IT'S PACHANGA TIME AGAIN AT THE VFW

By Juan Montoya

Following on the heels of Art McDonald's fundraiser earlier this month, the new VFW Hall on Veterans' Street (behind the Hygeia building on Price Rd.) was host to another candidate, this one vying for Cameron County Commissioner, Pct. 2.

Dr. Enrique Escobedo Jr., one of seven announced candidates for the position now held by John Wood, held his fundraiser there last week. Escobedo, currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Brownsville Independent School District, was on hand to greet and meet and press the flesh.
Many candidates for public office also showed up. Dolores Zarate worked one side of the hall, while her contender David Gonzalez worked the other.
Zarate worried that we would somehow be linked to a notorious blog with the initials ER and was fidgety about us taking her picture. Were it not for the reassurances of Julio Lozano, a former Brownsville Herald editor who now represents a tax-collection firm, we doubt Dolores would have consented.
On the other hand, Gonzalez wasn't so shy. He ran for state rep last time and perhaps that initial foray into politics taught him that you either want it or you don't. He did ask us to be kind, however. Oh, well.
As the Pct. 2 commissioner's race unfolds, we will probably see more of these shindigs more often. We know Louie Lucio, a stalwart at the VFW, will only be too happy to schedule one for you as the veterans attempt to generate funds to pay for this sumptuous palace. When the pachanga was over in the large hall, the attendees went next door to the canteen and downed a few before leaving for the night. Good luck to all the candidates.
