THE CUBAN COMMUINITY'S GIFT TO BROWNSVILLE

(Ed.'s note: Tucked way at a corner in Washington Park is a monument called the Cuban Circle, which is in effect a tribute to Cuban revolutionary Jose Marti./ A bust of Marti was included originally, but that was taken by unknown vandals. The poems above are but a small part of the Cuban patriot's works. Marti was fighting the Spanish and died in battle against them.)

It seems that some of the people in Brownsville do not know the meaning of respect. It is a shame that when someone does their best to contribute to the community a piece of culture and art, some undignified individual decides to abuse it. When a person does these kinds of things, it shows that they are unhappy and evil and it may be that it is in reaction of how their self-esteem is at fault. A person who is not happy with themselves
does things to attack those who are happy and contributing to society. They need to dig and hole and crawl in it and I would like to be the first shovel in the first dirt cover. I will personally visit the location in the morning. The epitaph on the statue is very appropriate, and sadly, we are now being lead by an individual who thinks at the same level as the destructive members of the Brownsville Community, like those who destroy the beautiful art work at the Capitol Theater. We need to "trump" them out!!!!

I might be mistaken BUT there were a lot of Cubans in Brownsville in the mid 1970's. Some of the stores downtown, before the Asian invasion, were owned by Cubans. They didn't have a "club" per say but they were a tight community and, like the Jewish community, did help the city of Brownsville grow. Today's Cuban community are mostly what Miami throws out or what Mexico didn't keep so the stores owned by Cubans downtown today are mostly second hand stores.
By the way, this story about the Jose Marti monument is RECYCLED.
