"We haven't raised taxes in the eight years," he told the audience at City Hall and the thousands of others who watched on the city cable channel.
Well, unfortunately, the numbers don't bear out the claims. A cursory review of the last eight years indicates that the commissioner, except for one year (2007) actually did vote to increase the tax rate. Click on graphic for better view.
Now, it might not have been called a rate increase when the tax rate remains the same but the amount of money taken in by the city was more than the previous year, but semantics aside, it really is an increase in taxes, isn't it?
We came
upon this interesting document floating around the third floor of city hall and it pretty much sums up the fact that for seven of the last eight years, the comish from the Southmost area (and the rest of the crew) have raised taxes.This is not our invention, but rather a document generated by the city itself that Ricardo governs. Are we to understand that the commissioner doesn't understand the way the taxing formula works? We figure that if after eight years he can still claim (erroneously) that there has been no tax increase, then there has been an extended learning curve happening here.
Are we missing something that only city insiders know, Rick?
