By Juan Montoya
I remember when a teacher friend of mine came to the trailer house being used by barrio candidate Lucino Rosenbaum Jr. in his run against former Democratic heavyweight D.J. Lerma for commissioner of Precinct 1.
Lucino knew he was taking on one of the big boys that no one up to then (1982?) had dared to take on.
"Can you help out Gilbert?" my friend, a teacher who was trying to form a union at the BISD, asked. "He's running for the school board and we need to have someone to keep Raul Besteiro in line. Gilbert's got his heart in the right place."
And so, whenever we had a pachanga for Lucino we would make sure that Gilbert Hinojosa knew and that he would show up "de corva" to meet and greet a ready-made audience. We even put his campaign literature in the Rosenbaum headquarters because Gilbert didn't have a headquarters of his own.
Gilbert would eventually go on to win his place on the BISD school board, but unbeknownst to my teacher friend, he had bigger things in mind than educating the chilluns.
It wasn't long afterwards that Bestreiro got his buddies in the Democratic party to dangle a juicy morsel in front of Gilbert to lure him away from bothering Besteiro and his cronies at the district.
And then, in the twinkling of an eye, Gilbert's commitment to the education of our children vaqnished as he grabbed for the brass ring, in this case, a county court-at-law position.
Afterwards, when Lucino made a run against Pete Benavides for county commissioner, Gilbert forgot how Rosenbaum had helped him in his initial run at BISD board member and supported Big Pete (peace be with him).
Now we hear that Gilbert wants to be the Chairman of the state Democratic Party.
Now, let's see what his qualifications are.
He lost to Republican Carlos Cascos for the position of Cameron County Judge, only the second time in history after Tony Garza, who Gilbert never dared to face.
He was also the chairman of the Cameron County Party when John Wood lost to Republican Carlos Cascos. Try as he might, he could not steal that election.
And in the first time in history a Republican won the U.S. District 27 Congressional representative spot after beating Solomon Ortiz, thanks in small part to the underwhelming turnout for Ortiz in Cameron County.
And now he says that he wants to change the situation and provide the people of the State of Texas with someone who is socially-conscious, open-minded and progressive after Republicans have driven the satte into the ditch?
He told the local daily that he had received several endorsements from out of state and that more were coming in after word got out that he is running for the office.
It is interesting to note that Hinojosa was one of four attorneys (out of about 60) that former District 404th District Judge chose to hand out ad litem plums that netted him $100,000s yearly on a silver platter.
When he was county judge, it was up to him to decide who got hired and who got fired based not on competence, but rather on personal loyalty to His Highness. His team of sycophants stretched from Combes to El Ranchito, all on the county payroll. Remember Remi Garza, his administrative assistant? He was paying Garza (who wasn't academically qualified for his position) more than someone with a master's degree in urban planning simply because his parents were political big shots in San Benito.
And Frances Domenski was one of about three receptionist in his office. Her qualifications? She was a political mover in El Ranchito, as was "Silver," another paid hack of Combes.
Nonetheless, county voters decided that had had enough of his brand of Boss Gil politics and threw him out when they voted for Cascos.
When his candidate for president Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic nomination, Gilbert closed access to the supporters of Barack Obama, in effect locking them out of the party's campaign headquarters.
It is doubtful that operative of the state Democratic Party know any of this or else they would think twice about flocking to Hinojosa's door.

Hopefully no one is "flocking" to Gilberto's door. The corruption in the Democratic Party in Cameron County is a reflection of Gilberto's willingness to offer corruption to protect Democratic officials. While we can expect that all elected Democratic officials are aware of this corruption and the need to accept it to be elected, we really don't want our "corruption" to be expanded to the state. Gilberto Hinojosa is a corrupt politician and we need to protect the state of Texas from this RGB bacteria.
Gilberto wants to protect his corruption and his ego here by seeking to corrupt more of the Democratic Party of Texas....if that is possible. Living in Cameron County has shown me that the "oldest profession" is politics because they sell themselves for far more than the ladies of the night....and don't have to stand on a corner to do it. Gilberto Hinojosa is the biggest "political whore" in Cameron County and his election as State Democratic Chair would only add his name to the list of other locally elected or former "political whores"; Eddie Lucio, Rene Oliviera, Eddie "The Turd" Lucio, Jim Solis, "Disable" Limas, Ruben Hinojosa, "Chuy" Hinojosa, Solomon Ortize, Armando Villalobos, Conrado Cantu, et al. They are all willing to sell us out; or sell their services, to the highest bidder. Remember, Tony Zavaleta, the "seasoned professional" has said that corruption is part of the Mexican culture and we should accept it". What does that say for Tony??????? Has he accepted it??????
Gilbert is a pulga, que brinca de perro en perro.
Gil is a flee that jumps from dog to dog (no insult to the dog.
