Just when we'd thought we'd heard the last of miscreant blogger Robert Wightman, he surprised us (unpleasantly, it would appear).
After we ran an article on the reluctance of commissioner Melissa Zamora to believe that Fly Frontera and its industry-leading regional airline operation wanted to make Brownsville the hub of its north Mexican regional plans, the nuts started coming out of the woodwork.
One comment in particular caught out eye so we looked closer into it.
We have confirmed now that local blogger Wightman has been posing as a Brownsville "reporter" and contacted president Jim Gallagher, president of Public Charters that is planning to start offering competitive airline service primarily between Tampico, Tamaulipas, and Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Brownsville by June 1 out of the Brownsville-South Padre Island international Airport.
Reports indicate that Wightman claimed to be representing Zamora and mayoral candidate Tony Martinez, and warning Gallagher that he would "expose" him and his company for alleged associations with felons, child molesters, etc.
Additionally, the blogger also warned the firm's president that Martinez (once he got in office) would act to terminate the economic incentives that are currently being negotiated between the firm and the city and economic development entities.
Apparently, Gallagher was flabbergasted by Wightman's threats to "expose" his efforts and his company to bring jobs and new vigor to the city's efforts to establish a viable aviation industry here. (That's Wightman in the picture above with his witness, local attorney Rick Zayas, discussing strategy in his ongoing case against the Brownsville Herald.)
Today's Brownsville Herald indicated that Gallagher was interested in setting up shop in Brownsville by Accion America president Carlos Quintanilla (a persistent sort) after the community activist saw the opportunity to bring the company to Brownsville and take advantage of the capital flight by violence-weary businessmen in northern Mexico. With the public roads becoming shooting galleries and under the control of drug cartels, what better way to provide a safe fast method of travel to entrepreneurs from cities such as Tampico and Monterrey?
The idea seems to have appealed to the Mexican customers and Fly Frontera spokespersons say the response from them has been short of phenomenal.
"There are people who want to pre-purchase tickets on a daily basis because they find it necessary to travel between those cities and Brownsville to tend to their investments and homes here," said one. "It would be a shame for all these efforts to be derailed because some fool off his medications decided to take it upon himself to interfere with a legitimate, professional business transaction."
Gallagher says Public Charters is negotiating with the city to get a wants a minimum revenue guarantee capped at $2 million over two years, the same amount the city agreed to in order to land American Eagle. In return, Fly Frontera would set up shop and start with a $5 million investment in equipment and employment.
So far, every inquiry into the bona fides of the company have turned out positive. With the introduction of the Wightman factor, it will be interesting to see whether local elected and economic development officials will turn down a firm that has already received inquiries from Harlingen and McAllen airports who want them to go there.
In any case, it would seem to us that the best that Zamora and Martinez could do so as not to have the blogger (asserting he represents them) derail the project, would be to make it explicitly clear to Gallagher and everyone else that he does not.

If Tony Martinez and Melissa Zamora do not repudiate this nutcase and Fly Frontera goes elsewhere shame on them. This kind of behavior can only come from what is in it for me politicians.
Those politicians need to stay out of this.
Saddle up the horses, because tonight we ride
I cannot believe that asses are governing us. How can ANYONE not want this deal. If MZ does not clear the air on this and we lose this deal, it will be tragic for Brownsville at this critical time. Remember Southwest wanting to come here, anyone?
The damage is done, anyway. God help us from these dumb asses.
La jaiba, la jaiba, la jaiba. Great example of how locals will destroy progressive growth....just to destroy things. This is why Brownsville, the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley is so backward and new businesses don't want to come here. The lack of leadership here, and the desire to fight change and progress makes this community like quick sand for development and progress. Since so many folks here want to be part of Mexico...why doesn't the U.S. and Texas consider de-annexing Cameron County to Mexico. Pat Ahumada then could fulfill his dream of being mayor of Matamoros.
Bobby just posted on his nutcase blog a tirade against Quintanilla, why the fuck didn't Bobby take the initiative or the leadership to do this. Its the same old bullshit from the same old bullshitter. Message to Bobby and all of your old dinosaurs, we are tired of your shit. Move on you are certainly not wanted in Brownsville. City of Brownsville, lets get it done.
Dirty, underhanded politics at it's worse. Did "El Bobe" Wightman ever state what he or they wanted to cease their "exposure" threats?
What Brownsville needs to put on this loser is a permanent gag order and let him know he is persona unwanted in Brownsville.
www.flyfrontera.com Brownsville welcomes you. We are going to fly to Mexico.
BWC Cervantes admits to being a junkie morphine no wonder he is a fucking nutcase. We hear that BV Herald has got an order against The Brownsville Voice and that is why he is closing down, shut down or pay up.

WHILE YOU ALL FIGHT FOR CRUMS!
Guess who gets the real Money?
Juan thank you for bringing this out to the public we here in Brownsville have a history of bad decisions about our future. We have the Port of Brownsville, yet we get no revenues they go elsewhere. We lost Southwest Airlines. Major companies do not want to engage in Brownsville because of the copadre system and who loses we do. My question is why all the stink about Mr. Quintanilla he has done what no other politician has been able to do bring in a jet service to fly to Monterrey and tampico, we need that Mexico needs that and at the end who cares what this guy did 5 10 or 25 years ago, it is about what he is doing now and that is creating something great for Brownsville. Mr. Gallagher you are welcomed in Brownsville.
This kind of thing illustrates why Brownsville continues to swirl down the proverbial toilet in South Texas. Let's face it, Brownsville is a welfare city and the only progress they will accept is progress that is free....but the locals who contribute nothing, want to be in control of everything. As indicated above, "la jaiba, la jaiba...."
