INSURANCE MOGUL CAVAZOS SUFFERS AORTIC ANEURISM

By Juan Montoya

Friends and relatives of local insurance broker Johnny Cavazos said the legendary insurance magnate who has had a near monopoly on big-dollar contracts with local governments suffered an aortic aneurysm this weekend and was hospitalized as a result.
Cavazos was taken to the hospital by an EMS unit after a few hours of care by local firemen because there was a scarcity of ambulances to transport him, a close friend of the insurance brroker said.
"There wasn't an ambulance available so paramedics in a fire truck provided the first care until one was available to transport him," he said.
According to the literature, "aortic aneurysm is a general term for any swelling (dilation or aneurysm) of the aorta, usually representing an underlying weakness in the wall of the aorta at that location. While the stretched vessel may occasionally cause discomfort, a greater concern is the risk of rupture, which causes severe pain; massive internal hemorrhage; and, without prompt treatment, death occurs rapidly."
Weakness of the aortic wall is usually treated with the placement of a endo-vascular stent to buttress the spot. However, in Cavazos case, he sought that treatment only recently and doctors in Houston said such a procedure would place him at severe risk. In other words, they didn't think he would survive the operation. On Friday and Saturday, Cavazos was said to be suffering from a massive fluid retention in his legs. After he was taken to a local hospital, doctors removed some 20 pounds from each limb. To complicate matters, he was also suffering from back problems as a result.
His wife, Nena, apparently would not be able to provide the necessary medical attention Cavazos needed at home and he was hospitalized as a result.
"The doctors are keeping him in the hospital for now until he can stabilize," said a friend. "Since they can't go in and do anything, it's anybody's guess how long he survives this emergency. It could be a week or a few months, but with a aortic aneurism, it's bound to happen sometime."
