Remember when everyone from U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz, Cameron County Judge Gilbert Hinojosa and City of Brownsville and Port of Brownsville officials said pictures like that on the right would be a thing of the past if we would only go along with their rail relocation plans?
The city feel hook-line-and-sinker for the plan and agreed to transfer $875,000 in federal funds that had been allocated for the Sixth and Seventh Street overpasses in an earlier rail relocation plan.
The overpasses would have kept neighborhoods like La Muralla and the traffic from Amigoland Mall from being bottled up when trains came in from Mexico or went there south from Brownsville. City officials had been planning these structures for years.
Instead, they listened to Ortiz and Hinojosa and put all their eggs in the railroad relocation plan that would switch all rail lines west of the city to the county's new proposed international bridge by San Pedro, about eight miles west of the "Old" B&M Bridge.
If the city had not listened to their siren song, the overpasses on Sixth and Seventh streets would have already been built and scenes like this would have been a thing of the past.
Ortiz and other officials convinced then-Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta to transfer the funds and support the West Rail relocation plan.
Opponents like Hinojosa feared damaging traffic in the historic St. Charles Street area, one of the oldest neighborhoods in town. Hinojosa, by the way, owned a historic home in the neighborhood and opposed the overpass.
Supporters said the bridge would give access to the Amigoland Mall area and cited both safety and economic reasons. After twisting a few arms, Hinojosa had his way and the West Rail Relocation plan was born.
The proposal, which was spearheaded by the county, calls for tracks to continue southwest after passing the Expressway.
County and city officials and their counterparts in Matamoros proposed to move Union Pacific railway operations from Brownsville and Matamoros to west of the cities.
They proposed then to replace the rail portion of the B&M bridge with a new one about eight miles west of the city. Additionally, a West Loop would be developed within a corridor of railroad rights-of-way from the Amigoland Mall area to Olmito that Union Pacific would sell to the Texas Department of Transportation.
The rail relocation project eliminates the need for the Sixth and Seventh Street overpasses, Hinojosa argued then.
However, for drivers south of the railroad lines (specifically residents of La Muralla neighborhood), the relocation plan would make the overpasses unnecessary and drivers continue to wait for the trains — and any movement on the rail relocation plan.

The city feel?
the overpasses at 6th and 7th wouldn't help la muralla, unless they wanted to get to amigoland mall. now that the switch yard is gone, 10th st. is no longer blocked by trains. they can also access through bates st. off of sam perl. they don't need those overpasses. the relocation has removed the thru trains from crossing 511, charmaine, minnesota, robindale, price, boca chica, roosevelt, frontage (north and south), 6th, 7th, all the other downtown streets, palm, west jefferson, west elizabeth, west levee, w. st. charles, w. and st. francis. those crossings are now eliminated. the tracks still go over about half of those streets, but it's just a spur with an occasional engine and one or two cars attached. it's not like the old days when the 1 mile train used to cross town at 8am, noon and 5pm. the relocation has been, and will be a great thing...unless u live in san pedro. i don't, so i like it!!!!!!!!! the west rail project is also a good thing. i have relatives in la muralla and they like it too. it won't isolate neighborhoods anymore than they are isolated today. it will give them a hike and bike trail maintained and paid for by the rma, not the city. shit, the city can't even maintain the palo alto hike and bike trail...
Ortiz is up for re-election and Villalobos wants to run for that position.
What happened to all the money?
Was it put to good use?

Hey Mr. Zavallta, tell the Queen, the Music hall would have paid for over 2000 semesters of education and the mural, another 232 semesters. Thats 300+ full paid, 4 year scholarships that could have been given out. The numbers make it very clear. UTB is not about education, it's about adoration. And next election, it's going to be elimination.

They feel they can raise tuition because many students receive financial aid and can afford it.
What these free spenders forget is that these students will have to pay this money back at some point.
Everyone pays in the long run.
THIS IS SO PATHETIC AND SAD.
DON'T FORGET THAT MANY OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE TO TAKE REMEDIAL CLASSES WHICH CAN ADD A FEW MORE YEARS TO THEIR STUDIES MAKING JULIETA,ANTONIO Z. AND COMPANY RICHER.
PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop the Wst Loop!
Stop the West Loop Parkway!
Stop the West Loop Porkway!
All will be the death of neighborhoods from the flea market to Riverside, and doom the eight-mile railroad tracks from becoming a walking, nature and briding trail.
Preseve the earth!
Don't pave anymore of it!
If you must drive, leave early, be patient, carpool ....
