JOHNNY CAVAZOS A MASTER AT SHELL GAME

"Donde quedo la bolita?"

By Juan Montoya

With a generosity unequaled among local philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Cavazos generously donated $50,000 for the "Johnny N. and Nena S. Cavazos Athletic Scholarship Endowment" during Wednesday's meeting of the Brownsville Independent School District.

"Wasn't that nice of Johnny?" gushed a member of the audience at the board meeting.

Then, after the congratulatory pats in the back and statements of undying gratitude for his gift to jocks in the BISD, the audience sat back and proceeded with the rest of the board's agenda.

And there, under the administration's recommendations for approval of bids for Third-Party Administrative Services, was the BISD Group Health Plan, Life, AD&D and Stop-Loss contract to be awarded to Mutual Assurance Administrators, Inc. (MAA) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma potentially worth $40 million.

Want to guess who the local broker is for MAA?

Would you believe the generous Mr. Cavazos who stands to make a 10 percent commisison – nearly $4 million – this contract year.

"I guess the $50,000 is a way to sugar-coat the bitter pill that Cavazos is still making a killing on the deal," said a BISD administrator. "What's $50,000 to get $4 million?"
Cavazos might have to wait just a little while longer for his cash because the trustees did not heed Springston's recommendation that Johnny's company get the contract and called forbids on it. Just a matter of time,we guess.

And so life goes on in our little corner of the world.

Johnny Cavazos, like the Kardenas Klan and Neal Simmons have made lots of money off the local taxpayers...its only right that they give some our money back to us in this way. Unfortunately, their donations for named facilities is their way of throwing their corruption into our faces. These are the real narcissists. Guys like Eddie Lucio would never think of giving his ill gotten gain back to the community this way. Naming facilities after these crooks is a reflection of our officials accepting their corruption.

$4 mil in exchange for $50,000, hell of a quid pro quo. Where can I sign up for that kind of a deal?

El Pedro dijo.If the district really want to save on budget, they need to get rid of positions that are redundant. Higher positions with high pay but not really producing much need to be abolished.
