With Brett Springston out of the picture as Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent and sidekick Chief Financial Officer Tony Fuller on administrative leave with pay, the trustees of the BISD will pass a balanced budget and keep taxes the same.
Springston, who reportedly will accept the position of superintendent with the Bartlett ISD – a district with two
schools, 410 students and a $3.5 million budget – resigned last week in advance of a forensic audit into the district's finances.Interim superintendent Carl Montoya placed Fuller on paid administrative leave after he refused to provide the majority of the board members with information for their budget workshop scheduled for last Wednesday.Ismael Garcia, formerly a CFO for the Raymondville School ISD is taking Fuller's place as the budget process proceeds until the passage of the final draft July 1.
"The majority of the board decided it was time for the dog to wag the tail instead of the other way around," said a BISD administrator. "The days of prima donas at the BISD are over. Who does Fuller think he is?"
The trustees have vowed to keep programs like the full-day kindergarten and classroom instruction and to cut instead from the top-heavy departments. They are looking at programs like the adult education formerly directed by Oscar Cantu (a fake PhD) where lead teachers (who don't teach) rule over the part-time instructors who are actually in the classrooms.
Some of the lead teachers make over $70,000 and limit their activities to supervising and keeping an eye on other teachers to inform director Debbie Alford of their activities."These teachers are getting paid very well not to do anything," said an area administrator. "Before Cantu, all adult education was taught by part-time and retired teachers. The part-timers get no health or retirement benefits or other stipends. It's actually a good deal for the district. Under Cantu, and now under Alford, they are basically getting paid not to teach. They should be put in regular classrooms to earn their keep."
Some of the lead teachers with enough time to retire opted not to take the district's offer of a buyout, preferring instead to coast along at their inflated salaries.
"Why should they?" asked the BISD administrator. "They're making good money and doing very little.
More than 78 percent of the BISD's costs are related to employee compensation and benefits. More than 200 employees opted to accept the BISD's early retirement offer and will save the district some $4.5 million.
As for Springston and Fuller's absence from the budget process, observers say that it should send a message to other who may think themselves as untouchable.
"The message the board's majority is sending is that everyone is expendable," said the administrator. "Either pull your weight and deliver the goods, or don't let the door hit your behind on the way out."

The "days of prima donas" will never be over at BISD. This group of "trustees" will just change so that their "prima donas" are now in charge. Just looking at the pay schedule in BISD proves that all the real money goes to the "prima donas" in administration and the teachers are at the bottom of the barrel....and at the bottom of barrel they are subject to the dictatorship of the "prima donas". We should not fool ourselves....BISD is just changing "prima donas".
I wish people would stop bashing the Adult Education dept, and really know what it is all about.Critizing those who have no clue how for many years no one even acknowledge the Adult Education department. Those people in the secondary schools are not even teaching these students who are dropping out.I will have you know that the people that dropped the ball in the high schools are the people that do not care, but the GED department has pick up the slack and graduated thousands of your students that were told they were not wanted in the high schools. Critizing the Adult dept are people who have nothing else to do, but sit themselves behind a desk and earn $115,00.00 to terrorize people and to throw power left and right. How dare you critizize the Adult Education dept under the administrator Debbie Alford, who has shown her exemplary direction, and fairness to students and teachers.Mrs. Alford, has many goals to offer for our community who let down thousands of students that were kick out of your tradition schools. You who critize the lead teachers that earn whatever they earn work to make the Adult Education dept successful under the direction of Debbie Alford. Those people who critize others are people who have nothing to do, but make waves and are very unhappy with their own lives.

The problem is that the lead teachers at the Adult basic department are not certified to teach secondary education. Look up their certificates....they are living beyond thier means and are afraid of losing thier gravy train.
Wasn't the administrator for adult ed moved from Canales because there were so many complaints about her? Why are problem principals reassigned to better jobs? Doesn't sound like a great adminitrator to me.

Who is the administrator? If you are making a statement, print the name of the individual. Otherwise the statement is worthless.

I'm sure that the Board will do the right thing. Since I don't know what goes on at Adult Ed, nor what Debbie Alford is doing, I will only say that at the end all WILL come out. Maybe she upset some at Canales and learned her lesson so is now doing a great job at Adult Ed. Unlike another administrator who was moved from Sharp to Cummings and continued with her shennenigans and finally got booted out for good!!
Interesting you say that. Cummings deserves better for their students than abusive teachers . Principal was trying to do her job by stopping all the abuse taking place. Where are you getting your information from? All you keep saying over and over is you don't like the principal. That's because she was doing her job. Can't give specifics can you. Keep running to Cata, she will take care of you and all those lazy teachers there. Way to go Mrs. Alford! Way to put AA in her place!
Lets get serious folks! For those of you jumping on the Debbie Alford bandwagon do not seem to know everything about this person. Ask around BISD and the number of supporters she has can be counted in one hand! Where ever she has worked she doesn't last very long...why you ask? Try all the grievances that have been filed against her!! Her leadership skills are "its better to ask for forgiveness than for permission". Furthermore, she has teachers that are Generalists E-4 (not certified for secondary) working at Adult Ed. or as Technology Specialist with no credentials!! This Adult Ed need to downsize by leaving the certified people in place and Generalist or special assignment people back in classroom where we can use them. They ride the gravy train at this campus!!!!Enough pandering principals who have proven "not to pull there weight" under the new mandate at BISD. Let's show them the door!
Well one thing is proven the people at adult education help people achieve their G.E.D. The personal attacks on debbie alford and her personnel have not forbitten them from doing good by their students who only have positive things to say. You don't know how hard it is to get A g.e.d. to me if you talk bad about somebody it means you are bitter on a personal level. What did they do to you? can you say?
