BEGUM SUPPORTERS COUNT ON VOTERS' DESIRE FOR FRESH IDEAS AND OLD FASHIONED INTEGRITY

By Juan Montoya
If you would rather have one of your peers instead of a lawyer, a bail bondsman or a court bailiff sit on the bench when you run into a problem, then the supporters of local businesswoman and community activist Yolanda Begum want you to join them at a fundraiser to elect her to the seat left vacant when Tony Torres (also not a lawyer, bail bondsman or bailiff) died last year.
Begum has emerged as a serious contender for the Justice of the Peace 2-2 seat that will be vacated by Kip Van Hodge after this year. Hodge, upon taking the position after his appointment, served the remaining year of Torres' term with the understanding that he would not run for the position.
Tonight, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Brownsville Art Museum, 660 E. Ringgold, Yolanda and her supporters will host a fundraiser on her behalf. Mariachis, a taquiza, and refreshments will be offered.
Unlike her opponents like Erin Garcia (actually Pct.2 commissioner Ernie Hernandez's daughter), Raul Lopez, or Javier Hernandez, Begum has not made her living off other people's misery. She seriously believs her life experience will strike a chord with the public. She was married to the late Michael Begum founder and owner of the New Yorker and Joy Lee clothing stores, and a serious advocate of growth and prosperity of her city. A mother, she has two children, Alexander Begum and Sasha Begum Norman.
A cancer survivor, she nursed her husband in his final years in his battle with the disease. That, and her own experience pushed her to dedicate herself to helping others. She has been cancer-free for 13 years this year.
Recently we had a chance to ask her why, given the fact that she really doesn't need the headaches of public office, she had entered politics.
"The position of justice of the peace is really the first level of the judiciary that the average person encounters," she said. "Whether you have a dispute with your renter or landlord, are having trouble with your child attending school, or have problems with your neighbor, this is the place where things can be resolved before they become more serious, It's the law at a grassroots level."
An accomplished artist, Begum has shared her formal art training in Monterrey and San Miguel de Allende with or most humble fellow residents when she donated her skills to teach art at the Centro Cultural in Cameron Park and the Browne Road Social Center.
She also taught art to teenagers on probation.
During these experiences that she said she became acutely aware of the challenges Brownsville families face whether as single parents or raising a family while living in poverty.
"Don't let anyone tell you it's easy raising a family here," she said. "People are going through extremely difficult times just to make ands meet and raising a family. The temptarion to stray is everywhere. People need someone who can relate to them at their level and help them deal with out legal system."
Toward that end, she has taken it upon herself to undergo training in anger management resolution and domestic violence. She is counting that her life experience, business background, education and social service, will give her a foot up on her opponents for the position.
"I don't come from a background where my parents have dominated politics, or made a living dealing with people's misery," she said. "I am a survivor who has struggled to raise my children to become productive citizens in their community and I want to continue contributing to my city. I truly believe that at our very basic foundation, one must have integrity to shape our future. This is not make believe for me. This is real life. I look forward to meet as many people as I can to share my ideas with them."

C’mon JM since when is Mrs. Begum considered one of “our peers”? I can understand you being her adulators since she is one of your major advertisers but considering her as one of “our peers”. Actions speak louder than words, instead of the Brownsville Art Museum, why won’t she hold her fundraiser at the Centro Cultural in Cameron Park or the Browne Road Social Center where she donated her skills to teach art?

Mrs. Begum may not have “made a living off other people’s misery”. She states “People need someone who can relate to them at their level and help them deal without legal system”. However, her lawyer son Alexander, who has enriched himself by suing other people has sure lavished on their misery. You see his ugly mug plastered on Billboards all over the highway not to mention the continuous TV advertisements. If she were to be elected I wonder how many cases that would go before her “grass root level” court will end up in her son's caseload?

The late Tony Torres might not have been a lawyer but the requirements set forth by the Cameron County Commissioner mandated the interim JP replacement be a licensed attorney.

Seriously, why is this lady even running? I'm sorry...but she doesn't sound qualified at all...I don't know any of the candidates running...but hell the bailiff, the bailbondsman and the lawyer sound a heck of alot more qualified than this Begum lady...the whole cancer survivor...raising kids thing are life experiences...but when people have legal issues...we need someone who knows what they are doing...I've asked a few pepole about this lady....they didn't have very nice things to say about her...

She needs to stick to painting...just sayin..

Vote for Yolanda Begum

We must remember that she is venturing into politics...and her haughty statements as a "survivor" don't really fit. She, as a politician, is trying to separate herself from the field of opponents. We have no idea if she will be any different than "non-survivor politians" or member of political familes. She is playing on local ignorance and doesn't say what she stands for......except that she wants to be elected.

In this day and age, the last thing we need is a J. P. with no legal education, training or background. The justice court often handles complicated legal issues in connection with eviction proceedings following wrongful foreclosures. A trained legal mind is essential for justice and fairness in keeping with statutory law and established common law precedent. She does not have a clue. As a attorney representing various banks, I can state that an incompetent JP can stifle mortgage lending. Let's get Cameron County out of the dark ages. Let's demand a higher level of JP's for out citizenry. Lets demand more than bail bondsmen, uneducated widows in need of a job, car salesmen and the like. It's time a formal legal education should be a prerequisit for this position.

Where supposed to believe she is just like us while having a fundraiser at a fine arts museum? You're a cheap date, Juanito.

Yolanda has my vote, my wife's vote, and my relatives votes.

My vote for Yolanda Begum. Its refreshing to have her life experience utilized in her community.People of Brownsville need new direction.Use your voice to vote out the old guard.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes lets elect another unqualified idiot to decide legal issues for the community. Who is going to interpret for her when she has to deal with some poor devil fighting eviction. Habla ingles?

Anonymous said...

Yolanda has my vote, as to everyone who says that someone has to have legal training; do you all not realize every JP goes to JP training seminars to learn about this complicated eviction proceedings. So she will get her legal training and Brownsville and Cameron county do need a new direction hopefully she won't be like the rest.

It's great to see the comments on this article...because it does seem to indicate that Brownsville is ready to come out of the dark ages and elect people who are qualified to fill positions. My family had to take some issues to a JP court here in Brownsville...and I will tell you if it wasn't for our lawyer we would have been screwed....bc the judge was/is an idiot...cannot beleive this judge is STILL on the bench! Our lawyer got the job done and was essentially telling the judge what to do...I personally am ready for LAWYERS ACROSS THE BOARD AT THE JP LEVEL. We are fortunate that we were able to find a good attorney that we could afford...but what about the majority of people who can't afford a lawyer?

Anonymous said...

We wanted change and new faces on the City Commission...what did we do, we voted off a big mouthed male and replaced him with a husband bashing female. Now that is real change.

Anonymous said...

If your voting for her without any legal background at all... Why not vote for "BOBBY LOCO!" same thing!

There were a lot of Cheezers at Yolanda's event. Right Juanito? Right Jim?

Please check out the Yolanda Begum video on youtube...I actually have less respect for this lady now that I have seen the video...no disrespect Mrs. Begum...but let's see... 1. No high school diploma 2. No formal education of any sorts 3. Certainly NO LEGAL training 4. can Barely speak English 5. Can barely get through a prepared speech.... and let me get this straight...you want to be the JP...the JP who handles $10,000 civil cases, evictions, truancy cases, and I believe other magistrate duties...Yeah...I do have a clear choice...NOT YOU...what a joke

Personally, I rather vote for Yolanda Begum than that "pig faced daughter" of Ernie "Double Dipper" Hernandez, our so-called county commissioner? Whether she has experience or not, Begum if elected will learn the system like others have in the past? Being a lawyer does not give you an edge, it only makes you more knowledgeable in the law? Is that an advantage or a disadvantage to being a good JP? In my book, I wouldn't want "piglet" in that position and "double dipper" directing how to run that office? But, that's me?

Anonymous said...

unfortunately, this lady is not qualified. Its just a power play by her son who wants more control of local politics. Thank you for wanting to serve Ms. Begum, but try something else. No disrespect, but we need someone with a handle of the law in this position. No more bennie ochoas

Yolanda Begum, blessed with money and integrity takes the lead in the race!!!! Begum's JP announcement was standing room only crowd and huge event last night. oh my but who could be bashing beautiful Yolanda Begum is it the Hernandezes!!!!!! Remind us about the vending machine contracts again, was it Ernie's company that got the County deal or was it his wife or JP candidate daughter's company?

Anonymous said...

Clearly the Hernandez feel threatened and are posting ridiculous things about begum. While I may not know allot about begum, I know more than enough about the Hernandez's. Let's see, Ernie wanted his brother in law to get a job with the county, he failed the test so he had someone take it for him. Then Ernie got his daughter in law a job with the sheriff. When she crashed after drinking to much, the sheriff fired her. Afterwards, ernie wanted her reinstated. But wait, there is more. Ernie won with politiceras. Then as city commissioner he had a contract with the city fir vending machines. Conflict? Now that there is a contract with his company and the county, Erin Hernandez owned the vending business? Even though all the applications for the contracts are under her moms name? Shady! This family is a leach. A leach on the county. They all want to profit from public office. Pitiful. I don't care who wins for JP. as long as it is not Erin and her dad.

"pig faced daughter" that is so true - lets see id brownsville Cheezers pick her we will have a winner here.

Begum..."Her Hinus"...starts getting attacked in the blogs and its automatically the Hernandez's...umm there are 3 other people running in that race...but clearly Begum feels threatened by Erin....as well she should...Erin is really the only person in this race even qualified for this position...it does crack me up though the way they get blamed for everything...ha ha ha

Anonymous said...

Wow Viro...has been busy on the blogs today...ha-ha-ha-ha...Everyone knows he is NOT supporting Erin....this from an uneducated, unemployed worthless piece of shit....And EVERYONE knows that he is the one attacking the cheezers....Viro...do us all a favor get a fucken life...and keep supporting Begum....by doing so you help all of the other opponents...LOSER!

The JP position was meant to be a full time position. Let's ask the candidates if they are going to be working full time? Is Erin the eels daughter going to leave her law practice? If not, it is surely a huge conflict. But I guess the Hernandez's are very very comfortable with conflicts of interest. Are the bail bondsmen going to stop being bail bondsmen? If they don't, it will also be a huge conflict of interest. They set bail, then they shift work over to themselves? I was at begum's function, she said this will be a full time job for her. If the county is paying for a JP, they should be forced to be full time.

Anonymous said...

If anything, I will vote for Begum because she seems like the less slimy of any other candidate. The Hernandez family needs to stop being leeches and stop living off of the county. As JP we can only imagine what other Hernandez's will be put on county payroll's. It is sad. I wonder who Erin will pass the vending contract with the county if she were to win? She supposedly owns it now that the eel is a county commissioner.

Anonymous said...

Erni you and Erin and Norma need to stop this nonsense. yOu guys still have the early voting scheme. I hope you do not get caught. How are things going for Daisey the DWI girl. And Roberto I can't pass a test ) brother in law of yours. How about the vending company who is the real owner? Will the real owner please stand up? YOu loosers will not get erin any vots by bad bouthing. YOu do not have enough money to buy every vote in the district so forget about it. Ernie you have been sucking off the county and city all of your life. YOu will do like many idiots who wind up in jail in their senior years. remember your crooked Uncle Emilio who hated your guts? Both of you are corrupt politicos and now you want to bring in your daughter? Shame on you .

Anonymous said...

Ernie I wonder if any one has ever stolen possessions from dead people? Remember the mechanic who used to work for you? He died and you replaced his name brand tools with cheap tools? Remember the police and his family had to come and make you give them back? Remember? How about when you were taking out social security from your employees at your service station and pocketing the money remember? But then you had to give it back remember? Remember when you were working your employees overtime and not paying them and the Wage and Hour commission make you pay them? Remember how you ased the employees not to cash the checks you had to give them but they did any way remember? I hope one of the Brownsville reporters does not read this and then check into this and does a full page story. That would be awful huh? How about when your tio emilio who gave you two days wrecker rotation when everyone else had only one remember? I do not think Mrs. Begum has come anywhere close to your acompishments or shall we say down to your shenanigans? All the writing in the world will not make you less of a corrupt individual than what people say you are. HOw did you win your election oh yeah in the early cheating , no voting, sorry.
Now go look for another job for roberto and erin and leave the brownsville citizenry alone. This is your very last time as a polititian. YOu will not cheat, oh sorry "early vote" your way into winning again.

Yolanda Begum is the clear choice for JP. wE MUST ELECT HER AND OTHER CANDIDATES WITH THE SAME HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS SHE BRINGS TO THIS RACE. GO YOLANDA GO...WE NEED THE HONOR YOU WILL BRING TO THE COURT.

Anonymous said...

It still cracks me up the way everyone try to bash Ernie. Get over it people he's the county commissioner!!! But what I don't get is why the hell everyone wants to bash ernie.....when ERIN is the running for JP....umm let's see...business degree...law degree...post degree certifications.....ummmmmm I'm sorry but she DOES sound more than qualified to be our justice of the peace....didn't you all read that article in the paper yesterday about our port isabel JP....that's exactly the reason why we need real attorneys to fill these positions....its 2011 people....lets try to raise the standards...not lower them...

Anonymous said...

Lets be honest who would not want Alex for a son in law? I know I would..beside he is not only good looking but a heck of a gentleman....You can say anything about him,but good looking he is!

and I speak from the bottom of my heart I was one of his first clients and I have highly recommended him many times.

What makes you think attorneys are not crooked? jaja

Who attended the announcement of Begum ?

If the 300 people 299 were politicians, judges, attorneys, the county employees, evlan dale or danny the pollster then forget this candidate ! !

if they were everyday people ?

we have a new beginning in cameron county ! !

Erin is running not Ernie said...

Yes, I am tired of people talking bashing Ernie Hernandez . I don't like what I read, but it is Erin Hernandez-Garcia running not her father. At least she has a judicial background. What about the other candidates?

Anonymous said...

a law degree does not make anybody either honest or kind Erin is none, she is her mother's daughter. I know her too well

Anonymous said...

Erin is a baby lawyer with no accomplishments as an attorney. A successful lawyer would not be pursuing a job like JP. It is actually kind of sad that her daddy is pushing her to this job. If her whole basis as a qualification is her law degree, she is so mistaken. Life experiences, tragedy, sadness, overcoming odds, owning and operating legitimate businesses that were not given to her by daddy the sucio politician, are more important for a PEOPLES court than having a law degree. The Texas legislature specifically said that JP need not have a law degree. Precisely because it is suppose to be a PEOPLES court where common sense can be applied instead of legal maneuvering by lawyers. This is a court for the common man, lets not screw it up by putting an Hernandez with a law degree in office. The fruit does not fall far from the tree, her daddy has shown us what ethical standards they live by.

Anonymous said...

So what about the other candidates?

Anonymous said...

Ummm .....stupid...the legislature is trying to change that....why...to many screw ups at the JP level...I'm sorry but we have to many idiots at the JP level right now....acting like real judges...you have stupid judges handling real cases....its not right....I don't know Erin as an attorney but I am prepared to have attorneys as JP...And right now she has my vote simply on an education standpoint...

Anonymous said...

...her own friends have questioned why she is even running....given her "past". You play with fire you get burned begums...ive known your family for a longggggggg time and i know the truth. Your money is not gonna get you through this one...

Anonymous said...

Try going to talk just talk to a JP today and you might have to wait because of the number of people just talking to the JP ! !

You will get to see the JP and you will get a direct answer and help and some satisfaction, I guaranty you if you see non lawyer JP Bennie Ochoa or non lawyer JP Salli in Harlingen.

But try going to see a JP who is an attorney and he will not talk with you unless you are another lawyer ! !

Lawyers think they are better than normal people and hate hate to talk
discuss or meet with the common people ! !

I dare you to just stop by the JP courtroom of non lawyer Cortez, Bennie or Sallie and you will be surprised no you will be in shock over how many many disputes, conflicts, fights between neighbors, family members are heard and settled by these non lawyer JP's resolve ! !

Attorney JP's will only create legal work for other attorneys and never never will see the common people ! !

Hush Hush non lawyer JP's are the only way for common people to have a voice ! !

Hush Hush ! ! Go Tarpons ! !

Anonymous said...

"I was one of his first clients and I have highly recommended him many times."

Yea and how much money did you get in the settlement. Who did he screw or sue to get you the money? How much money do you get every time you refer someone to his ambulance chasing practice? It's guys like Alexander and his ilk who are currently being indicted by the Feds and have screwed up the system. What goes around comes around. You kiss ass!

Anonymous said...

Wow! For all this talk about needing a qualified JP there sure is ALOT of bad grammar, not to mention bitterness, on these comments!

"umm....stupid...." it's not "to many screw ups" it's "too many screw ups". The consistent misspellings throughout these comments and unabashed support of the Hernandez's makes it evident that it's the same illiterate person writing all the nasty comments threatening the Begums. The reality is Mrs. Begum is refreshing. She's not a jaded politician only out to serve her own interests, rather she is interested in making a difference for the people of Brownsville. Let's allow her to do some good. It's about time Brownsville has someone in the political arena who is actually interested in helping the people, instead of herself...

El PipiriPow said...

While many of you might not be in agreement as to who runs, it would be great if instead of pointing out others shortcomings or perceived weak points, one would start to propose and PARTICIPATE with suggestions.

In full disclosure I do know the Begum Family, I have for practically my entire life. While some might not like them for "personal" reasons which is valid, you won't be able to question their dedication and hard work. That is what brought me to this website and read all the aforementioned comments.

Attorneys study and work hard, business owners work hard and create jobs. I'm sure all the candidates live productive lives, maybe not squeaky clean put productive non the less.

It would be nice to see elections where the citizens become active. Its sad when I see the turnout numbers here in the valley for local elections. In the meantime we all talk. "Chismosos" should start looking at the candidates and analyzing the true points, then turn out and vote, and then at the end complain and PROPOSE.

Be active citizens, keep your heads up.

Anonymous...the only person who Yolanda Begum is interested in helping is herself and HER ATTORNEY SON ALEX! Let me ask you this....they are prepared to drop a boat load of money in this campaign....$8o to $100,000.00. For what....a position that only pays in the 40's and is guaranteed for 2 years...it's an unexpired term...YOUR DAMN RIGHT THEY HAVE AN INTEREST.. And i'm sorry...but Yolanda can barely speak English and this is who Alex wants to buy the election for...Alex should have picked someone more qualified and who can speak English.

Anonymous said...

Her son, who is an attorney, wants to throw 80 to 100,000 thousand dollars for a job that pays 40?.....Hummm???? Let's see, and her son knows is only for two years....Hummmm??? I don't know what to make of this....

Anonymous said...

80k to 100k ?? Are these hard numbers or an estimate pulled out of the air by you guys?

I think you have your numbers WAY OFF. Its more like 20k to 40k I would think.

Besides, cold sorry truth is that for some people that is a lot of $, for many its what they make in a year, for others, its what they make in a month.

Its all relative, and its not about the salary of the position, you are looking at it like regular people with lower to middle class jobs. To people with high income jobs, 20-40k is just not a lot of $.

The truth may hurt some, but it is the truth.

Wow, 100,000 for a job that pays 40???
Let's be real, what are we looking at here? Can anyone answer please?
