WITH "FRIENDS" LIKE THESE...

By Juan Montoya
Both John Wood and Eddie Treviño vouch for their undying friendship.

And yet, as the Democratic primary approaches, we will undoubtedly see these "friends" and their supporters start to sharpen their knives and bare their claws as they attempt to get the nod from fellow Democrats to face mean old Carlos Cascos, the (dare we say it?) Republican.

Not too many people give Rebecca Gomez – the Grandma activist from Las Prietas – a fighting chance to make a runoff. But perhaps she might just force one. Remember, in a primary the winning candidate needs to get 50 percent of the vote plus one vote.

That said, let's see what these "friends" have in common.

They both received life, medical, and dental insurance and other benefits from the city contrary to the city charter. Neither, as far as we know, have paid the citizens back for these ill-gotten bennies.

Also, they both received a $300 monthly travel stipend from the city. Ditto to them not having repaid the city back either for that little windfall. That bennie, by the way, was instituted when Treviño was mayor.

Aside from that, Wood was also involved in the Cisneros time-sheet scandal where written evidence showed that Carlos Cisneros – his assistant and then-city commissioner – was getting paid by the county when he wasn't even in town. The time sheets were signed by Wood, his boss.

Cisneros, by the way, also reached into the city-benefits cookie jar and has not put any of the goodies back.

Treviño, in the waning days of his tenure as mayor, pushed though the $1 million Imagine Brownsville program that has resulted in local entities basically handing over the keys to the city's future (and treasury) to a cabal of bankers and moneychangers and their lackeys.

In this light, we might need a moral play where Cascos comes in on his donkey and drives the moneychangers form the temple.

However, he might have to leave Cris Valadez outside watering the donkey and make sure he doesn't rig the meter.

With friends like these...
