DAN REYNA HOVERS BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH

By Juan Montoya
For three days after he suffered a massive stroke, former Brownsville Navigation District commissioner Daniel Reyna has been in a coma and hovers between life and death.
Dan, now 80, and a Korean War veteran, was the first Hispanic Tax Assessor-Collector for Willacy County and was also a special education teacher with the Brownsville Independent School District for the better part of 25 years.
No one can say exactly what brought on the stroke, but his wife Alicia said that as usual, Dan was puttering around the house these past few days hammering at this and hammering at that in the torrid heat.
"You can't really tell him what to do," she said. "Once he set his mind to it, that was it."
Dan is now in the intensive care unit at Brownsville Medical Center. A recent visitor said he is unresponsive and shows no sign of improvement in the three days he's been hospitalized.
His daughter Jessica said CAT scans indicate that there is no brain activity or any response from his brain stem.
"We leave it in the hands of God," said wife Alicia. "We appreciate everyone who has called and visited to inquire about his health. We can only hope for the best."
Dan, who just recently celebrated his 80th birthday with his family and friends, had recently returned from Houston where he celebrated his godmother's 100th birthday.
In the picture at right he is holding his pets, a dachshund and a blind cat at his home in Brownsville.
Dan is a frequent contributor to this blog and all of us here are hoping for the best and send our warmest regards to his wife and family.

Don't give up, Dan! You have always been a fighter. That Tamayo blood that flows through your veins and mine have kept us going for many years. My thoughts are with your family and my prayers are with you - La Prima

He's been only one of the Few True " MEXICAN - AMERICANS, HISPANICS, CHICANOS " to trully questioned the Dominant subculture here in S. Texas... He accepted that we as a community really own Nothing , we Had just been Brainwashed into thinking that We are " free and prosperous " in fact ; we just own insignificant little Taco and tortilla stands, and get loads of Food stamps as a mean to repress our emotions and feelings. It is just another form of Segregation, by keeping Us Fat, Lazy Quiet and Conformists... By Destroying our all ready self - Steem, OUR PRIDE and giving us a deeper Inferiority Complex !!!

I had the pleasure of sharing some time with Mr. Reyna these last couple of months after knowing hime for over 16 years. He was a great citizen of this country and a wonderful, loving family man. From speaking with him you could not tell he had already gone thru 8 decades. I admired how he was optimistic and was impressed by how much of a hard worker he still was, even more active than people more than half his age. I will miss Mr. Reyna very much, I wish the best for all his family. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Montoya, what is the latest status of Mr. Dan Reyna. I noticed that a contributor to your blog wished him to rest in peace. Is he still in the intensive care or have I missed something. Could you keep us abreast on his condition?

Dan continues to be in a coma as of Thursday(Aug. 12). The decision will be made on Friday on whether to discontinue his stay at ICU at Brownsville Medical Center and take him home to await further development. So far, he has remained unresponsive but his family members keep their hopes alive hoping for a miracle. Juan
