She was appointed to fulfill her late husband Pete Benavides' term in 2006 and then went on to win another four year term in 2009 with slogan to "carry on the (Pete's) legacy" .
Now Sofia Benavides wants the voters of Precinct 1 to vote for her for another four years that would make it 11 years of service if she wins.
On Thursday night, before a crowd of
supporters, elected officials. politiqueros and other dignitaries, she announced that she wanted their support to serve another term as Cameron County commissioner.
An enthusiastic crowd of well-wishers chanted their support egged on by MC Evelon Dale, who is managing her campaign. Supporters like Emilio Chavira, a retired county eemployee, and current Pct. 1 secretary Patty Matamoros flanked Sofia as she worked the crowd. Outside, administrative assistant Gabino Vasquez greeted guests and distributed bumper stickers and campaign literature. Vasquez had been her late husband's supervisor at the Road and Bridge barn until the four precincts were consolidated into Public Works and placed under County Supervisor Pete Sepulveda.
Those among the audience included the likes of Justice of the Peace Linda Salazar, Constable Pete Avila, Pct. 1 Commissioner Ernie Hernandez and his daughter Erin Garcia, also running for the justice of the peace position which will become vacant after Kip Van Hodge completes the term next year.
State Rep. Rene Oliveira also attended the even as did Yolanda Begum, who will face off Erin and two other candidates for the justice of the peace position.
It is no secret that there will be a contender for the Democratic nomination of commissioner for Pct. 1. Among those who have indicated an interest in running is Pato Martinez, a para professional at Porter High School who has a tire shop that has made him and his family widely known in the Southmost area. He has ties to many influential families there including the Cisneros and Granados.
But last night – after a gruelling county session where balancing the budget and reassigning bailiffs to the sheriff's department was debated – Benavides was basking in the support of her strongest supporters and looking forward to an equally gruelling election campaign.
Her ties to public service in the city and county go from her late husband who was both a city and county commissioner, her mother who served with the county, and her sisters. Combined they have dedicated a total of 76 years of public service to the county.
Sofia and her avid supporters are hoping that the next four will make it 80.

I will vote against this woman.
God forbid, she win again, another free loader, the county is full of those.
76 combined years of service in the county. I don't know if i would emphasize that. at some point, it begins to sound like a bunch of people who can't make it off of the public tit. i am not saying that it is the case, but it could be interperted like that by a potential opponent.
Remove this cancer.
sofia should get out of her late husband shadows. she should not be running again out with the old and in with the new.. what has she done for the county nothing.. the same with linda salazar how sad her son ruben cortez the ex president for the bisd board.. i would if this time if he is going to help her with her campaingn.. the poltiqueras system will do the dirty work.. mail in ballets i would like to see them blockwalking going out to the public and helping others. no what they do is las vegas... always out of town. wow must have a lot of money to travel to vegas, at least 5 times a year. and she takes her staff. my question is who runns the office when mrs salazar is out gambling drinking parting. didnt she have open heart surgury.. makes you wounder what kind of people we have in out payroll. why cuz we pay taxes and that is where they go to.
