A few years ago, when the slicing up of Democrat districts in Texas was being Perrymandered in Austin, Sen. Eddie Lucio and his aides came to address the students at the University of Texas-Texas Southmost College hybrid.
With his trademark set of choppers in full display, Eddie answered questions after his and Paul Cowen's presentation on redistricting.
"Would you not rather run for Congress instead of being in a Legislature where you are outnumbered by Republicans?" he was asked.
"I have a personal relationship with Gov. Perry that I wouldn't have in Washington," the pearly whites glimmered back. "We were both representatives in the Texas House and we're god friends."
Something, obviously, has changed since then.
Ask Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos.
When Perry came down to Brownsville for the so-called Operation Lone Star where first responders and Texas National Guard personnel provided free health care to anyone who showed up at Juliet Garcia Middle School, his staff called Cascos, a fellow Republican, to be present at the event.
Unbeknownst to Carlos, Lucio also showed up, speech in hand, only to have Perry's staff call Cascos to the microphone to address the audience before Lucio.
Miffed at the apparent snub, Lucio was livid, but that didn't deter him from trying to push himself into every photo opportunity with his "friend" the governor.
Cascos' supporters say that the estrangement between Perry and Lucio extends to May 2003 when Perry named him Governor for a Day in return for a crucial vote on a bill Perry wanted passed. To Perry's surprise, Lucio took the Governor For a Day designation and promptly turned around and voted against Perry's bill.
At the time of the designation, Perry and the Lt. governor were out the state.
"Perry went down to the Legislature and confronted Eddie over his reneging on his word," they said.
From then on, they said, Perry has had no use for the state senator from Cameron County.
It probably didn't help Lucio's standing with Perry that he was named one of the Worst 10 Legislators four years later in 2007.
But the depth of Lucio's wrath was not apparent to local political observers until the arrival of the 90 soldiers from Iraq last Sunday when they were reunited with their families at the Jacob Brown Auditorium. Once again, Cascos was invited by the battalion's command staff to attend. And once again, he was asked to deliver a few words before Lucio.
After his brief remarks welcoming them home, Cascos was stunned to be accosted by Lucio and grabbed roughly by his arm - and by his verbal assault.
"That's the last time you do this to me," Lucio fumed angrily.
Cascos asked him what he was talking about and grabbed his arm in return before officers and non-commissioned officers from the battalion set Lucio straight.
"Lucio looked at him like he was insulted that Carlos grabbed his arm just like he had before," said an observer. "Lucio looked mad like 'Let go of my arm' even though he had just done the same thing."
"We invited the judge here," the event's coordinator told Lucio. "He didn't have anything to do with the program."
Cascos' supporters say that Lucio has made no secret of where he stands on the upcoming county judge's election this November.
"Eddie has sent E-mails to everyone asking them to attend Wood campaign events," said a Cascos supporter. "It's no secret he wants Wood to win very badly. He's getting involved in this one."

John Wood is so fortunate to have the support of our esteemed senator eddie lucio and our great former county judge gilbert hinojosa. This type of leadership is exactly what we need to go back to. As a loyal democrat I don't want people to think about candidates with vision. That is not important. What is important is that all democrats get elected. As a good, smart democrat, I acknowledge that John Wood has no vision, no balls and no financial sense, but that does not matter. He is a nice old man. He is a democrat and is entitled to be county judge. His ascension to royalty, via his JW coat of arms he displays should convey to all of us that he should be our leader in Cameron County.
El Sucio is extremely corrupt. If he stays political much longer, he's gonna go do some time. Federal Bureau of Prisons, get ready for el SUCIO!!!

Sucio, Hooters, Eel, Pan-cha et all,
la suerte de la Santa Muerte is running out.
See you all in H-ll.
I do not want to believe that our Senator is acutally coming down to that level. I did not see the confrontation, but I am relying on this source for the facts. I do hope that this is not just a political move because this will effect how I will view Sen. Lucio from now on. Regardless, I can assure you that Judge Cascos is a much more refined gentleman than to have enjoyed this fiasco in front of so many people, especially those that have just come back from defending and protecting our rights, one of which is voting and electing our governmental officials. Eddie, if you were truly involved in this fiasco, take the values that your Dad taught you and publicly apologize to Judge Cascos, but more so to our soldiers who came home to peace and quite. We hear so much about politicos that we don't know what to believe anymore, but wouldn't it be nice if we actually had a person who was a statesman and not a politician out to serve himself/herself? I am truly disappointed in Sen. Lucio, if this is true.
Thanks, for the article on Lucio, I am so sick of this guy. Maybe some letters to the local papers to begin exposing a este ratero. Thanks again.
Lucio is a pimp. His involvment in the Port of Brownsville bridge to nowhere fiasco and the Willacy County Jail construction debacle amongst others are examples of what this public servant is capable of. He speaks to his Christianity, has an altar in his home, yet he behaves like a bully on the playground. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he behaved in this manner. Somehow he believes he's the top dog and everyone should cow down to this buffoon. He continually takes credit for accomplishments that he had little to do with. If it weren't for the Lt Governor and Governor, we wouldn't get crap down here.
(Lucio is a pimp.)
If I was John Wood, I would tell el Sucio, in front of a TV camera, to stay the f__k away.

Seems like Eddie Lucio is acting more like Pat Ahumada each day. Lucio doesn't like change and seems to believe that State Senator trumps County Judge. Eddie Lucio is not the brightest bulb in the Valley and his ranking as one of the worst legislators supports his low wattage. What has Lucio done for us lately...NADA! Lucio is like a cartoon character and instead of a light-bulb above his head...there is only a question mark. The writing is on the wall....Eddie Lucio should be thinking about how he will earn a living when he gets off the public dole.
Anon When "he gets out of public dole," he might want to think how he might enjoy being in Feds little jail. He reminds me of a use car salesman. He will say anything just to get elected.
(Eddid Lucio should be thinking about how he will earn a living)
When the A-hole leaves office, if he doesn't end up in a federal prison, he will be set. What with what he's been allowed to get away with for all of these years. What will really freak me out is, some idiot will erect a statue or name a boulevard in his "honor".
josh.
Too late! The "honor" is already done.
At least when he uses email, you can't smell his putrid breath.
(you can't smell his putrid breath.)
It probably stinks of vodka and mole all combined. Yes, it would make me puke, to hell and back.
josh.
A prick, nothing more nothing less, and now his clone is in state politics as well, otro cabron ratero.
(otro cabron ratero)
Maybe some idiot will erect a Mt. Rushmore type edifice, in the Sucios honor, at Brownsville's Sewerage plant.
josh.
