JUT HOW RESTRICTED ARE US-MEXICO BORDER CROSSINGS?

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Just this morning as most of the residents on the Cameron County/USA were abiding  by the shelter in place declaration issued by County Judge Eddie Trevino, I received a call from a former Grafico newspaper reporter from Matamoros.

He told me that he had just crossed over the Gateway Bridge and was wondering what grocery stores were open on the Brownsville side.

"Most of them," I said. "You might have to stand in line so they can keep the number of people inside down to 25 people, but it doesn't take long."

Then I asked him how he was able to cross the bridge since the U.S. Government had issued restrictions on travel for Mexican citizens with visas except for emergencies.

"I didn't have any trouble at all," he said. "I told them I was going to the grocery store and then to get a prescription at Walgreen's and they said ok. After that I'm going to do some electrical work on a couple of trailers before I go back."

Did they test you for the virus?," I asked. "They say it's really spreading in Mexico."
"Nahh, bato. They just let me through, no questions. I cross almost every day."

Not long after that I got a call from an old high school friend of mine who said he was going to Mata to get a few things at Garcia's and did I want something from there.

"Is it an emergency?," I asked him.

"No, why?," he asked.

"I thought travel was restricted because of the COVID-19 stuff," I said.
"They never gave me any trouble going or coming," he said. "I always get a couple of bottles and as long as I pay the tax no one has ever stopped me. You want me to bring you one?

"No," I said. "I might as well go over myself. Apparently, those so-called restrictions don't apply to us here."

How's this for a twist in the plot:

The House of Representatives could elect Obama Speaker of the House on January 2, 2021 — and if there had not been a President elected by the Electoral College, then Obama would be President. That would be delicious. The prohibition against a third term is only that he couldn’t ‘run’ for a third term.

Go and check the bridge pedestrian line at 5 am. Hundreds of Visa holders going to “donate” plasma to Brownsville downtown. No body check those people medically when crossing. And Tamaulipas are getting COVID 19. “Puro pasale con los cistoms”.
