A BELATED RESPONSE AT OLIVEIRA

By Juan Montoya
After receiving numerous calls from concerned parents demanding to know the security situation at Oliveira Middle School, principal Alonzo Barbosa Jr. sent students home with a letter explaining the "incident."
We print the entire letter here in its entirety. You will notice that he does not even address the nature of the "incident," that is, the sexual attack by an older student on a mentally-impaired youngster in a school bathroom.

Feb. 03, 2010.
Dear Oliveira Parents:
By now, you are aware through local media that an incident involving students occurred at Oliveira Middle School last week. The confidentiality of juvenile information as well as as on-going criminal and administrative investigation strictly prohibits the disclosure of any information, However, all appropriate parents have been personally notified.
Many of you have contacted me regarding the safety of your children. I want to personally assure you that Oliveira Middle School students and employees are safe and secure. Regardless, the School District and the campus have taken additional safety precautions including more frequent patrols and walk throughs by District Security personnel. I have also assigned more campus personnel to supervise our buildings and grounds. Oliveira staff continues to be highly visible and available to students and we are more vigilant before school and after school as well.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns regarding student safety - Please understand that there are some things that I cannot discuss with you. You may reach me at (956) 548-8530 or (956) 698-1871. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Respectfully,
Alonso Barbosa Jr.
Principal

Reportedly, one of the security measures implemented in response to the attack was the closing of some of the bathrooms toward the rear of the school. Wouldn't all parents with students at the school qualify as "appropiate" parents to receive information about student safety?

As the article states, "All parents are the appropriate parties to receiving an insight as to what happened at Oliveira." If my child is there as a student, I most certainly want to know how and what the administrators will be doing to prevent this from happening to my child. I, of course, has sat my child down and have discussed the situation, the problems, the resources, and the actions they should take immediately, but I am still concerned as to why the actions are just going to be placed in force. Those actions should have been there from the beginning. What are the policies about allowing a special needs child to leave the room without an instructional aide? No wonder the Special Services Dept. has so many grievances against them and lawyer's fee outragiously climbing every day at BISD. Get Caty Preses-Garcia on this issue and maybe something will get done!
