Reacting to persistent rumors that former city commissioner Charlie Atkinson had been placed in a coach's position at Stell Middle School above other applicants, Brownsville Independent School District trustees chairwoman Catalina Presas-Garcia has denied that the board has approved of his hiring.
"That has never come before the board and we would have to approve any new hires," she said. "At least three people have asked me the same thing. No, we haven't hired Mr. Atkinson and it's never come before the board for our approval."
Presas-Garcia said that the rumor mill has been working overtime as the board majority sets about to place the district in a firm fiscal footing. As the board
struggles to manage the district's dismal fiscal condition that in the last three years has seen its reserves dwindle from $148 million to less than $65 million, these rumors are now obstructing the process, she said.The current board approved a former FBI Supervisor to conduct a forensic audit to determine whether any illegal activity had occurred and present the evidence before the appropriate prosecutorial entities.
"We are involved in more important things than this," she said. "It's too bad we have to take time to address these issues. I spoke with Human Resources director Sylvia Atkinson and she assured me thatit has never been on our agenda."
Facing the trustees is the recent downgrading of the district's academic ranking due to the low performance by two schools in the city's southeast side. Also, as the district attempts to make do with the decrease in state funding of public schools.
Against this backdrop, questions about whether the former commissioner had been hired by the district seem trivial, she said.
"The coach I spoke with was complaining that we had reduced pay for extra activities from $35 to $20 per hour," she said. "I told him he should call the former members of the board's majority whose mismanagement of our district's finances have left us in this position. I feel like I'm in the same position the Obama administration is in. He inherited two unnecessary wars and a huge deficit and now they're blaming him. Charlie Atkinson will have to take his place in line like everybody else and go through the same process."

I do not for the life of me see how people can be so evil. Charlie lostr already,...so please let him be. He has gone to school to qualify him to be a teacher....he will apply and get a job i am sure. For people to wish him bad and to not get hired is just plain old mean. The Zleezmosos are dumb.
Charlie should have a chance to be employed like anyone else---especially since some of las viejas pedoras that work at certified personnel have made sure that husbands,daughters,sons,primos,etc. have gotten hired. They have pushed them to the front of the line.
Why is this not being investigated?
They just call the principal and get their peeps in without any questions.
Just check the records and it will come out.
Charlie did go to school to get certified he pay a large amount of money sat through some lectures and maybe visited some classrooms. This is no where near what a teacher who completes a certification program must endure. He would be qualifed for a law enforcement teaching postion. But the rumor doesn't have him applying for that.

Presas has not business being a board member. She is dumber than a box of rocks. And anonymous is right. How can an unemployed real estate agent afford an Escalade. Not even Mr Garcia likes you that much. I guess Linebarger makes th car payment and "Dr Escobedos" brother pays for the gas.
