Jose Luis Almazan sees space only as a child can see it: as a deep blue space dotted with snow-white stars, colorful planets, and a sunflower sun.
This vision, complete with a USA spaceship soaring amidst the celestial bodies, was creative enough to catch the attention of the officers at the Children's Museum of Brownsville who submitted the first-grader's painting to http://www.artsonia.com/, a site dedicated to display the art of children from throughout the world online.
If you go to the site, type in his artist ID joseluis28 in the name space and his painting will appear. The site allows you to order prints of his painting as well as other items like T-shirts, coffee cups, etc., to support the artist. His mother Ludivina Salinas and his father Jose Luis Almazan Sr., say that Jr., now 8, is an autistic child whose native intelligence and curiosity has caused wonderment in adults who have interacted with him.
"He took a class at the college and when he was introduced to the class he told them he was a scientist and that he was there to help them," said his mother. "He also participated in making a video for You Tube using the Beatles song "Help" as the backdrop. He played drums in that one."
Almazan Sr., a community leader from the Valle Escondido and Southmost area, said that his son has worked through various medical ailments but continues to exhibit an artistic streak and to demonstrate unusual talents despite his medical problems."
"Nothing seems to deter him from doing all these things even at his young age." he said. "We're very proud of him."
