With the turmoil surrounding the new administrative lineup at the Brownsville Independent School District, employees are holding their collective breath as the board decides who will hold the position left vacant by Carlos Guerra as Assistant Superintendent for Operations.
That position will oversee the athletic and maintenance departments.
Guerra, who was making about $85,000, had occupied the position since July 2008. A former superintendent at Santa Rosa ISD, he left the district after bitter litigation with the board who asked for his resignation. Among some of the complaints against Guerra then were alleged purchases of personal items using the SRISD credit card.
"They called him the Michelin Man," quipped a worker on the maintenance staff.
During his tenure, Guerra oversaw the performance of maintenance supervisor Rey Arteaga ($107,000) and former Athletic Director Joe Rodriguez. Rodriguez retired from the district last year after a contentious process which saw him file a lawsuit against board of trustees chairwoman Catalina Presas-Garcia after she went to the Cameron County District Attorney with audits containing alleged wrongdoings related to an annual scholarship fundraiser.
Tom Chavez now runs the department at $98,000.
Likewise, Arteaga's performance at maintenance have been the source of deep-seated criticism across the district.
However, sources close to the board say that the members have narrowed their search for Guerra's replacement. Although they would not say who the front runner for the position would be, they did say that it was a candidate from outside the district who demonstrated a proven capability at his past place of employment.
"He has a proven track record where he has been before," said a source in the administration. "Wherever he's gone he's straightened out the departments where he has been placed in charge. He's a stand-up administrator."

I thought the school board approved or disapproved recommendations from the Super? Lets see how many grievances come out of all this overstepping by the board?
What we have here is a bunch of TAX DOLLAR EMPLOYEES running a GIANT CORPORATION-BISD AND THEY ARE TOTALLY CLUELESS. TOTALLY INCOMPETENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We at BISD and The entire Ejidote of Brown Beanotown, believe and are ready to take a Woman with B---s to straigthen things out ...how about Ms. Picho Ramirez ?!?!?!?!?!?
Remember that in a Bus from Santa Rosa ISD was traveling north with some cheerleaders and the bus driver stopped and picked up some undocumented people.
The chearleaders called their parents to let them know some people were on the bus, well I wonder how many times the bus drivers pull that fast one before they got cought.
Did that all happened while Guerra was a in charge in Santa Rosa?
We are in the midst of unprecedented pendejadas, please vote next time.
At August 3rd 5.17pm. What do you expect from a "Dr." Who is not really a doctor. A Dr who can't think for herself and two secretaries. Especially the two secretaries. They cannot tell the difference between their ass and a whole in the ground. They are getting careless and greedy. Their time will come.
BISD loss on Guerra leaving the district! This guy was righteous and he left SRISD because the "insiders" as they are called didn't like that he would get on board with their underhanded deals. Yea, he was Superintendent but the SRISD Board was the one calling the shots! They ripped off the school district and he knew it. Tried to do something about it and they got rid of him. He had nothing to do with tires and that was the VAsquez boys along with others who skated or paid their way out? The bus thing was under that lesbian bitch Slyvia Atkinson! SRISD problem is themselves! They don't believe in following the rules or the law! They are their own worse enemies! What do you expect when you have blood marrying blood?
Guerra was milking the BISD chichi along
with some other fat cats,
that is why all the sore loosers no hayan donde esconderse del puro miedo.
