Cantu had been a coach at several campuses. This year he had been promoted to assistant defensive football coach with the Pace High School Vikings. In the photo above, he is shown coaching the Stell Intermediate School Warriors. A staff member of the administration at the school said they were all saddened by his passing.

He died  Friday morning while at a scrimmage between the Vikings and the PSJA team at Sams Memorial Stadium. His brother said that it was characteristic of Cantu to have died doing something that he loved.

Officials announced that Vikings defensive line coach Cantu at a local hospital.

The Brownsville Herald reported online that shortly after the beginning of the Pace-PSJA Memorial scrimmage, Cantu collapsed on the turf field. Pace athletic trainers, Sarah Gulick and Matthew Gross, were first to respond and other coaches tried to help as Cantu sat up with what appeared to be blood dripping from his forehead.

Cantu was laid on the ground and soon after athletic trainers started performing CPR on him. Emergency medical personnel arrived just minutes later, continued CPR and were then forced to use a defibrillator to revive Cantu from a suspected heart attack.

May he rest in peace, our son was honored to have played for him back at Faulk Middle School. Our prayers and deepest condolences to his family. He was a passionate man who loved coaching and football. In the end he departed this Earth in true fashion, he left everything on the field!

R.I.P. coach
Behind the scenes guy who sacrificed a lot of family time to do what he loved.
One of many unsung heroes at BISD
Hopefully the school board and superintendent offered their employees a decent life insurance policy. Guys like him is why my kids stay at bisd and will not attend the charter schools. No matter how much I dislike the board and their policies, at least BISD hires BISD products and not out of state applicants

You are right, yet there he was standing in the heat during his summer break. Obviously you don't have a profession you enjoy, or you would understand. To be 14 or 15 years young and bring a stadium full of people to their feet and see your parents smile, oh what a thrill. I miss those days. I am an accomplished law enforcement officer and my parents are still proud. I cannot tell them what I do now. They cannot brag about my accomplishments. So they tell stories of our playing days. Those stories made possible by guys like Coach Cantu, who taught me to believe in myself and always do the right thing. And for what? Not for the money, he did it for the kids. These coaches work from 6 am to midnight on game days. For minimal pay. They chaperone 80 kids that parents trust them with on a daily basis.
What a valuable individual. Thanks to ALL the coaches at all levels. We didn't win any state titles, but we are winning in the game of life. Still on a team, still competing, still playing by the rules.

This should serve as a moment to reflect for the coaches. Most of them are fat and out of shape. What happened to him is not a matter of "he died doing what he enjoyed" or "poor guy he was a dad, husband, son..." Guy died almost doing nothing in the sun. Such a bad way to die, but speaks a lot of the obesity epidemic. Not a good example for kids who will grow up to think that it is OK to be fat when older.

He already did ...

Coach Cantu, a proud member of the most influential job revolving kids, left
this earth doing what he loved best - coaching. I can only imagine the number of children he touched with this football and life lessons, his modeling of what was right to do and helping each decide to emulate him as they grow into adulthood. This would be the best tribute anyone could pay him- to become someone who can guide and lead someone like he led you. I offer my condolences to his immediate family, to the BISD coaching family and all the BISD staff who were fortunate enough to have known such a man! We never know when we will be called to the next level, so make up your mind to do something with your life, just like Art did. May he rest in peace -
Godspeed, Art! We will meet again and you can coach my team in heaven. How great it is to see all his friends that tried so hard to come to his aid that day, but once HE wants us up there and calls that signal or play, there is nothing that can be done. Thanks to those who also used their skills to try to keep him with us a little bit longer.

A.T at 1:45, where are you coming from. Show some respect and I do not know you, but I bet you think you are a "God's gift to women!" At least Art was a gift to the young kids in BISD because they believed in him and respected him for the proper gentleman that he was. Many of us are "overgrown" for reasons that are many, but that doesn't keep us from trying our best to be good and not cutting everyone down. Hope you never regret your words!

Don't let words heat you up, Javier Sandoval. You are viciously attacking others freely expressing their opinions. Such little men always want to do that.

Amen

Says the little pussy who hides behind intials.. You attack my friends character and profession and but want to be a little bitch aboutit.. This is me freely expressing my opinion..

I am sure his family knows that BISD does have a $15,000 life insurance on all present employees plus his teachers' retirement fund has $10,000. His entire family is a plus for our community, smart, intelligent and humble. This will assist them in adjusting to his loss for right now but no amount of money will ever replace Artie to his family and friends.

So he's the one that writes all the crap.
What an ASSHOLE!

tom landrie said...

What if I send all you write to your employer?

tom landrie said...

Lol you are assuming many things about what I said. First, what I said is not disrespectful, it's an opinion. Second, I can say any opinions I want. You are free to think anything else you want about me.

I think what Javier was trying to say AT is speak your mind but don't hide like a coward behind anonymity.

Unknown said...

Who you talking about ?

Unknown said...

I guess AT you got a hold of Art's medical records...and know more about his health than anyone...you are wrong... some of us fat people are healthier than what ever body you think is healthy. Thin people suffer from more problems and they also drop dead suddenly.
