IN CASE OF COLD FRONT, SET FIRE TO BLANKETS

By Juan Montoya

In what can only be described as an attempt to score Brownie points with the masses, Cameron County’s Division of Emergency Management handed out scores of “blankets” to be distributed by local law enforcement to needy individuals.
On Friday, the day before the Big Blow struck South Texas, many sheriff and constables deputies were each given some of these blankets to stranded motorists should they come across someone needing to stay warm.
However, there was one slight problem.
The blankest were made of a material more appropriate for making Charro Days outfits. That is, the material is of coarse canvas more appropriate to fashion embroidered shirts worn by boys during the children’s parade.
“We wondered who was going to be able to stay warm with these,” said a deputy as he showed off the thin canvass blanket. “What are they supposed to do with it, light it on fire to stay warm?”
Last time we checked, no blankets had been handed out to stranded motorists. However, the county judge’s office told the local daily that it was handing some of the blankets to the cities of Brownsville and Port Isabel as well as to area shelters.
“We may not be able to provide a blanket to every single individual…But shelters that need 20 to 30 blankets, that we can do,” said County Judge Carlos Cascos.
We’re sure the county judge did not personally inspect the blankets (or sewn canvass), or he might not have been so forthcoming about their distribution. Instead, we suspect that Emergency Preparedness whiz-kid Johnny Cavazos though of the idea all by himself. So, if you think your child might need a Charro Days outfit for the parade, contact Cavazos or a nearby constable of sheriff department deputy for your material.

I wish someone would tell me, since when is it the responsibility for the county to provide people with blankets. What ever happen to personal responsibility, and what about all this non profit organizations, whom are always asking for hand outs.
In my days, you work and bought blankets, you work and saw the Doctor, you work and you ate, now everybody wants give me, give me. Oh I forgot, now they have the lone star card. More give aways.

When you are right, you are right. Esta cobija de hecha en china esta muy buena para que la costurera me haga una blusa y pantalon de manta al estilo "Tizoc". Me voy a parecer a Pedro Infante.
