TSC-UTB MEMORIAL REMEMBERS KENNEDY APPOINTMENT OF GARZA TO FEDERAL BENCH

(The memorial exhibit at the TSC-UTB Arnulfo Oliveira Memorial Library brought us memories of the time we interviewed Federal Judge Reynaldo Garza on the anniversary of the death of John F. Kennedy, the man who appointed him as the first Mexican-American federal judge in history. He was confirmed and sworn in on April 29, 1961, to the U.S. Court for the Southern District of Texas. The article first appeared in the Nov. 22, 1982 issue of the Brownsville Herald, 21 years after his appointment and 19 after Kennedy was assassinated.)

By Juan Montoya

"I always go to Holy Mass on this day and offer my communion for him. It was too bad his term was cut short by the assassination."

"He had given the country new hope with his sincerity and his charisma. I think the mood then was one of renewed hope plus the fact that he was very energetic and optimistic made him loved all over the world."

"I remember him talking to me when he appointed me to the bench. At the time, he told me there were 6 million Mexican-Americans in the country and said 'I hope you do a good job because what you do will depend on whether other Mexican-Americans will be appointed.'"

"I think that Kennedy appointing me to the bench made it a little easier for those that followed. Now it's not just Democrat getting nominated. It's across the board." "I wasn't looking for it Check Spelling(nomination). A lot of the other people were ahead of me so I was rather surprised by it. I had met him before in Laredo, but I wasn't expecting him to nominate me."

"I've seen portraits of him with lit candles in little jacales in the interior of Mexico. That's why I value the one he sent me there on the wall. It's my keepsake."

"Everyone has a soft spot of kindness for the president who appointed him to the bench, but I think Kennedy captured the imagination of the Mexican-American people and Latin Americans all over the world. It got us involved in politics."

"He told me that he didn't want anybody to be a second-class citizen in this country. That all citizens should enjoy the same rights as anybody else. He struck me as being a very sincere man. One wonders what might have been..."

WHOA!!! This dude really seems to know his history. We need to vote him into something of importance. The Mayor's urine collecter, a janitor at the Fort Brown auditorium, something, dammit.

Judge Garza was and honest man who earned an honest living.
He may be one of the VERY FEW HONEST JUDGES & DEMOCRAT THAT WE HAVE EVER HAD LIVED. So far haven't found any scandals involving Judge Garza and to his favor he did avoid being scandalized if he would have join the Carter Administration. Especially now that we know Carter was the worst Presidents America has ever had until recently, b HUSSEIN obama now is officially the worst president EVER!

The history buff is also an obvious subscriber to the National Enquirer. Nothing but one of those so called "well read" types. I'd vote for him.

This is about Judge Garza, not Kennedy. Judge Garza was a humble and honest man who achieved great things. He loved to play poker and had a very sharp sense of humor. He was a great story-teller, as well as being a fine jurist. The Federal Court should have been named for him, but was not because he and his family were not as political and pushy as the Vela family.
