By Juan MontoyaSports officials (referees, umpires, zebras, etc.) who have officiated at Brownsville Independent School District events must be crying foul after they attempted to cash their checks only to find that they – like a football or basketball – bounced.
BISD Chief financial Officer Tony Fuller was said to be "embarrassed" when he notified board members and administrators to notify them of the snafu.
"I'm embarrassed, too," he is said to have told them during a meeting Friday.
It is unknown how the district's athletic department and finance department got to be in this sad state of affairs, but after the huddle Fuller said he would try to find a way out of the mess ASAP.
"It can't be soon enough," said a district employee. "Can you imagine what people who got those checks think of us? It's downright embarrassing for the entire district and for the city of Brownsville."
No one knows the full extent of the shortfall, but insiders say that there are at least 100 checks that did not clear.
"And this includes officials not only from Brownsville, but from out of town as well," said the source. "I can just imagine what they must think of us now."

In all my 5 decades with BISD, I had never heard of anything like this ever happening. Why is the athletic department in such shape, Tony, and why had you not caught it before the checks went out? Where is the audit department? And how much money did we give the previous AD to apeace him? Or is this the fault of the new AD? Whichever, someone needs to get a slap on the wrist. I guess this is going on all over Brownsville. "Come on baby light my fire" should be changed to "Come on baby line my pockets!" Where can I join up for a piece of the pie?
The main responsibilty is the Super, fire his ass, the cfo and la loba.

This would of been for the regional soccer tournament and BISD money would not have been used. UIL must not have gotten the money to BISD in time or it was deposited in the wrong acoount.
