BULLETIN:
Reuters, the Associated Press and other news services are reporting that the candidate for governor of Tamaulipas of the the Partido Revolucionario Institutional (PRI) which borders Texas and three other members of his entourage have been gunned down in the outskirts of Victoria, the state's capital.
Brownsville mayor Pat Ahumada Emailed his friends and contacts just after 12:30 p.m. Monday to pass along the news and his condolences to the families of the slain men. He said Rodolfo Torre was his personal friend and condemned the actions of those responsible for the act.
Torre reportedly was on his way to the airport in Ciudad Victoria when he was killed, Reuters reports. Four others were injured.
The news service said that Mexican drug cartels have launched a campaign of intimidation against some politicians running in local elections in a defiance of a federal crackdown. Notimex reported that the Army and police quickly cordoned off the area.
