We have just been apprised of some of the characters that would be players in the new administration that John Wood wants to bring into county government should he prevail in November.
Some are old, and some are new. But most of them have a distinct tie to the previous county administration of Gilbert Hinojosa.
In and around candidates' pachangas, there is a consensus that George Merril, of Harlingen, is Wood's choice f0r his chief of staff. Merril ran an unsuccessful campaign for Harlingen mayor this last go-round and has repeatedly told all within earshot that he would have won if Carlos Cascos had shown him his support.
Of course, Cascos is not cut from the same cloth as was Hinojosa who did not hesitate to introduce his influence in the politics of the county's municipalities if he saw some political gain to be had either in the present or in future political contests.
Another name that has surfaced is that of former Brownsville Navigation District commissioner and ad guru Evelon Dale as the county's grant writer. Dale is running Wood's media campaign and is responsible for the grainy photos of Wood which make him look like he's wearing an Afro.
And, making as reappearance as "Community Liaison" is none other than Silver Garcia, the mayor of the metropolis of Combes. You remember Silver, he held that position in the Hinojosa administration and earned a hefty salary compliments of the county taxpayers. What he did or what communities he "liaisoned" with was never disclosed. However, he still yearns for the good old days when Gilbert dispensed patronage and paid for it from county coffers.
Maggie Carranza, currently working in Wood's Precinct 2 office, reappears as Bro Wood's executive secretary. You remember Maggie. She was on the staff of Gil's Emergency Management Dept. and was recently prohibited from dispensing free notary public services at Cameron Park on Wood's behalf as she had been doing for the last seven years.
Another holdover form the Hinojosa era is former Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Hushen. Hushen is also a city commissioner from Harlingen who has thrown his weight behind wood in hopes he will snare the EMC position again.
And who can forget the affable (and overpaid) Remi Garza? You remember Remi. Before he left, Hinojosa tailored a position for him within the county administration, only to have Cascos abolish the post. He has been promised the county administrator position now held by Pete Sepulveda. Coming from a prominent San Benito family (his father, a doctor, and mother Yolanda, an attorney), Remi was soundly defeated by David Garza for commissioner of Precinct 3. As administrator, Remi could wreak havoc in Garza's road and bridge precinct.
And last, and least, we have Jarred Hockema, who was yet another assistant under Hinojosa and now clings to the Wood coattails for the position of assistant county administrator under Remi.
So there you have it. In Spanish, the applicable term would be that it's "La misma gata, solo revolcada."

CITIZENS OF BROWNSVILLE DO WE REALLY WANT WOOD'S "TAX & SPENDERS" ADMINISTRATION, WHO WILL "GREASE" THEIR OWN POCKETS ON OUR DIME, AND THE HELL WITH THE PEOPLE!!!!!!!! MY VOTE WILL GO FOR CASCOS. WE PAY TOO MUCH TAXES ALREADY. WOOD IS BAD FOR CAMERON COUNTY PERIOD!!!!!
Wood is not an Hinojosa puppet! No matter how much Cascos wants to make everyone believe this lie that he is spreading. Wood is a good honest man that will beat the short pint Cascos, so stop your lies girls. You all will lose!
Anonymous,
Good honest men, don't try to live off the government. They pay their taxes on time and don't try to blame others. They know where their slimy employees are and don't try to cover for them when they are caught at home and not at work. Good honest men don't try to misuse taxpayer resources for their own personal gain. Good honest men answer honestly when they are asked questions by the media. They do not always say "I don't know." Good honest men don't break city ordinances so that they can get health insurance at taxpayer expense. Good honest men would not vote to restructure the county for political reasons along with Gilberto Hinojosa. Good honest men don't try to sell public land under the table without the public having their input. Nice try, but we ALL KNOW that Wood is not much better than Hinojosa. But at least Hinojosa had a spine. Wood just does things because they are politically convenient and everyone knows this. Thats why you and your little cronies had to have a big political meeting to rally your troops because you know, as we all do, that Wood just doesn't excite the base and that Cascos has done a good job of managing this county in the midst of an economic crisis. How much more does this "good honest man" Wood have to promise to people or give away to people at taxpayer expense in order for him to be elected?
Yes, Wood is a good honest man--with no spine. He cannot stand up to ANY pressure, and walks away from ALL conflict. Sorry, but he is NO leader.
Before the kitchen cabinet takes office, Wood must win. That is a brain-knomer! If people want a man who walks around with women at his side showing his power - Dale and Benavidez - and acting as his body guard, we are in bad shape. He is a puppet and will do whatever someone tells him to do if it sound right. sorry but my vote, my friends' and my extended families' will be going for the real honest gentleman with integrity as his backbone. Go Carlos, we are behind you because you have been in front leading us in a professional manner. Woods old dishes are paper plates we have already discarded and those are not recyclable.
Mr. Cascos has proven his ability to serve well, period. This is the season of thick mudslinging against Conservatives and everyone wants to get in on it, whether they know what they are talking about or not.
Wood is a Hinojosa puppet and has never had a job in which leadership was a criteria. A victory for John Wood is a victory for Gilbert Hinojosa...Wood's mentor. Wood can't speak effectively, and doesn't seem to be able to make a decision....especially a tough one.
I've seen both of these candidates personally demonstrate that they are both more interested in the political implications of of their actions than in the well-being of our community. In most cases it's a matter of votes or donations.
However, Cascos is way-y-y-y-y better than Wood, which in this case is only posible by Viagraish infussion of political favors and donations.
BTW, I'll quit posting anonymously when the option is not available to anyone.
