VETERANS MEMORIAL H.S. HEARING: A STAGED PROTEST?

By Juan Montoya
Reacting to plans by the trustees of the Brownsville Independent School District to transform the new Veterans Memorial High School into a college prep campus for science technology and the medical professions, the school's administration and a cadre of her followers staged the pseudo protest at a meeting held there Tuesday.
The trustees announced they will follow the recommendations of the BISD administration and implement the Science Technology and Medical Professions College Preparatory Program (STAMP) at Veterans Memorial the 2012-2013 school year.
That move generated a protest against the idea by football parents which were joined by band, choir, Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps students and others who were told that those programs would be eliminated.
“You are singling out only students who are interested in medicine, science and technology and wasting a $75 million facility,” Mary de Leon is reported in the local daily telling the board. “You’re ignoring the football stadium, the gym and students with special needs."
Even though Superintendent Carl Montoya and the board assured the concerned parents and students that those rumors were without foundation, it soon became clear that the protest was not spontaneous, but rather was prompted and coordinated by someone in the school's administration.
"We have learned that before the meeting, students and parents supporting these programs were called to the office during class time to coordinate their activities at the meeting," said a BISD administrator. "It's not a coincidence that when Rolando Aguilar and Minerva Peña were introduced, there was clapping, and when the majority of the board – Catalina Presas-Garcia, Luci Longoria, etc. – there was booing from the crowd. You're not going to tell me that happened spontaneously. It was planned."
The trustees say that the administration planned the introduction of the pre-college program to turn out BISD graduates who would hit the ground running, much as they have done in East and West Coast school districts.
"We can't afford to have our students unprepared when they graduate from high school and not be competitive with other graduates at the national level," said board president Catalina Presas-Garcia. "This (implementation of program) can't be delayed anymore."
Presas-Garcia said she had spoken with a veterans representative who told her someone from the school had called to tell him that the name of the Veterans Memorial High School would be changed. She assured him that there was no plan to do that."
"Someone went through a lot of trouble to stir things up and put up the students and rile the veterans," she said. "We're going to do what it takes to prepare our students for college."
Additionally, she said that those who complained that the football program would be eliminated (it was not) did not realize the amount of money that the district pours into athletics.
"We have put more than $1.5 million into the football program each year for years and years," she said. "Has the program produced one professional football player as did Harlingen and Rio Hondo. On the other hand it took years for soccer to be funded by the BISD and now we're getting scores of our students getting scholarships as a result of the program. That should be our focus."

I think this is a very good move for Brownsville. They need a good school, many of the students that play sports never go anywhere.
Good thinking school board members.

Now student's who want to learn can learn, believe me, once you are out of high school.
You pay for education, studying in college is not cheap.

Montoya - don't let Presas manipulate you. Don't be like Dr. Carl Montoya and grow some balls. Veterans administration did not do what they are accused of doing. These students and parents went to the meeting on their own terms because they are worried about their school But you and the majority will say what you want to say. I would expect you to have some sense of journalistic integrity and be fair and objective. Presas has no business on the board, much less as president.

the problem with those of you saying this is a good idea is that BISD already has excellent magnet programs at various high schools. What is the true motive for this move? Only they and Dr. Atkinson know. Why disrput established and successful programs at Hanna and Porter? Explain that to me.

ANYONE WHO IS A SUCCESSFUL DOCTOR OR ENGINEER AND/THAT WAS A PRODUCT OF BISD'S MAGNET PROGRAMS PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND ?!?!??!
BISD IS A JOKE, MAGNET OR NO MAGNET !

So the anonymous blogger thinks it's okay because lots of kids that play sports don't go anywhere. That's sad because for many kids sports is the only way to college... If a child enjoys and excells at sports, it does not make them any less successful or a worse student. We should support our kids in all their endeavors...

Juan, you still have not answered how much does it cost to place a long article on your blog??? Please answer...

Cata has been booed since she came on board. She is so transparent with what she wants - power and money to buy Cadillacs and sent her kids to college. So athletics is not important anymore, huh? Well, I guess you can fire your husband! Get rid of sports because we have not produced a famous football player! Chiguguas, Caty con que piensas! If my child would have been pulled out of the classroom, I would be at the police station right now. Rita and Sandra tambien le tienen medio a la Gata de Cata. How they became AA's has been questioned before this and now we know! Cata que no te entra que nadie te quiere en el board. Los que votamos por ti andavmos borachos cuando fuimos a votar. Vete a vender sandias!

OUt of 500 students who apply and qualified to be part of the TM program at Hanna, only 150 student were allowed because of overcrowding. Think people, its a good move for the betterment of our children. The same for the technology program at Porter. $50 applied and got in but only 120 students actually got in because of overcrowding. The cheezmeh crowd are ignorant people who try to intimidate without caring that the students are winners in this move. Cheezmeh, you are yesterday's news.

This is Atkinson politics and payback. Sylvia's the one behind this whole thing. Presas is her lapdog, as is Montoya. Atkinson creates disruption, mistrust, and smokescreens wherever she goes. She's a bully.

Bueno pues make up your minds! Who do you hate more-Cata or Atkinson? Sounds like all of you just want to hate someone!

Brownsville has a football program that has always been wishful thinking since the heyday of Joe Rod time to educate our kids to be competitive because they cetainly aren't being hounded by college coaches yo play football. We need to end this mental jalada.

"We have put more than $1.5 million into the football program each year for years and years," she said. "Has the program produced one professional football player as did Harlingen and Rio Hondo.

Sounds like a bitter third string lineman on the "B" team that never got any play time is whispering in someone's ear.

High school football is about more than producing professional football players. It is about dedication and
teamwork. It is about developing character and confidence.
It provides after school activities that keep our children occupied and out of trouble.
Aside from the FB players, look at the band, cheerleaders,
Drill team and all the students that volunteer. The parents are so proud to see their children participating. Making big changes in A school's athletic program due to finances is
one thing, but to imply that it is worthless because it has not produced professional players is ridiculous.

BISD produced Julietta Villarreal Garcia. What do you have to say about that?

Brownsville Cheezmeh promotes hate by getting ignorant followers to do their bidding. That how Hitler got power because he catered to the ignorant people. We all like cheezmeh but when this group acts to hurt the betterment of a quality education for our children then a stand must be taken. Bobby Wrightman Cervantes is right that the leadership of Cheezmeh are guns for hire to promote hate and to riddicule the people they attack. Give it up Cheezmeh, you STINK!

Linda hasn't been arrested for forging WIC documents at her notary business? I thought the FEDs clamped down on that. I guess its coming.

Anonymous said...

Why has this turned into a barrage of anti-cheezmeh statements? This is about the education of our BISD students. Yes I went, a cheezmeh presence was there, I booed, clapped and cheered just like all the other parents there.

The " president " does not conduct herself in the manner I would expect from a "professional". If she runs again , I will vote against her.
