AS THE LIMAS SHIP SINKS, MARTINEZ SCURRIES AWAY

By Juan Montoya

Now that former 404th State District Judge Abel C. Limas has pleaded guilty to racketeering in federal court, the move by local lawyers to disassociate themselves from the disgraced barrister has reached stampede proportions. Lawyers who in the past would boast of having a little bit of "palanca" with Limas are now scurrying like rats to make themselves scarce in any discussion involving Abel.
Like Cameron County District Clerk Aurora De la Garza, who used the good offices of the now-disgraced judge to hurry through her son Joey after he was caught stealing thousands from the hospice in Olmito where he was hired as a fund raising director. Or ask attorney Eddie Lucio (again, not our sucios), who was able to get Limas to agree to give his client. convicted murderer Amit Livingston, a 60-day reprieve before he was sent to the Big House so he could get his affairs in order. Livingston high-yailed it and is now on the lam, Obviously, if you had an inside relationship in Limas's court, it stands to reason that you'd want him to stay on the bench. We seem to remember that back in January of 2008, when Limas was locked in a death struggle with Elia Cornejo-Lopez, there were several fundraisers held by his friends to re-elect him to the 404th. We dug through our files and bingo!, we found it. It is a rather drab invitation to join a local law firm in honoring Abel and coaxing a few dollars for his campaign. It reads quite simply: Campaign Fundraiser for: JudgeAbel C. Limas 404th District Court Hosted by:Martinez, Barrera y Martinez L.L.P Thursday January 17,2008 6:30-8:30pm Holiday Inn Brownsville (Formally Sheraton Four Points) 3777 North Expressway Brownsville, TX 78520 RSVP: Liza DimasPhone: (956) 543-7734 Email: lizadimas7@yahoo.com Now, the Martinez in reference in the invitation is none other than Tony Martinez who is currently running to be the next mayor of the City of Brownsville. We're sure Tony won't be happy when people remember that he did his utmost to keep Limas in office. And we're also sure that he had nothing to do with the illegal activities that the 17-page indictment lists against the former judge. But it's still enlightening to see that Limas was bale to generate enormous goodwill among some local law firms, Martinez's included. Will Tony join the rest of the pack and flee the Limas ship?

Not all lawyers are created equal. I have met some very decent lawyers that are doing great work defending the innocent and the poor. A few bad apples give everybody a bad name. Unfortunately the good ones get no recognition ever. They are not rich, they are not popular and they are quietly doing their job.

THEN YOU GOOD LAWYERS BETTER SPEAK UP AND RAT OUT THE CORRUPT ONES CAUSE WE THE PEOPLE ARE ASSUMING YOU ALL ARE CORRUPT. WE DON'T KNOW WHO TO TRUST ANYMORE. USE THE LAWS TO YOUR FAVOR, WHO BETTER KNOWS HOW TO DO IT THAT YOU GUYS. GOOD MUST PREVAIL OVER EVIL.

What does Bobby Wightman Cervantes have to say about his darling Tony Martinez and his convict friend Abe Limas. Double standard dead silence.

We do speak up. We also encourage our clients to speak up, and to hold us accountable to them. We tell our clients up front that we do not engage in unethical or corrupt conduct, and we don't tolerate it from them. However, we don't always run with the same crowd that these other lawyers do, and we don't necessarily know what they are up to. It's not like they come and tell us these things. We hope, though, that you don't just assume all lawyers are corrupt. We are not. And we don't assume YOU are corrupt.

Actually, lawyers are not really the problem. Ignorance and apethy are. Inform yourself of the candidates, of the issues, and of the problems--and don't just walk away from the hard decisions. As was once said, "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". Seems to me the real problem is that "good" people are still doing nothing or not enough to make sure the crooks are removed from office or from any profession they practice.

Peter Zavaletta was right. I voted for him. don't blame me

Unfortunately, the "some good" lawyers seem to have no moral courage to try to make the judicial system better. An attorney who accepts the existing system and does nothing, is just as bad as those corrupting the system. It seems that the "some good" attorneys (as stated above), especially those that defend the scum of the earth defendents benefit from the corrupt system. And, we must remember, the District Attorney, Armando Villalobos did not object the the ruling giving Livingston the opportunity to run from that murder charge. There seems to be the potential for a connection there.

Who gives a rat's ass what BWC thinks about anything.

To the person who speaks of moral courage. I don't know what lawyers you have dealt with, but I know you have never been to my office. We don't accept the existing system. We don't benefit from it either. In fact, most times we are openly "home towned" (even in our own home town) for not playing the game. And we tell potential clients "NO" when they ask if the judge or the prosecutor does special favors for us (this means we lose business). We do vote, campaign against those we believe are corrupt, incompetent or lacking in what you call moral courage, and we sleep well at night. We openly share our experiences so others like us will tell their friends what happens in real life. What we don't do is hold out hope that permanently apathetic folks will step up to the plate and do anything close to what we do. So, what have you done lately to show your moral courage?

Anon we agree with you who gives a shit about what BWC says.

WHY do we only read about Martinez and Camarillo in the paper & blogs? What about the other candidates? And are all running for mayor Democrats?

Thugs like Gilbert Hinojosa, Luis Saenz, Ernie hernandez, Craig Grove, Chris Davis, and Melissa Zamora are forcibly trying to put Zeke Silva into office when they know Zeke is not a viable candidate. Luis Saenz himself prosecuted Zeke and now is taking Zeke's crooked money to get opinions that are illegal. Stupi Zeke, keep hoping and dreaming and giving your money away. What a pendejo!
