IS MARTINEZ RUNNING FOR MAYOR, OR FOR POPE?

By Juan Montoya

I am in receipt of Brownsville mayoral candidate Tony Martinez's slick campaign pamphlet and am ready to write Pope Benedict and nominate him for Bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville.
If we are to believe the San Antonio ad agency that produced the campaign mail out, Tony – who attended Catholic schools, graduated from St. Mary's Law School, is on the boards of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nursing Home, the Incarnate Word Academy and St. Joseph's Academy, and is the founder and benefactor of Guadalupe Regional (Catholic?) Middle School – believes in "education and the need to give back" to the community.
So why hire someone from outside the city to produce his campaign literature?
I thought giving back meant hiring Joe King (also a Catholic), or maybe even some local advertising gurus to pump his apparently hefty campaign chest into the Brownsville economy.
Combine that cozy relationship with the Almighty and the lyrics of Vicente Fernandez's "El Rey," and Martinez's propaganda neatly corners the religious-cultural niche that is supposed to make local Hispanics feel warm and fuzzy all over.
The cover of the pamphlet features a smiling (and unshaved) young graduate of Guadalupe Regional Middle School(?) with the caption in a western-Hispanic font that reads "No Hay Que Llegar Primero, Pero hay Que Saber Llegar."
You know the lyrics. Inside the pamphlet he is identified as "El Rey de Jobs," as brazen an attempt at pochismo is there was ever one in this season's pre-election hype.
Then lower, and reminiscent of the five-year plans favored by communist regimes in the past, is a five-step plan toward high-paying jobs that advocates strengthening ties between city libraries and public schools, co-sponsoring parental involvement forums, lobbying Washington for money for mentoring local students, nudging local businesses to provide internships, give awards to recognize quality teachers, and to encourage their employees to volunteer their time (and money) to better the city, and (finally), to make it easier for adults to get a college degree.
Our only question to Martinez would be: Are you running for the local school board, a college trustee, or UT System Regent?
Now, we all agree a little education is a dangerous thing, but the feel-good approach only works when combined with real dollars and cents investments in the community.
Is he satisfied with the performance of local schools? Obviously, as a product of Catholic schools, and a founder of one, he must feel that his kids deserve only the best. And further, since he is an obvious advocate of higher education, where does he stand on the UTB-TSC question? We know that Juliet Garcia and her son Oscar are playing key roles in his campaign and are often seen campaigning together and at his events.
Is he satisfied with the 17 percent graduation rate over six years at the Harvard or by the Rio Grande track record over the last 20 years under Garcia's watch? Or with its less than 50 percent retention rate for freshmen, its "unrated" rank among institutions its size, and how it saddles local students with the highest tuition and facility user fees in the State of Texas?
Unlike the lyrics in Chente's El Rey where the crooner sings that, "Con dinero y sin dinero, yo hago siempre lo que quiero." he'll find out that local residents – while championing education – have to focus on basic survival working for the depressed wages available in the local economy made so by a tradition of exploiting local labor by local industry and manufacturers across the Rio Grande.

This is the way the sunshine boys over at the Chamber and at the college have sold us to potential investors.
If in the four years as mayor you can improve Juliet's track record, you may get some bites. But if it turns out that she is your image of a concerned local citizen "giving back" to the community, entonces "sigues siendo el ..ey"

I still don't know where he stands on just about everything that concerns Brownsville. Yeah, we all wish our kids get a good education. Go out on a limb and tell us what the heck you think Tony. So I can have something to compare you with the other candidates. Until then, I'm with Big Ed.

Approximately two weeks ago I received a phone call at my residence from what sounded like a young female asking for my support of Tony Martinez for mayor. I listened to the dribble of how he was for improving opportunities for the community as well as improving road conditions, bringing different entities together yada, yada, yada. I then asked a simple question: How does he propose to do all this? Unfortunately, the young lady could not answer this question but assured me Mr. Martinez would be calling me back within the next few days. So far two weeks have elapsed and I'm still waiting for good ole Tony's call.

Excellent Article Juan
If Tony Martinez REALLY Believes in Brownsville why would he send thousands and thousands of campaign dollars to boost San Antonio's economy????? HYPOCRITE

I too am a product of Catholic schooling not because my parents were very religious but, the eduction was better than public schooling and we're talking back in the 60's & 70's.
When the PEDOPHILIA scandal with the CATHOLIC church came out, the church lost me. Especially when they tried to cover up the problem by moving these monsters around further victimizing more CHILDREN. In my opinion from the POPE TO THE LOCAL PREIST were all accomplices to this horrific crime. I can only guess TONY MARTINEZ was not disturbed by it.
For me the PEDOPHILIA SCANDAL was a wake up call as to WHAT ELSE IS WRONG WITH THE CHURCH.
I came to the conclusion the CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS BECOME VERY LIBERAL AND SOCIALIST.
When the CATHOLIC CHURCH overwhelmingly supports the Democrat party-the party that is so very proud of murdering by aborting over 40 MILLION BABIES this is a very LIBERAL STANCE!!!!!! I can only guess TONY MARTINEZ is not disturbed by this!!!!!! I find it odd he seems to be very involved in many Catholic Schools, yet he's OK MURDERING 40 MILLION UNBORN BABIES???? VERY HYPOCRITICAL DON'T U THINK!!!!!!

The Catholic church is a major proponent for SOCIAL JUSTICE. According to wikipedia it mean"...Social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality and involves a greater degree of economic egalitarianism through progressive taxation, income redistribution, or even property redistribution. These policies aim to achieve what developmental economists refer to as more equality of opportunity than may currently exist in some societies, and to manufacture equality of outcome in cases where incidental inequalities appear in a procedurally just system...." THIS IS SOCIALISM !!!!! In my book TONY MARTINEZ IS A SOCIALIST.
To further my point AS TO HOW EXTREME SOCIALIST HE IS, I attended UTB/TSC Mayor Candidate Forum last night, 4/19/11.
I was floored by TONY MARTINEZ answer to the question-How would you ENHANCE THE GREEN INITIATIVE?
And he said he would support more biking trails, more public transportation and get this-ELIMINATE THE USE OF CARS!!!!!
EXTREME?????? WHAT DO YOU THINK!!!!!!!
If this man becomes our mayor WE WILL BECOME A SOCIALIST CITY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. CITIZENS OF BROWNSVILLE IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT????????????
I VOTE NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
PS Pat Ahumada label himself a "GREEN MAYOR"
CAMARILLO NOT FAR BEHIND HE'S ANOTHER "GREENY WEENY"
AGAIN I VOTE NOOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Why criticize Tony for what many others do in this community. Local officials like Senator Eddie Lucio, Rep. Eddie Lucio III, Rene Oliviera get most of their campaign money and support from outside the Valley. Should they be trusted to serve us when outsiders are paying the bills. We have to hire outside contractors for a lot of services in Brownsville because local businesses aren't bonded...does that mean they don't want our business, or that they are too lazy to get bonded. Tony puts a lot of money into this area...and supports many non-profit organizations. I don't see any other candidates on lists of those who donate to non-profit organizations. I have never seen Ahumada, Camarillo, Garza on lists of donors for anything. Does that mean they don't support local interests???

Tony Martinez idolizes Obama and Juliet. That's enough for me to vote for anyone BUT him.

"...I RATHER VOTE FOR TONY OR PAT THAN
FAT MARRANILLO!..."
You mean you're ok with tony martinez:
EXTREME RADICAL VIEWS OF SUPPORTING THE MURDER OF 40 MILLION UNBORN AMERICAN CITIZEN BABIES BY ABORTION!!!!!!!!
HIS EXTREME "GREEN" STANCE OF ELIMINATING THE USE OF CARS THAT WE NEED TO GO TO WORK OR ANYWHERE YOU WANT TO GO TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HIS ASSOCIATION WITH THE NOW CONVICTED FELON EX JUDGE ABLE LIMAS BY DONATING TO HIS CAMPAIGN AND SPONSORED A FUND RAISER!!!!!!!!
BTW TONY MARTINEZ SON-TREY, WAS CONVICTED FELON ABLE LIMAS CAMPAIGN TREASURER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HIS EXTREME ASSOCIATION WITH THE MOST CORRUPT DEMOCRATS LIKE GILBERTO HINOJOSA, AURORA DE LA GARZA, ERNIE HERNANDEZ, HECK ALL DEMOCRATS IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS ARE CORRUPT!!!!!!
AND YOU'RE OK THAT HE SPEND HIS CAMPAIGN DOLLARS NOT IN BROWNSVILLE BUT SAN ANTONIO!!!!!!! YET HIS SIGNS SAYS
" HE BELIEVES IN BROWNSVILLE "!!!!!!

PAT AHUMADA YOU'RE OK THAT HE TRIED TO STEEL 27K TAX MONEY THAT I & EVERY TAX PAYER PAID !!!!!
YOU'RE OK WITH HIS EXTREME ENVIRONMENT STANCE!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU'RE OK THAT UNDER HIS WATCH UNEMPLOYMENT HAVE SKYROCKETED TO 12%!!!!!!!!
YOU'RE OK THAT UNDER HIS WATCH FOR EVERY TAX $1.OO DOLLAR THE CITY COLLECTS 75 CENTS GOES TO EMPLOYEE EXPENSE!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU'RE OK WITH THE STUPID PLASTIC BAN!!!!!!!!!!!

I ONLY HOPE AND PRAY YOU ARE THE MINORITY OF THE IDIOTS THAT WILL VOTE FOR THESE EVIL PEOPLE!!!!!!!

IF BROWNSVILLE IS TO SURVIVE WE NEED A PRIVATE SECTOR SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN LIKE MIKE GARZA TO CLEAN HOUSE. HE HAS MY VOTE.
