The 31-year-old man accused of stealing an ambulance and driving it into Mexico is now in custody, according to the Brownsville Police Department.

Jesus Gilberto Hernandez, a Brownsville resident, was previously identified by police as the man who stole the ambulance on Aug. 4 at the 2000 block of International Boulevard.

Police at the time said the suspect had complained of abdominal pain and requested to be transported to the hospital. The suspect then "unexpectedly" jumped into the driver's seat of the ambulance and sped away from the scene and crossed into Matamoros, Mexico.

The ambulance was recovered by Mexican authorities that same day.

According to a news release, Hinojosa was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations by Mexican authorities at the McAllen/Hidalgo International Bridge on Wednesday, and then handed over to Brownsville police custody.

“The arrest of a South Texas man for stealing an ambulance represents HSI’s partnership with our foreign and domestic law enforcement partners,” Special Agent in Charge Craig Larrabee, HSI San Antonio said in a statement. “HSI thanks our law enforcement partners for working together to ensure this man was brought back to the United States to face justice. Together, we can keep our south Texas communities safe.”

Hernandez was arraigned on a charge of theft of property and had his bond set at $225,000.

Great reporting. Good job. Interesting too.

The time to think of doing this crime, then the practice to do it and finally taking the plan into action. Now, if people in Brownsville will do this to paint their homes, clean their clutter, put garbage cans outside, get rid of old tires etc....that will be something to really be proud of. If the City of Brownsville will also think of making Brownsville better and lower all bills NOT INCREASE them, that will make Brownsville unique.

Did they return the tires?

That boy must not have belonged to the cartels. Glad they got him, though.

I wonder if the Mexican cops dished-out some of the street justice that they are notorious for. 🥊
