TRUMP AS JETHRO CLAMPETT:...The Japanese prime minister aped his extended handshake, looking as awkward as a new friend might look, perhaps a new friend who knew he wouldn't be a friend for long. He torched Australia's elected leader, Malcolm Turnbull, in a long-distance phone call, played footsies with Russia's Vladimir Putin and annoyed the hell out of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. Oh, and he was somewhat gracious when on the phone with mighty China's Xi Jinping. Republican Donald J. Trump may be rich, but his social skills are those of, well, the Beverly Hillbillies. Yeah, Jethro grown-up. Who knows where this sad tale of disgust is headed, but one thing is certain: Trump is not out to be like any other world dictator. He wants a bit of love from the citizenry, something dictators don't give a damn about. Trump wants to be on TV, again something dictators don't always desire, their initial inkling being to shut down TV networks out to expose them. No, Trump is not Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, and not Fidel Castro, either. Trump wants to be the life of the party, so happiness is something he will always chase, at least for himself. Strong-arm dictators need no parties, no joy. They are at peace with terrorizing the people. Still, it's early in Trump's days, I know. But the clash of on-going immigration raids out west and his weekends in ritzy Palm Beach may be headed into some sort of darker segue in a movie with so many sub-plots that an onlooker is simply left with the idea that, in the best-case scenario, something happens to the film's star way before the flick ends and a happy ending eventually arrives.
