A BAD MORNING FOR RICK ZAYAS: JAIL AND OUT

By Juan Montoya

What a way to start off the week!
Reports from various sources indicate that local attorney and former Brownsville Independent School District trustee Rick Zayas got off on the wrong side of a Brownsville policeman as he drove his son to school this morning and ended up on jail.
A cursory glance at the police report indicates that an officer had stopped two cars on the 3500 block of Boca Chica during rush hour traffic and was getting their drivers licenses when he noticed a black SUV straddling the left turn lane and the lane of oncoming traffic.

The officer said he signalled the driver to sop and when he didn't, he ran over and tapped on the passenger's side window as the SUV sped by.
The driver still failed to stop and the officer ran after the SUV and tapped on the driver's side window.
Instead of stopping, the driver sped away against traffic in the opposing lane with the officer running after him.
The report states that the driver chased the speeding SUV for at least "100 feet" before the vehicle stopped.
When he asked him for his driver's license, he found out it was Zayas and asked him why he didn't stop when he tapped on the passenger's side and the driver's side window.

"I screwed up," Zayas is reported to have told the officer.
The upshot of it was that Zayas was charged and booked at the municipal jail on one count of reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and one count of evading arrest with a motor vehicle, a felony.
Since his son was in the car all this time, it is possible that a charge of endangerment of a child could be filed later.
When backup arrived, Zayas was allowed to have his wife pick up their son and take him to school. Rick was then taken to the Brownsville Municipal Jail and booked and mugged.

Municipal Judge Phil Bellamy released Zayas on a personal recognizance bond until his trial date.
Now, Rick being an attorney of some note, we're sure he's not going to take this lying down. We've had our differences with him an his partner Ruben Cortez in the past, but being arrested and hauled off in a cop car with your son watching is not something that we would wish on anyone.
What a way to start a Monday.

"Monday monday (Ba-da ba-da-da-da)
So good to me (Ba-da ba-da-da-da)
Monday monrnin, it was all I hoped it would be......"

Feel sorry for his kid

He needs to be taught that he is not above the law and most of all needs to be a role model to his baby boy. Everyone else had to stop for traffic, but not the high and mighty Rick! He really did screw up - AGAIN.

Possible child endangerment? You bet he should be charged! And please don't allow his Mommy and his Daddy to do what Joey's Mommy did for him when he took all that money from the terminally ill! Justice in Brownsville is a big joke. Pobre del pobre!

Here in Brownsville, Texas, NOBODY is above the law, judges, lawyers mayours, commissioners, or ex-BISD board members.

Well, maybe Cameron County Chief Deputy Gus Reyna is above the law, but just a little bit.

Interesting how Bobby Wightman (he of the 'alternative' lifestyle blog shall we say) says today he has 'nothing' to write about . . . .

And the elegy of 'Bobby and Ricky' continues . . .

THIS IS RIDICULOUS! ARE THERE REALLY DRIVERS OUT THERE THAT HAVE NEVER GONE AROUND CARS THAT ARE STOPPED OR HAVE BEEN STOPPED ALONGSIDE THE ROAD.IF YOU GO BY WHAT HAS BEEN REPORTED, HE WENT AROUND CARS THAT WERE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF BOCA CHICA. I WOULD'VE DONE THE SAME. AS FOR RICK NOT STOPPING WHILE THE OFFICER RAN AFTER HIS VEHICLE 100 FEET. UNLESS THE OFFICER HAD A SIREN ON WHILE CHASING RICK'S VEHICLE ON FOOT, IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO SEE THE OFFICER. GOING 100 FEET BEFORE STOPPING IS HARDLY A CRIME! QUIT WASTING MY TAXPAYER MONEY AND GO AFTER A REAL CRIMINAL.

Give me a break everyone...........Sounds like an attitude arrest by the Police Officer. Just pray it doesn't happen to any one else. You are right Juan, we don't wish this on anyone. One thought; the officer caught up to him on foot. Does that sound like the driver was evading? Don't think so.............

Thanks to police officer for keepin this attorneys in line.
It seems that "Slicky Ricky" must have been hiding something in that automobile as not to see the Poli chasing after him.
Or did he (Zayas) saw the Poli after him?

Has Ricky apologized to his wife? When will he just go away?

What is ridiculous is that Zayas was arrested for a traffic offense, which is punishable by fine only even if he was guilty. Evading arrest? Really? Zayas was driving a car, the police officer was on foot. Seems to me if Zayas had the intent of evading arrest, he could have easily done so. Sounds like the officer was having a bad day and didn’t take to Zayas’ (a lawyer’s) attitude. Based on what I read in the article, the officer totally overreacted to a simple traffic stop. I don’t question the officer’s credibility, I question his judgement!
