It was just a matter of time before the other shoe dropped following the guilty plea convictions of former 404th District Court Abel Limas and former state rep Jim Solis.
Local Attorney Peter Zavaletta – citing evidence of bribery and payoffs that affected a case against him before Limas that Solis represented – asked a court Monday to dismiss the case against him with prejudice and grant sanctions against the two men.
"In Juan Antonio Coronado vs. Peter Zavaletta et al. filed in the 357th District Court, he charges that "both former judge Lima's and the plaintiffs' attorney have pled guilty in the United States District Court to crimes involving racketeering, extortion, and bribery.
"In connection with each plea of guilty, facts were admitted in support of the plea stating that a bribe in the amount of $8,000 was paid by Solis to Limas in return for favorable rulings in favor of the plaintiffs and against the defendants...
"Favorable rulings for which bribes were paid by Solis, and accepted by Limas, included the granting of continuance of the trial, the facilitating of a deposition of another defendant, and the denial of yet another defendant's motion for summary judgement. Limas discussed these rulings he was to make in favor of plaintiff in recorded calls with Solis, who gave Limas instructions throughout the process about what he wanted from Limas."
Neither Limas nor Solis, Zavaletta charges, disclosed the ongoing conflicts of interest.
Zavaletta "urges that the just sanction in this matter include the dismissal with prejudice of the case against him, and that sanctions, including for attorneys' fees and costs, of $50,000 be imposed..." upon Limas and Solis and all others who may later plead guilty in this scheme."
In that case, Juan Antonio Coronado and Francisco Solis Ramirez vs. the Brownsville Herald the plaintiffs alleged that both Zavaletta and the Herald had defamed them by publishing their names in a political advertisement where Zavaletta charged that District Attorney Armando Villalobos had been lax in prosecuting child offenders.
The Limas order denying the summary judgement was appealed to the 13th Court of appeals and then on to the Texas Supreme Court. It was stayed when Freedom Communications went into bankruptcy.

Good. Make 'em pay.
There are a lot more corruptors out there; the question is, will more be brought to justice. No doubt Limas selected a few "small fish" to fry in his case, leaving the biggies to continue their corruption of the judiciary system. We need to look closely at the Sheriff, the District Attorney, the District Clerk and the other judges to see how vested they are in the corruption of Gilberto Hinojosa's Democratic Party in Cameron County.
Former DA DeLeon, Brownsville Herald, and DA Candidate Zavaletta small fish? Then that's one huge ass pan! Seems like they knew exactly who 'needed' frying first.
Agree with the ones anonymous names.
was appealed to 13th then to supreme court? What happened in the 13th?
Procedural improprieties are not dispositive of the merits of the case.
We remand for new trial on the merits.
Robles is next!!!!!
Peter Zavaletta is no angel! He got exactly what he deserves when he let his narcissistic ways get in the m iddle of his vying for the DA post. This pendejo piece of shit is well know for exaggerating issues and is a habitual liar. I hope the previous ruling rendered holds.
