Only four months after getting soundly trounced along with four other candidates by Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez, inside sources tell us that it's only a matter of time before Eduardo Camarillo make his announcement that he is a candidate to challenge incumbent Cameron County Precinct 1 Commissioner Sofia Benavides.
"We're 90 percent certain that Camarillo is going to announce against Sofia," said a source close to the group that is seeking to draft the portly former city commissioner. "A group of very influential people have gotten together and asked him to run against Sofia."
She was appointed to fulfill her late husband Pete Benavides' term in 2006 and then went on to win another four year term in 2009 with slogan to "carry on the (Pete's) legacy" .
She announced that she would run for re-election last week at a campaign rally at La Cantera.
It was no secret that there would be contenders for the Democratic nomination of commissioner for Pct. 1. Among those who have indicated an interest in running is Robert "Pato" Martinez, a para professional at Porter High School who has a tire shop that has made him and his family widely known in the Southmost area. He has ties to many influential families there including the Cisneros and Granados.

However, Martinez said he was in the process of naming his treasurer with the Cameron County Elections Office before he made the announcement to run.
The news that Camarillo would now be a candidate and the possibility that Camarillo and Martinez would split the vote was not lost on Martinez's supporters in the Southmost area, where the bulk of Pct. 1 voters live.
"If one runs the other won't," said a Southmost politico. "Why split the vote?"
It is unknown how deep Camarillo's support runs in Precinct 1. He garnered 2,338 votes city wide against Martinez's 5,308, but still outdistancing his nearest opponent Mike Garza by more than 1,329 votes (1,008).
"He made a respectable showing nonetheless," said his supporter. "We think there is some dissatisfaction out there against Sofia."
Last time around in the 2008 Democratic primary Benavides beat former Precinct 1 commissioner Lucino Rosenbaum by a respectable 1,338 votes with totals of 5,707 to 4,469.
Since then, she says that she's been reaching out to her constituents trying to bring the amenities that other county residents have in other precincts.
Already, her supporters are scouring the voter precinct results in teh past city election to see whether Camarillo made an impact in Precint 1.
"He only got 2,300 votes in the entire city," said a Benavides supporter. "Sofia got almost 6,000 in the precinct alone. We feel our chances are good."
"Until we brought Browne Park and community service center here, there hadn't been any county parks for this entire area," Benavides said. "I have tried to maintain contact with the residents of Pct. 1 throughout my term."

Camarillo had long been identified as an ally of embattled UTB-TSC president Juliet Garcia and the Cardenas while he was in the college. However, during the last election, he did not get their support and said he was running independent of the group.

Hummm...Very interesting!
Another bad idea Camarillo! Sofia didn't vote for the plastic bags ordiance you did, and every time we go shopping we rememeber all the city comissioners that voted for this spit on the ground! You win a couple of elections and you get the idea you can't lose.... you already did!
I think it is time to get rid of the Gilbert Hinojosa people. Sofia knows nothing. She needs to go.
Sofia is beggining to look like Aurora De La Garza, big fat and ugly.
Time to get her big fat ass out of office. Voter's be ware, another carrer politicians living of the Dole.
Edward Camarillo would be a step up from Sofia. Edward is an idealist who has no concept of reality, but he would be a positive move from Sofia.
We need plsastic bags,....to cover Sophie's ugly face with.
I would place Sofia’s intellect in the same level as that of BISD Trustee Minerva Peña and City Commissioner Jessica Tetreau. It’s time our community started promoting far more competent and non special interest candidates as our political leaders. It is no wonder that Brownsville is the laughing stock and subject of many jokes regarding our office holders. From having a previous mayor arrested for DWI to reading about a corrupt county commissioner attempting to use his influence in the hiring of a relative, followed by the influence peddling of a district judge and most recently a city commissioner who is notorious and has quite a reputation involving domestic scandals. It just seems every political entity, BISD, TSC, City of Brownsville, Cameron County and the Port of Brownsville is tainted with one or more elected official(s) who gives this region a bad name. What is even more unfortunate is the fact that this so called political leaders all belong to one specific party. It’s time we citizens became more involved and took seriously the matter of who we selected to run for a specific office. More importantly we need educate our community of the consequences involved when they continue to vote with the “palanca” mentality. We also need to chastise and vote against every politician or candidate for an elected office who chooses to use “politiqueras” as part of their campaign. Amen.
PLEEEEZZZZZZ NOT HIM AGAIN CAMARILLO GET A REAL JOB. LEARN TO SURVIVE THE THE PRIVATE SECTOR LIKE THE REST OF US!!!!!!!
OR ARE YOU SUCH A MAMON THAT IN ORDER TO SURIVE YOU NEED THAT GOVERNMENT "CHICHI".
GET THE FU@K OUT OUR FACES AND LIVES!!!!!!!!!
Edward Camarillo spent his first campaign telling us how he would lower PUB rates. His first vote as a commissioner was to raise PUB rates, in fact, he made the motion to do so.
The rest of his term as commissioner was downhill from there. He hit rock bottom with the plastic bag ban, which is just a tax on poor people enacted to curry favor with the goody two-shoes rich folks with whom he aspires to associate.
With a record like that, Edward would be better off to stay home, wherever that may be (mom and dad's?).
I wish people would learn how to spell correctly.
i agree. gilbert's machine needs to go...
Camarilo and his rodri and oxy man will fail again. Community, it is in the best interest to find someone that has proven business success for that position rather than GH appointment or some one that did not function as the college students thought he would. Wake up people. That county commissioner spot did nothing for the general public that uses the public beaches and the facilities located there. Dirty facilities with violence waiting outside the public facilities. Dirty beaches. No official county announcements on Bacteria levels in the Sea Water, not enough trash cans on Public beaches, no speed limit signs for the drinking public that drives along the shore in front of thousands of parents and children, no security, toll booth county employees parking personal car next to toll house, wanted felons enjoying beach with law abiding citizens, no checks and balances, silly comments at cc meetings with a tone resembling sadness which creates symphathy and votes for the stupidity that all fall for. A commissioner that never sits on the sand or in the last several years has never stepped into the public county restrooms that visitors from afar have to use along with county residents.
Nice Guy
