WILL OLIVEIRA TURN HIS BACK ON TSC IN FAVOR OF GARCIA'S PARTNERTSHIP?

By Juan Montoya Even though the majority of the Texas Southmost Ciollege board of trustees has made it clear that it will not accept TSC-UTB president Juliet Garcia's "partnership" proposal that would dissolve the college district and hand over all the assets to the UT System, a bill filed by State Rep. to fund the partnership will be heard this Wednesday in Austin. Currently, negotiators for both entities are in negotiations to determine the nature of the relationship after TSC's Adela Garza, Rene Torres, Trey Martinez and Kiki Rendon voted to have two stand-alone institutions instead of the partnership proposal favored by Garcia. Oliveira filed HB 3689 on March 11, the last day to file a bill. On March 23, the bill was laid before the house for the first time and it was referred to its appropriate committee, Higher Education. Now we understand the bill is scheduled for a public hearing on Wednesday. The bill, as it is written, does not voice the opinion’s of the constituents or TSC representative. Now, if Oliveira has chosen to is go at it alone, he may go ahead and push for the bill as written, or do what he was elected to do and represent the wishes of his constituency. On the other hand, he may wish to push for the bill as written and disregard the vote of the majority of the elected TSC trustees. One option would be for him to let this bill die in committee. Another option is for him him to to submit a CSHB 3689. CSHB stands for Committee Substitute House Bill. What a committee substitute does is that it allows a bill to be amended in committee to correct its language and make a better bill. In this way he could work with the wishes of the board as per the motion at the board meeting and could replace his original language with language reflecting the wishes of the board. Now observers are wondering whether he will listen to the voice of the TSC trustees or whether he will do as his cousin (trustee David Oliveira)obviously wishes he would. The committee on higher education has several bills in their committee, so it is strange to many people that out of the 130 bills that this one was selected so early on to have a hearing. It would be a grave mistake to think that Oliveira has used his quarter of a century as a member of the Texas Legislature to nudge someone to get this bill a hearing and keep his constituency out in the cold on an issue that will affect so many people.

Since the "partnership" was an agreement between UT System and TSC....does this mean the state will dictate a partnership? Obviously Rene Oliviera is supporting David Oliviera, but how does this bill force TSC to roll over and bow down to Juliet and her "committee". This is surely an issue for local control and local determination. Juliet is a hired hand, and the legislature should ignore her and leave the TSC issue to our elected officials. David Oliviera and Bobby Robles should take their arrogance and sit on it. They are willing to give up the community college just for the prestige of a UT campus....one that in 20 years has only graduated 17% of its students. We need TSC!

Very Simple:
The voters put Torres, Adela, Trey and Kiko.
The Voters got rid of Ortiz and
the Voters can get rid of Oliveira!

Simple as that

Oliveira turned his back on TSC a long time ago.

Oliveira's job is to protect TSC AND UTB. Seems he is only concerned with protecting UTB. Any word on more "secret" meetings? I suppose Oliveira is having many.

Where has Lucio been? Indeed, where have any of the Lucios been? Have they been looking out for anyone besides themselves? I doubt it.

Oliveira never listens. He is too important. He does not take orders from anyone except Juliet, Robles and David. They tell him what to do and when to do it. He can't think for himself. Well, really, he can't think. Too much during college.
