BPD SHUTS DOWN TRESPASSERS IN EMPTY DOWNTOWN STORE

(Ed.'s Note: Brownsville Police Dept. officers were called to the corner of 10th and Washington streets after local residents complained that several men (two asleep inside) and a third one keeping watch outside broke into the vacant Casa Anyer, a frequently vandalized building that used to house a second-hand clothing store.

But as usual, the cops arrived too late and the trespassers were gone before they arrived. The trespassers were defiant in their occupation of the broken-into building telling a motorist that they were part "de una ganga" who would get him for taking their picture.

Since the second-hand store closed almost two years ago, its glass plate windows have been broken numerous times and used as a crash pad by vandals and drug users. The building is located half a block from City Hall and directly across 10th Street from the old Coca Cola Building now occupied by a coffee shop operated by District 4 city commissioner Pedro Cardenas and his wife.

It wasn't until a concerned citizen and local businessman Ezequiel Silva called the police on the trespassers that the city forced the owner to board and lock the building. Now the entire block looks deserted despite the millions invested city through its Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) to "rejuvenate" downtown Brownsville.

(The old Coca Cola building is owned by former mayor Trey Mendez, who rents to the Cardenas. Mendez, shortly after he left office, got a $75,000 BCIC grant, but was turned down for $200,000 that he and his business partner Ramiro Gonzalez had applied for when Mendez was still mayor and Gonzalez was working for the city.)

"Anyer," by the way, stand for "Reyna" spelled backwards, the name of the second-hand store owner's wife.)

The city commissioners and the mayor of this RATA city will receive brand new electronic backed-up automobiles, courtesy of muskies. The new $250k price automobiles will not be equipped with a back-up battery. (somebody) hoping that the vehicles, with anti-theft proven systems will locked-in the drivers of the new cars.

Is somebody doing us a big favor??? If you get locked-in, in one of those new anti-theft proven automobiles and during these summer months, forget it, you will be cooked like a Kentucky broiled chicken... gracias muskies pero NO, not that guey.

CONCERN PROPERTY TAX PAYER CITIZEN (haven't paid the last 3 years yet).

hahahahaha!

Another type of agency is needed to take care of downtown: Tourist Police

They can walk the sidewalks, they can stand around shops, they can tell people to move along and not sleep downtown, not steal, etc

Downtown owners need to create this police force....if not anybody can take over their shop and claim to be the owners.

The whole city of Brownsville is in danger of facing this type of trespassing.

I’m not sure why they have to bring up this building in the blogs…and reference Commissioner cardenas…

Does he own the building?

fix the pot holes, flooding, traffic lights, white paint on all streets that need it. Los mojados de downtown can defend themselves, and we don't need no stinkin' parks they are always empty only at midnight they are full of viejas

That building is an eyesore for our downtown. It's hard to believe that years ago they tore down the beautiful Methodist Church building to build that ugly
glass building.

The parks need more active places for children.
I was thinking maybe the map of the world for kids to run, jump and learn.

Also, the planets for kids to play and jump.

Maybe a small design of the streets of downtown for kids to run, walk in the park.

On the ground for kids, not tall where people can hide.

It will be great for kids and parents.

The designs have to be safe for kids so that the parents can see them as they jump from country to country or from planet to planet and easy to clean for the employees.

My buddy says : Notice how many of these stories are about the same greedy a-holes : Pedro Cardenas, Trey Mendez , Zeke Silva, Rose Gowen, etc. ( the list is long). Its always diffferent stories and basically the same people. And they are supposed to be the ones serving their constituents NOT THEMSELVES. They always want more and more at tax payers expense. The city is not for you all to do as you please. Enough is enough!!

If blacks ran Brownsville, those cops would be fired for being racis'. Never let blacks run your city, state, or country.

We all know that politicians here in Brownsville are there only to enrich themselves and their friends. They don't give a damm about serving their constituents or taking care of priorities such as street maintenance and drainage. We only need to see how McAllen is always striking.
