If ever there was a Man with a Sodden Touch that makes everything he touches turn to dung, Brownsville Fire chief Lenny Perez is a prime candidate for the title.
It seems that Lenny just can't help himself whether it's shameless self-p
romotion (as in the Causeway Collapse) or whether it's injecting himself in local politics.You remember that during the Causeway Collapse then-Congressman Solomon Ortiz issued proclamations to be presented in City Hall to the paramedics and techs who rescued victims who had fallen into the drink when a barge brought down a section of the causeway?
Tricky Lenny didn't invite the paramedics who had actually risked their lives to try to save the victims. Instead, he accepted the awards in their name and basked in the unearned spotlight. Later, at the stations, the proclamations were handed to the real heroes unceremoniously.
Well, he's at it again.
During a recent political BBQ for Roman Perez, some firefighters were passing by in their firetruck and stopped to get a plate of chicken. Firefighters often go to get their lunch on trucks in case they get a call while they are away from the station.
Three firefighters stopped to get a plate and they asked Roman to pose with them in front of their truck, which Perez did.
When Lenny found out about it, he was livid. We understand that the act of spontaneous support for Roman resulted in a written reprimand for the three firefighters as a result.
Firefighters, by the way, are supporting Roman because his opponent Rick Longoria has come out publicly against collective bargaining for them or for police.
"Doesn't he remember when he himself posed in front of a firetruck with one of the candidates he was supporting in past commission city races?" asked a firefighter. "Why the double standard?"
But, wait. There more (Aun hay mas).
When firefighters were passing by the Central Library they stopped to help a lady whose keys had been left in her car. As the firefighters stopped to help, they say that one of the candidates there (Charlie Atkinson?) called Perez to complain that they were on city time.
(Atkinson, by the way, has had a running dispute with the firefighters union leadership accusing them of interfering with his efforts to give non-civil service city employees raises. He claimed in a letter that the "Me-too" clause in their contract with the city means that they would claim a raise if the rest of the city employees get one.)
Now, firefighters often help people open their cars if they're in the vicinity as a public service.
However, Lenny would have none of it and ordered them to leave without opening the car for the woman.
"That makes the firefighters look like we're not there to help the people," said the firefighter. "We hope the lady knows that we would help her if the chief (Perez) had let us."

I would believe the story but the car belonged to the recently fired Marco Longoria. Nice try. Brownsville firefighters are the top firefighters paid in the State of Texas and they should thank Commissioner Atkinson for orchestrating that. Now that Akinson has taken a stance that he will help the non civil service employees before he helps anyone else, they endorse his opponent who does not live in District 2. Very smart Marco, no wonder they fired your dumb ass!
It is somewhat unfair to refer to Lenny as a "DICK". He is simply a classic example of the Peter Principle in action. He is, of course, clueless, and there isn't a man or woman in the BFD that doesn't know it. One day perhaps the FD will get a leader worthy of the fine men and women who risk their lives to protect this community whilst being continually subjected to Lenny's inept micromanagement. We can only hope.

Mr. Perez seems to have misplaced priorities. He has allowed himself to be manipulated twice in recent days by politicians running for re-election. That is very short-sighted. Both of these politicos may soon be gone, but the men he has backstabbed, disrespected and thrown under the bus will still be working with him and for him.
If a politician went to a fire chief at the NYPD with a frivolous complaint about his men, he would likely tell the guy to "blow it out his ear." But in Brownsville we have a chief so weak he caters to every whim of our barking dog politicos.

Leonardo Perez is a person who has come up through the ranks of BFD, he knows better. He knows what his FF's are made of and knows that they make him look good, but he can't help himself he has to show everyone how inept he really is. Lenny I know your hands are tied but do the right thing stop being a megalomaniac you serve the public not your ego.
Yes Perez, you've done a lot of stupid things. There is no point of being chief if no one respects you... retire and cut your losses
