LOONEY LENNY: FIRE CHIEF'S FOIBLES CONTINUE

By Juan Montoya

Well, the tales of clueless Lenny Perez, City of Brownsville Fire Department Chief just keep on coming.

This time it involves a case on Stillman Road where an assistant chief was directing a firefighter to back up a fire truck while fighting a grass fire.

According to the training manual, the firefighter is instructed to keep his eyes on the person directing him who is standing directly in front of him where he can see him. Although he can look in his mirrors, the standard rule is that you follow the directions of your guide because he can see where he is guiding you.

It just so happened that last week a firefighter was being directed to back up when the assistant chief who was guiding him got a call on his radio and instead of ordering the firefighter to stop while he answered his mike pinned on his chest, he took his eyes off the truck and the firefighter kept on backing up.

Well, to make a long story short, the truck grazed another firetruck parked behind him. Nothing major, but an accident form had to be filled out nonetheless.

When Lenny – who happened to be at the scene – found out about it, he immediately asked for the accident report to be filed and ordered the firefighter to submit to a drug test.

The assistant fire chief who was guiding the firefighter protested and explained that it had been his fault in not stopping the driver, but Lenny – a stickler for policy – persisted and ordered the driver to undergo the examination and submit a urine sample.

The driver's test turned out negative, of course.

Now, when does common sense prevail in this fire department? If you have witnesses who can show you that it was a minor oversight, firefighters are wondering why one of their own was forced to submit to the invasive procedure on the whim of the boss.

"That was a waste of time and money," said one. "But that's Lenny."

("That was a waste of time and money,")

If the fire chief doesn't have the authority to have anyone under him submit to a simple drug test, then get rid of him. He's being highly paid to be a mere figurehead. Something akin to the BISD superintendent. And since the fire chief is not akin to the BISD superintendent, he should not be ridiculed for randomly sending anybody for a drug test. And there shouldn't be any reason for any of his underlings to protest any of his such orders.
