DOES BUC REPRESENT RANK-AND-FILE UNION MEMBERS?

By Juan Montoya
In our last posting, we asked in the headline whether anyone really ( reeally) cared about who was endorsed by the union of the Brownsville Unions Coalition after their forum/debate held at the Brownsville VFW Hall last week.
We have been asked why we posed that question and have an answer (or question?). Do the votes by the union heads really represent the rank and file members?
This is why we ask.
In the last go-round of elections there was a run-off between Abelardo Gomez (the incumbent) and Pete Avila (the challenger) in the race for Cameron County Pct. 2.
After the debate/forum, the union heads got together and decided to back Abelardo, even though Avila had been a firefighter for more than 25 years (and also a union member). Avila, not known as someone who would take such a slight lying down, went into local firehouses hoses blasting and asked the boys (and girls) if they agreed with the vote cast by their representative at BUC.
To a man (and woman), they said no. So Avila gathered signatures from the majority of the firefighters in town and made political hay of the matter.
In the end, Avila ended up winning the run-off and is now completing his first year of the four-year term.
Would Abelardo have made a better constable? Who knows? The fact of the matter is that the membership of the firefighters' union supported Avila and not the candidate chosen by the BUC union bosses.

Excuse meee!!! why did you proposed such questions??? Unions aren't as united as they use to be, what candidates are doing now is targeting large families. Large families vote in blocks, and they are loyal, espcially here in South Texas. I would propose that next time buc take a survey than bring the candidates for a debate on the issues that affect the Association. And then ask the membership to support one candidate.

Whie you are speaking of Pete Avila, what Pct does he represent? Is Hortensia St in his Pct? Or does he have his office by Canalas? Everytime I go by there, his car is parked there and he is in the area. Could BUC check this out or maybe Mr. Abelardo?

... Democratic Cameron Country candiadtes' promises last night at the Valley Interfaith meeting in Brownsville held hope on stopping the West Loop Toll Road, Parkway, Porkway ...as well as improving much of the county's infrastructure .... And with night and the cold front nearing when the meeting ended, would the promises by obscured and blown away ...?

...and candidates, the faces you saw, the voices you heard, are connected with real people, not just a courted vote, a vote sought, and the voter then forgotten ....

Very good article Mr. Montoya, now if only everyone would read it and demand changes, we be okay. The sad truth is that there is apathy, and you speak and write untill your face is blue. But our uncaring locals refuse to make changes.

Anonymous, I understand and I have been voting for the last 10 years. Eddie Lucio is still in office, as is Sal Ortiz, as is Edna Tamayo, as is Commissioner Benavides who is clueless on issues.
Election, after election, they peddle the same old programs and people still have faith in them. Ofcourse, if the comments continue, the message will resonate. But lets be mindfull, there are still a lot of people that don't navigate the inter-net.
Edna Tamayo could sell snake oil in Los Indios and people would make her rich.
Then there is Aurora de La Garza and her nephew the Tax Assessor Collector, I swear, God only knows how this individuals get elected time, after time, over and over.
