AHUMADA OPENS THE FLY FRONTERA DEBATE TO THE PUBLIC

By Juan Montoya

Frustrated that the proposal to establish a regional airline with Brownsville as its hub and Tampico and Monterrey as the main spokes had been monopolized by a vocal minority, Mayor Pat Ahumada has called for a town hall meeting open to the public.

Ahumada made the announcement during a press conference Friday. It is scheduled for f 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Amigoland Event Center, 1010 Mexico Blvd, Section 3.

Ahumada called on members of the business community, taxi drivers, and "anyone who supports or opposes passenger service to Mexico, or this particular company."

On April 5, the commissioners voted to delay their vote for 25 days a vote on whether to sign a contract with Charter Air Transport and Public Charters Inc., the firms behind Fly Frontera. The onslaught against the airline was led by a group of local bloggers who insinuated that the Fly Frontera deal was somehow rigged. Ahumada said they had bad-mouthed the Fly Frontera deal without being fully informed.

“However well intentioned they may be, they are dictating the future of Brownsville in a very irresponsible way, in my opinion,” Ahumada said during his press conference.

Critics had questioned the "rush" with which the Fly Frontera proposal had been handled by the airport, the city and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation. They said that – while they didn't have any specific proof of wrongdoing – they suspected something "fishy" had occurred.

Fly Frontera president Jim Gallagher attended the April 5 meeting and while he didn't address the commissoners then, provided a chronology of the company's proposal through the city's vetting process.

"Everything was done above board," he said outside the commission chambers. "This didn't happen overnight. But it is futile to argue against a dedicated group of conspiracy buffs. Their minds were made up and nothing was going to change their viewpoints."

Instead, he said, he will provide the public facts that will counter the unsubstantiated allegations against him, his representatives, and his company. "This is how we got to this point," he said. "We started the formal process in front of a public board composed of local citizens. We didn't sneak in through any back door. If people will take the time to read their boards' minutes, they will see that we have been above board at every turn. We feel this is a win-win situation for everyone involved and provide a critically-needed service that will also provide an infusion of capital and visitors to Brownsville."

He said that the recent events in northern Mexico such as the discover of mass graves with victims that had been pulled from cars and buses traveling on highways between Tampico and Matamoros pointed to the critical need for an alternative method of transportation.

"Many businesses with employees in Brownsville and Matamoros need a safe, secure method of transportation," said Gallagher. "We will gladly show the public their letters of support and enthusiasm for our proposal."

Gallagher said Fly Frontera initial appearance was before the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport Advisory Board to discuss the service options to Monterrey and Tampico. "The members of the board, after considering our financial analysis, determined that the best way to gain the most advantages in fuel savings and operating costs to provide a low-cost ticket was to recommend that our company, Public Charters Inc., provide the service with an aircraft that met the specifications of the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation," he emailed a response to questions from Rrun-Rrun.

"That was the EMB-20 "Brasilia" aircraft with 30 seats," he said. "On March 15, we brought that aircraft and provided an introductory flight to 23 passengers including board members and some city commission members," Gallagher added.

"That evening, the commissioners voted 6-1 for the airport board to seek funding for the project."

Gallagher said that on March 24, The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) voted unanimously to provide 50 percent of the incentives being requested to launch the project. Then, on April 4, the airport advisory board voted unanimously to recommend the project to the city commission for the other 50 percent.

Then, at the meeting Tuesday, the commissioners voted to undertake a comprehensive examination before a final vote.

"We have carefully followed every step and complied with every guideline in presenting our proposal before your city representatives," Gallagher wrote. "We welcome the opportunity to explain our proposal before a fair and open-minded citizenry."

Mr. Gallagher may or may not be aware the CORRUPTION and DISTRUST we the people have with our leadership, GBIC AND ANYTHING THAT OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS IS SPENT ON.
It's the same principal that applies with when a spouse has an affair and the other spouse finds out the TRUST FACTOR IS LOST FOREVER!!!!!
Our leadership has made no effort to regain our TRUST BACK, this is the reason why we're so distrustful !!!!!!!!!!

Will all those people running for office be there too? I'd like to see what THEY have to say about this.

Delaying the decision and calling a "town hall meeting" seems to reflect that the city commission really didn't do their homework on this deal. Why didn't they have a public meeting before??? And, according to the article in the Herald, Ahumada blames the delay on a vocal group of "bloggers". That's a real cop-out by Ahumada. Perhaps if the city commission had explained the issue and presented information earlier, this issue could move forward. Ahumada's ego won't let him admit this, so he points fingers at the "bloggers". Just another failure by Ahumada and other commissioners to do their due diligence...but they refuse to admit that and so try to put the blame for the delay on "bloggers". What crap!

Ahumada loves to "open his fly".

What is all this fuss about "Tax Payer Dollars," If people want services, they have to pay for them, stop complaining already!

It's all the Bloggers fault for this issue not going through.

The purpose of this town hall meeting is to explain and inform some hard-headed people, who will never be satisfied, that there is no hidden agenda that exists between the city and Fly Frontera.

These "bloggers" on face book and other sites, are not fully informed about whats going on, most of them tend to follow others just to follow, and believe everything they hear instead of making their own decissions about what is true and what is not.

Those running for city commission and mayor should stand up and state their position on this. Most are hunkering down to let Ahumada take the heat.

the mayor isn't the only member of the Commission from what we hear they were extensively brief not once but twice, it was presented to the Airport Advisory Board, to the Brownsville Economic development Council, to the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corp. and then presented to the City Commission for approval, does not sound like a rushed job to me.

or take the credit for a good job of showing leadership and bring to Brownsville direct air service to Mexico.

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW:

--WHERE ARE ALL THE FLY FRONTERA FRIENDS?
--WHERE IS CAMARILLO AND RIGO MORENO?
--WHERE IS TONY MARTINEZ AND ERNIE HERNANDEZ?
--WHERE ARE GIBIC BOARD MEMBERS?
--WHERE ARE BECD MEMBERS?
--WHERE ARE ALL THE 23 PASSENGERS INCLUDING BOARD MEMBERS AND SOME CITY COMMISSION MEMBERS?
--WHERE ARE FLY FRONTERA FRIENDS AND ANY ONE THAT DEFENDS
IF THIS IS A SCAM OR A REAL DEAL?

This is only a good deal if it's made with reliable, trustworthy folks. Carlos Quintanilla scares me. Why would any business allow a convicted racketeer with multiple judgements against him and current lawsuits speak for them? Brownsville can't afford to take the hit. Why don't we just pass on this apparent scam?

Blaming the bloggers is a cop-out for the commission and city manager not doing their homework on the airlines issue. If the city gives in to anonymous bloggers (regardless of whether they are informed about the issue) is a way to focus blame and deny that they, the city manager and city commission, didn't bother to educate themselves on the issue and the people involved. So, they point the finger at bloggers.

Someone needs to ask if anyone has looked into luring Volaris, Vivaerobus, or Interjet to the airport. These low cost Mexican carriers are already running and established. Seems like it would involve a lot less risk to me! Instead, we are offering millions to some so and so to see if he can make a small airline work with prop planes. Typical Brownsville leadership! Someone start asking this question!!! www.volaris.com.mx, www.vivaerobus.com, www.interjet.com.mx. These airlines all use real jets. Two of the three already fly into the U.S.

No one complained when Quintanilla launched a national effort against Cheese Heroin that saved thousands of kids and informed million of young adults about the dangers of this cheap inexpensive killer drug. When the Drug Czar and over 150 members representing Hospitals, care centers, law enforcement, schoool districts and drug treatment center from throughout Texas joined Quintanilla Anti Cheese Heroin Task Force, no one complained or mentioned his felony conviction. They surely did not mention it when he appeared on Nightline, Good Morning America, Fox News with Sean hannity and the Christina show on Univision. Just asked sergio Chapa from Valley Central News he saw it first hand.

Ahumada initially used the word debate. Then he changed it to "Town Forum." It will end up being just a campaign rally with organized "spontaneous" support for the Fly Frontera deal.
