Whether you were for the Zayas-Cortez-Powers ticket, or for the DefeatZayasCortezPowers PAC, or any of the other candidates for that matter, the voters in the Brownsville Independent School District election let everyone know in no uncertain terms that they wanted the ongoing charade to come to an end.
And did they ever.
Although the results are not official, it appeared certain late Tuesday night that Christina Saavedra, Enrique Escobedo and Luci Longoria had overcome their opponents in the race. Incumbents Rick Zayas and Ruben Cortez – running as a ticket – were trailing by more than 1,000 votes each as the clock approached the midnight hour.
This much was clear. In Place 1, Saavedra beat out Otis Powers, Danny Pena and Eric Garza amassing 6,179 votes to Powers' 4,056, Pena's 2,700 and Garza's 3,298.
Escobedo overcame Cortez's disparaging political campaign by soundly defeating the incumbent 8,511 to 7,143. Voters were apparently more impressed by Escobedo's prior performance as trustee and board chairman and his master's degree in chemistry and biology than with Cortez's high school diploma.
But if ever there was an upset Tuesday it was the sound trashing Longoria handed Rick Zayas in Place 4 with 8,916 votes to 7,144. Zayas and Cortez, apparent frontrunners at the start of the campaign, were targeted by the PAC on a number of substantive issues and they spent their time defending themselves from charged they had used their public offices to look out for the interests of friends and associates instead of for the children and residents of the district.
"They beat them like they caught them stealing chickens," said an observer at the district offices as the results came in.
Even as it became apparent that the voters had come out in force to oust the two incumbents and reject the Powers comeback, some were saying ti was a "PAC victory," a notion discounted by many.
"The PAC is made up of only a few people," scoffed a member. "The people spoke and they spoke loudly. They want this district to get back to educating children and away from politics and power grabbing. "
Likewise, the results indicated that voters in the district were not going to be swayed by slick advertising gimmicks concocted in the fertile mind of Jeffrey Millar, a self-styled advertising guru. Facing him across the public relations divide were the candidates who designed the advertising themselves, and up-and-coming consultant Rodrigo Moreno, who has a string of impressive victories under his belt.
"If anything, Millar's tactics of harping on the personal foibles of his opponents backfired," Moreno opined as the results trickled in. "People want to move forward and get us back to where the district was before this majority took over."
Millar tried to smear the PAC candidates and link them to past BISD scandals and to an insurance company sued by the district over alleged overcharges. Toward the end, he pulled out all the stops and used imagined slights upon the family members of Zayas and Cortez to try to curry sympathy from the voters.
"That was a despicable thing to do," said an observer at the BISD board room. "How can you drag your family into a political contest? The voters thought that was a bit too much. When Zayas tried to link Longoria to the insurance company even though she had nothing to do with them, it backfired on them."
The role of Carlos Quintanilla and Accion America also played a critical role in the BISD race. Quintanilla was invited to Brownsville by the parents of Special Needs students after they felt that a majority of the board members were not receptive to their needs.
Zayas and Cortez and a local blogger attempted to discredit Quintanilla and Accion America labeling him a convicted felon and the group "outside agitators." However, the electorate apparently decided that an offense that had occurred decades ago did not matter and that the good works by both Quintanilla since and the grassroots community action group outweighed the negative claims by Zayas and Cortez.
As a patron left Cobbleheads bar where some PAC members were celebrating the victory, he said perhaps what was on the minds of the voters when they walked into the voting booths on Tuesday.
"When I go to Austin, I am always asked what happened to the district," he said. "We were doing so well by winning the Broad Award and getting those $2 million in scholarships for our students. Then these guys come in and get rid of the superintendent and start promoting their friends to good-paying jobs. If the results of this election means that we are returning to that road, I'm all for it."

Let's hope BISD is ours....not just another group of "theirs" who deal in special interest. Its time to focus on education of the kids....not just being a very large day-care center. We will see. In the past the people have changed, but the problems have continued. We can be optimistic, but the track record of BISD Trustees is not very good. Having "educators" as trustees has not meant positive change in th past....just same old same old.
As has been said many times Mr. Gonzales had nothing to do with BISD winning the Broad award. It was not even for the period of the time that he was Supt or interim. Getting rid of him was the best thing that was ever done.
I would like to thank the wonderful people of Brownsville, it's Teachers, Staff and to the Voters who overwhelming voted for the future of the Children of Brownsville and BISD.
I have been blessed to have come to a wonderful city, with many wonderful people, I had faith in Brownsville and Brownsville had faith in us.
Now it is time to get Back To Broad, it's up to everyone. You did it for the Children and you did it for Brownsville...
Peace be with you.

SI SE PUDO, SI SE PUDO, SI SE PUDO.
Never underestimate The Power of the People. The VOTERS have spoken. The message is LOUD and CLEAR. Above all, never underestimate older, and according to another local blogger, "down right stupid, liars, uneducated," women. Because when you mess with wise grandmothers, you don't stand a chance...Do I need to say more?...CONGRATS. TO ALL 3 ELECTED (how sweet it sounds) BOARD MEMBERS
Thanks to all of the PEOPLE who voted for CHRISTINA, ENRIQUE, and LUCY. We are on the road to recovery.
Gracias a todas las personas que votaron por CRISTINA, ENRIQUE Y LUCY. Estamos en vias de recuperaciĆ³n.
That is a great illustration used to identify with the turnout. The voters practically overthrew the ruling party.
Next, we need to reform UTB. The leadership should focus on the improvement of the students' success. The students need to be taught, retained and prepared. Not surrounded by new buildings and luxurious furniture, expensive flooring and meaningless waterfalls.
(Next, we need to remorm UTB.)
See Dr. Mchale for that one. Not that J. Montoya won't be there to more than assist.
Jake.
What with Zaya's Mother tell Mr. Saavedra that he could not place sign in front of Stell Middle School, because that was Zayas and Cortez
area and no body could place a sign there.
At last this fiasco is over! Now is the time for all good board members to come to the aid of their school district. (Remember that line?) Congratulations to all the newly elected or reelected members. We are expecting great things from you, especially the congeniality between each other. It is alright to disagree but please do that behind closed doors. Do not hang your dirty laundry out to dry in KBSD for all to see. Be ethical and professional in all you do, especially on how you address each other. I am confident that all 7 will be able to work together and support Mr. Springston so that he can get back on track working for the good of our children. Way to go Luci, Enrique and Christy! Caty, Minerva, Rolando and Joe, get back on track and make us proud again!
Hopefully the wall of corruption has been torn down by our new ellected officials. Congrats to everyone that made this happen.
JUST IGNORE DEMONIO MARICAS AND MAYBE HE WILL GO AWAY FOR GOOD. NO ONE WANTS HIM HERE. PLEASE/PLEASE GO AWAY FROM WHERE YOU CAME FROM.
Maclovio says; "Uuuuuuuyyyyyyyy!"
The people of Brownsville have spoken. As an educator at Rivera High School, I can feel that change is coming, it is time to voice our concerns to the board, and not be retaliated against. We were not allowed to make reports for risks of losing our jobs. Please listen when we bring an issue for discussion. Thanks
Thank you for voting, City Commission is next.
Get them all OUT THE THE CITY and start fresh.
To the Rivera educator: Please think this out. If all of us start running to the board members with all our nit-picking concerns, we will continue what was already going on. We must remember to follow the chain of command starting at the campus level. I have a feeling that our administrators will no be able to work more comfortably, once Mr. Springston get total support from the board. Give the administrators a chance to make a difference. The fear-factor is now gone and we all need to work together in a positive and professional manner. If for some reason, the various levels in the chain of command refuse to cooperate and solve the problem at home, than and only then should we consider the next level. Let us not forget that we are professionals and should act as such if we want to be treated as such! It will be wise for the board members to also refrain from taking sides publicly before they study the whole situation behind close doors. You owe no favors; you owe us nothing that will not profit the education of our children. And, don't go looking for the bee hive, board members.
I can not believe that a refined lady such as Rick's mother would stoop so low as to get involved in the incident described above. But I guess the poor lady did have to stand up for Zayas! He is her angel son! We all know that a Mother will never see what her child has done wrong. Or, at least, not admit it.
The Rivera High School principal's tactics can be used as a case study in favoritism and discrimination in the public school setting.
Four women in the board? Do you think this is a good idea? We will see. I expect the meetings to be extremely caty until the next elections.
You call it "nit-picking concerns"? you must be either the principal, or one of his favorites.
How dare you talk about following the chain of command, when (I'm sure you know this) our principal refuses to even allow us to make a report, unles you are one of his FAVORITES.
Please....be real.
Hey do you all think Caty will get re-elected again in two years?
It will not be estremely Caty because it will not be necessary. All the board members will be working together as a team, so it will not be necessary for Caty to continue to try to defend herself for every word she uttered.
you thought you would not get caught again on november 4, 2010 thursday you were arrested once again for the 4th time with a DUI. you should not be driving afther your 3rd DUI. you critize people on your blog when your a danger to our community. would the PAC be there for you, like you were there for them. call katy call pat and the rest of the PAC. you will see if they are your friends. i don't hide anything my name is kimberly " Hope the PAC helps you out or when your in the slammer.
