No one thought former U.S, Congressman Solomon Ortiz would be defeated after 28 years in office.
And no one though that his son Solomon Jr. would lose his Texas House of Representatives seat either.
And few though that Tara Rios would be defeated by J.M. Lozano, of Kingsville in 2010.
But they were.
And now, Brownsville attorney Alejandro Dominguez is hoping that Distract 37 voters have had enough of incumbent Rene Oliveira, who's held that office for 28 years since 1991.
Alejandro announced his candidacy to take on Oliveira promising bipartisanship if elected and a willingness to give voters more visible representation and to interact with the voters of the district.
Apparently, Alejandro thinks the voters have signalled that the time is ripe for new blood.
He was an assistant Cameron County district attorney and opened his law practice in 2005.
Dominguez comes from a family of 10, six of whom are teachers, and he thinks that experience in the classroom will allow him to formulate creative solutions to school funding and improve education for the district schoolchildren. He has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Rice University and a law degree from Arizona State University.
His campaign literature lists him as a member of the local bar association and as the president of the Los Diez Education Foundation, which has provided scholarships to graduating high school seniors in La Feria for 15 years, his alma mater.
“I am running because I believe that I can provide better representation for this district,” Dominguez told the local daily.
In facing Oliveria, Dominguez is aware that he is going against the latest of a powerful and influential family. Whether it's Ortiz, Lucio, or Oliveira, the names evince recognition for their lengthy permanence in public office.
However, some say that in recent years the state representative has lost touch with his constituents and is rarely seen at public events except when his reelection comes around.
Previous challengers have repeatedly pointed out Oliveira's role in the formation of the UTB-TSC partnership that left the community college district at the mercy of the powerful UT System and relied on the local tax base as a subsidy.
A majority of TSC trustees decided to separate the community college from the UT System and pushed through legislation to make the separation a reality. One trustee went as far as to attend the hearings in the House to make sure Oliveira carried out the boards' wishes. Oliveria and his cousin David, a TSC trustee, had argued against the separation.
More recently, others have questioned whether Oliveira still has the passion to serve the public after 28 years in Austin.
"Rene was groomed for the position," recalled a former fellow student at UT. "He knew that he was to graduate from law school, then to go home and with his family name get elected to public office. The plan was laid out for him and handed to him on a silver platter. Dominguez is one of 10 kids from a working-class family. There is a big difference."

I look forward to the day I can cast my vote for Alejandro Dominguez.
Thank God we hava a choice now......we are sick and tired of Oliveira, Rene and David....they are two fat cats....who only help themselves to the buffet...go for it Dominguez and when you win do not forget were you came from...now we need somone to take out the lazy state senator lucio
Sorry but the position belongs to the Oliveria family and the next in line is Rene son ! !
You see here in Cameron County this is the way it is done ! !
The voters of Cameron County have no say in the matter ! !
Rene is DONE. His arrogance and his shady character has gotten the best of him. Most people in Brownsville are amazed he hasn't been busted for doing hard drugs. We need new blood that want to help citizens instead of helping themselves.
Yes it is time for Oliveira to go. The residents of District 37 deserve better than a fat, bug eyed old fart who wastes his time chasing women instead fulfilling his duties. All the lobbyist and other State Reps. in Austin know that during session he very rarely shows up for work at the Capitol until after lunch because he was out all night spending his campaign contributions getting drunk and chasing women. The only reason it seems like he is there is because he has his desk mate punch in for him which counts him as present when role call is taken on the House floor.
I am for Dominguez all the way enough is enough.
Time to send the hooker crazy Rene home! Buy prostitutes on your own time Rene,....you monster looking son of a bitch!
Some one needs to tell Solomon Ortiz and his son.
I have known both Rene and Alex for years. Rene is a scumbag and Alex is a true gentleman. I will vote for Alex and we can only hope that he can compete with the out-of-valley and out of state money Rene gets for helping his contributers and ignoring his constituents. Alxe is the man!!!!
. We need a Manny Vela or Trey Martinez type to replace Rene. Lex is just not going to make it happen.

Please! Manny Vela or Trey Martinez?
i would rather have Rene stay there than have any of these two idiots. I'll give my vote to the bald guy,....he hasn't been corrupted like the guys mentioned above.
With the exception of Eddie Lucio, Jr., many have tried and many have failed to beat Rene every time his re-election comes up. It's about time he's sent home packing and let someone else who is not dedicated to the special interest lobbyists instead of his constituency, represent our district.
Is there a lawyer in the Valley not tied to ex Judge Abel Limas??? Didn't Tony Martinez and his son throw a big fundraiser for LIMAS??? Is the axe just waiting to fall on every name mentioned so far??
fucking corrupt
his money willnot mean much. what is he going to do put up more picutres of himself? the out of town money will serve him to live off of when he is defeated. Maybe he can bring in Slick Willie like Solomon did? It is time to get rid of him and The two Eddies. Eddie Jr is the worse of all. He is finshed in the valley after he corrupted the system. Rene it would be better for you to simiply quit than be humiliated by having your stuf out in the street for all to see.
Rene Rene Rene. You have rolled the dice too many times ! !
Your luck with the booze, ladies, ladies, ladies and other partying is about to run out ! !
You have done a lot for the people and you have a lot to show for it.
You gotta know when to fold and you also have admitted it time and time.
Let us, your friends, neighbors and voters celebrate the 28 years you and your family have given.
Appoint a committee from the district to help you name names and
pass the torch to either this rookie or some fresh young lawyer and hea, yea Mr. Macho even consider passing it to a deserving woman rookie.
You know the pinche democrats statewide will remain dead weight for another 6 years so your replacement will have some time to learn the ropes from you ! !
We are all with heavy heart
VATO ! !
Torn between needing new blood and seeing you leave ! !
Enjoy the years you got left here and in Austin ! !
You have earned the respect statewide and in your district! Be happy and go on to the final phase of your life ! !
Mil gracias ! !
Tu jente te ama Rene. Te aman y te respeptan ! !
Hush Hush ! !
Browntown siempre.
WHAT A JOKE THIS STATEMENT IS:
Rene is without a doubt one of the most influential legislators in Austin. He talks, and the legislators all stop to listen.
You don't know what you are talking about and obviously have not spent any time in Austin. He is not one of the most influential legislators. However, he is one of the biggest pushovers, drunkards, and womanizers in Austin. His colleagues there don't listen nor do they respect him. They just pretend to. They think he is a big joke because he rarely shows up to work until after the noon hour. He gets others to clock in for him and cast his votes. The old, fat, ugly, bug eyed, drunkard spends most of his time drinking and carousing. In fact the word among the members around the Capitol is protect your female staffers from him because he is always chasing after them like a bitch in heat.
He needs to be replaced.
28 years is enough he is got to go time for some new blood.
Oliveira has taken the residents of District 37 for granted. Time for a change.
He represents the lobby not the residents of District 37. It is time for him to go.
I have to give Oliveira credit he sure does know how to pick a fine looking secretary at his State Rep. office.
That lady is really nice and smart but mostly she is super H-O-T!!!!
ANYBODY BUT OLIVEIRA PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ONLY time you Oliveira is at ELECTION TIME!
He needs to retire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is it that Oliveira sends his staff to meetings that he should be attending?
Like the previous posting says... he has taken his district for granted.
Maybe Trey Mendez should run.
