While a majority of the board of the Brownsville Independent School District continue to focus on expensive non-academic expenditures – for example, spending in excess of of $6 million on artificial turf – parents of students at the Brownsville Learning Academy say the district's priorities are "all messed up."
"BISD has money for new turf at high schools, but doesn’t have money to build new schools or supplies for students," wrote one.
In fact, not only is it skimping on the learning materials, but the campus has visible signs of needs of upkeep and lack of attention to basic. We have been sent pictures of a portable classroom that caught on fire last school year 2016-2017 (May 2017) due to an electrical issue.
Parents report that it was not reported and that the fire department never showed up. The previous year the same, but fire department showed up that it made local news.
Learning materials and supplies are reported to be so limited that copies need to be made of books and pamphlets for students.
Additionally, the BLA has no No English as a Second Language teachers, or for English and Math but students are expected to pass state exams.
Under the academics section, the BLA states it will offer all required courses at both middle school and high school levels.
Students will be required to gain a specified number of credits each semester in order to remain at the Academy.

They are also receive course credit when the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills are mastered at a minimum of 70 percent and a student who has achieved grade level may choose to stay at the Academy or return to his/her home campus.
The board's majority recently voted to increase property taxes by 11 1/4 cents on every $100 of appraised value. It is apparent that an increasing number of district residents are growing dissatisfied with the priorities of the board and the district's administration.
And while the district keeps spending millions on non-essential, non-academic after-school activities like football, the programs that needs their help like the BLA continue to be treated like the BISD's step-children.

Do you expect these little things to be fixed? There is no kick-back to Coach Joe and the other Trustees. BISD is corrupt and poorly managed. Academics are lost in the fervor to spend tax dollars to contractors willing to grease the hands of those making the decisions. We are starting now to see attempts by the Superintendent to deflect attention from corruption and poor academics by offering money for touchdowns and this new "show" coming to the TSC events center. It is time BISD was audited and investigated.

The problem is that buildings, like the one in the picture are many in BISD. BISD has over crowded classrooms and lacks teachers in core areas (ESL is core----ENGLISH) because they compete with Jubilee Academy, Athlos, Harmony, IDEA and not only students are leaving the district, but also many teachers while the board and super are too busy finding ways to cover their tracks.
The Superintendent rearranged personal to fix maintenance and facilities department and made things worst.
Positions in construction management were given out to personal without experience and knowledge in construction field.
The chief electrician Jerry Martinez in the electric department sits on his ass all day eating pan Dulce. Whenever there's a electric call in a facility he needs a chofer to drive him around. Its time for retirement Jerry. Fernando Villarreal bullshits the administration that he has experience and knowledge in construction field. He has fuck up so many projects since he was hired. It is time BISD was audited and investigated.
For extra cash for students, students who report sleeping teachers in the classroom get a $1,000 reward plus a chance to win a new car.

BISD is like that guu that drives around town in that expensive car/truck /suv but lives in a trailer home on a dirt road.
BISD flaunts their stadiums and swimming center because that is what visitors see when they come to Brownsville to the competitions. They don't care about BLA or any other campus for that matter because they are out of sight hardly visited and not in the public eye. It's like when they bought the chevy suburbans to transport students to regional competitions because It Was cheaper than taking a bus for the 2 athletes that make it to regionals on a yearly basis. It's all about appearances. Those suburban sit at Sam's stadium all year to be used one weekend a year. Yetvthey have to change the oil every months buy new tires every year and pay a security guard to watch them. A pero se ve con madre cuando vamos a san antonio en suburbans instead of a bus. Unfortunately the issue is deep. BISD clerks protect and do not report abuse by their supervisors. Kent Whittmore for years was protected by his staff, Rosie Pena and her staff. BISD will never change has being and will always be corrupt. Just wait and see Becky Rendon will get jer $50million fine arts building on Morrison Road.
BISD and public school in general are corrupt beyond belief. Public funds are spent foolishly and education suffers. Inept teachers are protected by their union (NEA) and students are graduated with an education that is vastly inferior to students just a few generations ago.
We need the voucher system where students of low and moderate financial means can attend higher quality schools and enjoy good education that up to now has been restricted to the Rico larva. But the teachers union and school districts will fight the concept to the death, because they want ALL of the money, not just some of the money.
If public school had to compete with private schools for students, you would see a big change in the way public schools do business. A big change for the better.

What happened to the BISD employee health insurance? The board chickened out and voted to keep everything the same instead of increasing rates and deductibles. But, doesn’t this mean higher costs to BISD and for taxpayers who have to pay for BISD’s expenses? So now Salazar Insurance gets to make more money from there commissions. Is that why the board voted to raise property taxes? Will this shit ever end?
