANTS, NOT ARSON, MAIN SUSPECTS IN EL JARDIN BLAZE

By Juan Montoya
Investigators from the Brownsville Fire Department's Fire Marshal's Office were at the scene today to determine whether arson was to blame for a fire that was reported on the roof of the old El Jardin Hotel early Saturday.

Firefighters battled the blaze atop the roof and on the top floor for nearly two hours after the 4 a.m. alarm was sounded battling the fire, high winds, freezing temperatures. The cold required firefighters to rehab and warm up every 20 minutes. An exterior trash dumpster and some mattresses also caught on fire on the ground.

A Valley News Central report quoted BFD Chief Carlos Elizondo saying he suspected arson was the cause of the blaze.

“We suspect the fire may have been started by someone since there was no electricity in the building and there was no lightning strikes last night,” said Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo. “We have also had problems with that area in the past with kids going in and out of the building,” he added.

A witness told firefighters that a suspicious van with was seen in the area when the fire started.

The van's license plate information was obtained and is currently being investigated as a possible suspect vehicle by the Brownsville Police Department.

The Brownsville Herald reported that the building belongs to the Reyes Ponce Environmental LLC, a Fort Worth-based demolition and environmental remediation firm. Other people who have shown interest in acquiring the building have backed off quoting the enormous cost of asbestos mitigation and rehab of the structure.

Some don't believe that the fire was intentionally set and that a fire sued by vagrants to keep warm may have been the cause behind it.

"When you set a building on fire, you set it on the ground floor," said a former firefighter. "A fire set on the roof isn't going to bring the building down like it did in 9-11. Heat travels upwards."

The fire marshal's report has not been completed or released.

STUPIDEST COMMENT I'VE EVER HEARD/READ. THE MORON "FORMER FIREFIGHTER" DOES NOT BELIEVE A FIRE WILL NOT SPREAD BECAUSE IT IS ON TOP. LET'S TEST THAT THEORY ON HIS HOME, WE'LL START A FIRE AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE ROOF AND WE'LL SEE IF HE'LL BE SHITTING HIS PANTS HOPING IT WILL NOT SPREAD THROUGH THE ATTIC, ETC ETC.

Where does it say "its not going to spread".

And now the police department is providing security for the building on city time. How is it that tax payers are paying for police officers to provide security of private property not belonging to the city?
