CORTEZ: SNATCHING VICTORY FROM THE JAWS OF DEFEAT

"Ain't no rest for the wicked..."

By Juan Montoya
Jut when we thought we'd heard the last of former Brownsville Independent School District board member Ruben Cortez he pops up somewhere.
This time it's not in his incarnation as a gouging jail commissary concessionaire with his sidekick Rick Zayas, or as the appendage to a BISD principal who got her job while he was a school board member. Now we understand that while everyone has been busy with the city elections Mr. Cortez has been quietly nibbling away at getting himself elected to the Region One Education Service Center.
"Calladito, calladito, but he campaigned for months to get elected," said a former Los Fresnos school administrator. "Nobody knew anything until the results came in."
The Center, which serves over 399,000 students and educators in seven counties in south Texas including Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb, Willacy and Zapata counties, held elections to its eight-member board.
Although the board has yet to canvass the vote by May 31, the results of the balloting were delivered to the Region One offices April 4. Indications are that Cortez campaign tirelessly to replace Dora L. Ruiz for Place 5 (Cameron County), of Los Fresnos.
Once the results are canvassed by the board, Cortez will assume her place June 1.
The Center works to assist school districts in improving student performance, assist districts to operate more efficiently and economically, and implement initiatives assigned by the legislature or the Commissioner of Education.
Given the lackluster performance that Cortez demonstrated while on the majority with BISD, we can only wish Region One the best.
Ironically, it was as a result of him being rejected by the district voters that Cortez was able to run for the Region One seat.
The Region On bylaws state that "Any citizen of the United States who is at least 18 years of age, a resident in the county area represented by the seat, who is not engaged professionally in education or who is not a member of a school district board of trustees, a county board of trustees, or a board of an institution of higher education, may be elected to the Board of Directors membership."

WHO VOTES IN THAT ELECTION?

Who votes? Each district's board members. Just like Arnie Olivares, a felon, bribed the school board members to get insurance contract. What do you think this slimy bastard want from school districts? if elected.

Ruben is un-employed and un-educated........has no resources except for his wife who is employed......perhaps he should consider doing what most honorable men do....take responsibility, get a job and get educated if you can handle it......pubic service is for those who have something to offer..........they do not take.............from the public that they should be serving......
